“So, could you show us this diary of your ancestor right away?”
“Yes, it is currently in the palace archives. Let’s go.”
Mika and I followed his lead. It looked like our gentlemanly fan, who’d shown us the way earlier, and the other servants would also join us.
In the end, the man was a king, so there were likely always several attendants with him when he walked through the palace. Still, King Mephilad wasn’t like that… he had at most two to three people with him.
“Hrm, why are you all following Us? You are aware that Alim and Mika are guests and that We are planning to show them something! Go back to your work!”
At the king’s words, most of the servants reluctantly left, with the only ones remaining being the old gentleman, the king’s personal bodyguard Hanuman, whom we’d met before, and a scholar who was likely charged with studying the diary.
“Our apologies for this disgraceful display.”
“N-Not at all, Your Majesty.”
“Well, that’s how it is, you are awfully famous in Our country, Alim… We’ve arrived.”
The king came to a stop in front of a door. This was likely either the archive or the library.
In the case of the Mephilad Kingdom, the library wasn’t in the castle itself but a nearby building. In exchange, the castle itself only had an archive with a small selection of books. Karua had once complained to us that it was “such a bother to leave the castle whenever one wants to read a book.” Well, it only took a few minutes to get there from the castle.
“Hrm, where did We put it again… Ah, there!”
Where he was pointing, a thick, important-looking book was lying on a desk. This was probably the diary.
“As We mentioned via message, it is awfully weathered. The most crucial parts – what happened after the nomination of the guide – are illegible… It was Our blunder that it was left here for so long without anyone noticing its importance.”
So, they found some literature that might have a big historical significance, only for it to be weathered and falling apart. An all too familiar story.
On Earth, there was advanced restoration technology, with research institutes specialized on it, like the one investigating Kanata’s brain and Sakura’s eyes… Using methods I didn’t exactly know much about, they managed to completely restore ancient documents, often causing major changes to the historical record. Such changes obviously also included things like schoolbooks. That was the reason the ones from my parents’ generation were quite different from ours1.
Doing something like that would now be my job.
Heh-heh, this is kinda fun.
“Do you want me to only restore this book?”
“Let Us think… Now that you bring it up, since you are here already, could We ask you to fix some other books, too? You there, I assume there are numerous historically important tomes that suffered wear and tear! Inform the librarians right away and have them bring those here! Hanuman, go and get some soldiers to help. These tomes are heavy.”
“As you wish, My King.”
The way he was able to quickly hand down orders gave him a cool and aloof air. Although I knew that he was like an idol-obsessed otaku at his core.
“Well, Our apologies for that. Your compensation will be per book in that case.”
“I-It’s no problem. I didn’t come here expecting to be paid to begin with.”
King Rama gave me a blank look when he heard my reply.
“What do you mean?”
“To be blunt, doing this helps me kill time.”
“We see. Even so, We must compensate you for this.”
Surprisingly enough, he wouldn’t back down. Well, if he was so insistent on paying me, then I wouldn’t refuse.
“Understood. Let’s restore the diary first, then.”
“Please do.”
I put on gloves before picking up the book. It certainly was in a poor state. Still, all it took was to sprinkle some “Amrita for Items” on it and…
“Here you go, it should be back in the state it was when something was last written in it.”
“That was all?”
“Yes.”
Even I had to say that this restoration substance was awfully convenient. Though I didn’t use it often.
“In that case… hrm.”
The king picked up the diary and intently looked at its front and back cover. Then, he rifled through the pages. He nodded in apparent satisfaction.
“It has been fully restored. Marvelous.”
I gave a giggle while looking smug.
Not good, now he’s staring at me. I mustn’t act this flirtatiously in front of fans. It’s hard to keep calm when people stare like this.
“I brought some books to start with.”
The scholar who’d come with us earlier was back, carrying several dilapidated tomes. Just from looking at them, I could tell that they were several hundreds of years old.
“I see, you brought those first. They are historically valuable accounts We might gain ample information from, were they to be restored. But We were lacking the means for that, so We merely kept them in storage for the time being. Can you fix them, Alim?”
“Piece of cake.”
I poured the same restoration fluid from earlier over the three books. In front of our eyes, they rapidly reverted to the state they had been when they were new.
“Oh… how wonderful!”
“My King! Lady Alim! We brought more books!”
“Hrm, those are also historical records! Ha-ha-ha, We might end up advancing our historical studies at once in a fell swoop!”
It looked like the librarians were back, carrying tons of books.
Alright, let’s fix all of those!
Footnotes:
- I feel like that’s a bad example since a) most changes to schoolbooks happen due to advancements in education, and b) Japan is notorious for “forgetting” much of the country’s less glorious recent history.
