When I entered the guild, a man, who seemed to be a bit drunk, called out to me.
“Hey, cute little miss, this is the wrong place to pick up items or post a commission, you see~.”
“Oh no, I’m here to become an adventurer…”
“Oh ho! You are, little lady? Gah-ha-ha-ha! Do your best, then!”
He wasn’t a bad person, just because he was drunk. Though if he had been a bad person, I’d have fought back.
I went straight towards the reception. A man with bulging muscles was manning the counter. Judging from his appearance, he seemed to be rather strong.
Why isn’t it a pretty girl? That’s what you’d normally expect.
“Hey there! Aren’t you a cute little lady! What brings you to the guild?” the man at the reception asked me.
He’s awfully energetic, isn’t he?
“Oh… erm, I want to become an adventurer…”
“Oh, really? A young girl like you?”
“Yes.”
“Well, anyone can join the guild. As for your criminal record… you probably don’t have one, right? How old are you?”
“I’m 12 years old!”
“Uhm, 12 years…?
Huh, what’s wrong?
“Is me being 12 years old some kind of problem?”
“Hm~, well, it is. As a matter of fact, the suitable age for becoming an adventurer is 15 years and higher, but there’s also X-Rank for people younger than that, which is a special rank, but… are you sure about that?”
Wha-, is he serious? I guess this rank exists. At any rate, you can probably do nothing but chores at X-Rank.
“X-Rank…? I’m sorry, I don’t know a lot about the guild… Still, since that’s the only work I can do… Could you give me a detailed explanation?”
I made my eyes tear up, cocked my head a little, and put my hand over my mouth. The so-called innocent-little-girl-pose.
I wonder, will it be effective?
“O-Oh!? Ah, s-since you’re such an adorable girl, I think you’ll be able to do a variety of jobs… Like as an employee in a café, you know. Well, alright, if you don’t know about the guild, I’ll give you an explanation. You good if it takes a while?”
“Yes! That’s fine! Please tell me.”
It has been effective. Explain it to me quickly.
“The so-called guild is present everywhere in Anazumu. It’s an organization to handle adventurers. We accept requests, and the adventurers can choose the ones they want to do from among them… oh, they’re on the notice board over there. Well, at any rate, the requests are completed by adventurers. They then receive the fee from the client who posted the request.
“The guild takes 10% of the fee, so the client pays an additional 10% to the guild. Oh, by the way, adventurers can also post requests, right? But the counter for posting those is in the neighboring building, you see. Ah, requests are sometimes also called ‘quests’. There’s nothing different about those. Is everything until this point clear?”
“Yes.”
“Great, next then. Requests are largely separated into three different kinds: subjugation, collection, and everything else. Subjugations are requests to defeat a specified magic beast in a designated location. You complete subjugation requests by handing in a part of the magic beast. Incidentally, the defeated magic beast belongs to the adventurer.
“Collections are requests to gather a specified item or part of a magic beast. Well, we mainly get these, rather than subjugations. Last is everything else. Like guarding merchants for a set amount of time, cleaning jobs for bottom-rank adventurers, and so on.”
Oh, you get to keep the magic beasts from subjugations. That’s a good thing. They are profitable.
“As for parties. So-called parties are groups of two or more adventurers. Well, some requests are on the easier side, while others can only be accepted as a party, you see. Any number of people are fine for a party. On that note, there are parties with more than 100 people and parties who cooperate financially, but those are called ‘teams’. Teams have lots of privileges. Are you still with me?”
“I’m fine.”
“I see. Then, an explanation about the ranks. Ranks go from F to SSS. Parties also have a party rank, ranging from E to SSS. You can raise your rank by accepting lots of quests, bringing in high rank magic cores, winning in the coliseum, or quite a few other methods.
“As for requests, you cannot accept any higher ranked than your own rank. Though as a party, you can accept requests up to your party rank. Although C-Rank is generally sufficient. There are other benefits to your rank: Dungeons managed by the country have rank restrictions, and some weapon shops offer discounts.
“X-Rank is a temporary rank for kids under the suitable age of 15 years, who become adventurers. They can become F-Rank, should they clear the promotion exam. Well, to be honest about that test, it’s more common that someone gets directly to D-Rank, and there’s barely any kids who get from X- to F-Rank each year. Even the few that do… only manage after several attempts. X-Ranks really can only do simple stuff like cleaning a mansion. Well, they’re kids, so it can’t be helped, right? Oh, and you can’t just be crafty1 and raise your rank with magic cores at X-Rank. Did you get everything about the ranks?”
“What about magic cores that I have collected in the past?”
“Hm? If the magic core was obtained by the person who submits it, it’ll be fine, even if it’s older than 100 years. Though I don’t know what the principle behind that is. Next will be the final part.”
“Please tell me.”
“About this place. The bar here is managed by the guild. The guild also operates other bars in the royal capital2. Oh, also, if you can’t find a place to stay the night, tell me, will you? The guild has simple lodging facilities. It’s 50 bells per night. We also purchase magic cores. Oh, on that note, for selling parts of magic beasts other than the magic cores, go to a specialized store or one of the merchant associations.
“Now, guild cards. They are given to all adventurers and also serve as a form of identification. Make sure not to lose yours, alright? Though we can reissue them. If your rank changes, the rank on your card will also change, and should you want to show your skills to a client, you can have them touch your guild card, which will show them only the skills you want them to see. That’s it for my explanation.”
That was a great explanation. Thank you.
“Thank you very much!”
“Then, should we quickly register you as an adventurer?”
“Yes, please!”
“What’s your name, little miss?”
“My name is Alim.”
“Alim… alright. Oh, what about your second name?
“Huh?”
Do I need a family name? But nothing of that sort is written on my status screen. I better choose something appropriate, right? My last name on Earth was read as “Joujou”. If I use the Japanese reading3 of the characters, it would be “Nariue”…
Nariue… Nariwei. That’s it. I’ll go with Nariwei.
“My full name is Alim Nariwei.”
“Nariwei… alright. Done, here’s your guild card.”
He gave me a grey guild card.
“Thank you very much!!”
I’ve finally become an adventurer. Oh, I got registered with my gender as “female”… Well, whatever.
Yep. The people around me sure spoil me, don’t they?
TL notes:
This was the first time I had to break up paragraphs for better readability, since the receptionist produces such huge walls of text. Usually it’s the opposite, with me combining several sentences into decently sized paragraphs.
Footnotes:
- Not sure about this part. The original is セコができない. セコ might be せこい (“petty”, “mean”, “crafty”, “sly”), but it could also be something completely different.
- This could also mean that there are other guilds, that manage bars in the royal capital. Those bars might also be cafés.
- Alim’s last name written in kanji is 成上. Kanji usually have two readings, the on-reading, based on the Chinese reading at the time when they incorporated the Chinese letters into the Japanese language, and the kun-reading, which is mainly used for verbs or adjectives/adverbs. He’s using the kun-reading here.
