“…Alim, what are you doing? Or rather, what is that?” Ruin seemed perplexed when he saw the spiral staircase.
Mika had brought everyone back with her.
“Ah… well, it seems to be a hidden room, you see. It looks like the treasure chest works like a switch. There were hidden rooms in suspicious places in other dungeons, so I searched for one of those here and found this.”
“There are hidden rooms in dungeons… for some reason, this makes me giddy!”
Judging grom her expression, Lilo was definitely excited.
“Hidden rooms… what kind of places are they?” Ruin asked.
“Each dungeon has some kind of theme, and when you clear them, you get a reward based on your performance.”
“Is there a risk?”
“Well~, in the past, I encountered a deteriorated S-Rank specimen in one that had you fight a monster, so they might be dangerous, but… most of them test your magic or your stats.”
Although I said that, I had only seen the knife throwing and magic beast subjugation varieties.
“Hrm… what should we do?”
“What’s there to hesitate? Let’s do it!”
“I agree”
“I… I also agree!”
Following Lilo’s excited declaration, Karua and Myuri also voiced their willingness to try it.
“Alright… then, let’s see how far we get,” Ruin agreed.
Thus, we ascended the spiral staircase. We immediately reached a room. And at the same time, a message appeared in our minds.
[Defeat the four Automata Knights. The faster you defeat all of them, the better the contents of the treasure chest1 will be. Well then, mission start!]
Together with that message, the walls of the room opened in four places and elaborate robots, roughly two meters tall, carrying swords, and looking as if they’d stepped out of a Science Fiction movie, appeared.
“Alright… oof!”
I stopped Orgo, who had drawn his sword and was about to charge at them.
“Please wait. There is a possibility that each of those is A-Rank or higher… This time, I will fight.”
“You’re right, understood.”
Mr. Ruin, the nice person he is, also agrees, so let’s bring down those robots.
For now, I swept them away with a Matchless Thunder. Seeing it was my spell, the mechanical puppets were obviously blown away and went to pieces. Although they had seen my magic on several occasions, Ruin and the others seemed astonished. Each of the Automata Knights… dropped an A-Rank magic core.
See, they were abnormal, after all. If you ask me, that’s way too tough compared to knife throwing or demonstrating the power of your magic.
“Huh… it would seem all of them were A-Rank,” Myuri mused.
“Hah… In that case, they are impossible for us as we are right now.”
Right now. Ruin seemed bashful, as he emphasized those words.
Well, he does have a point.
[Mission cleared. A treasure chest of «achievement level – legendary» will appear.]
Before we knew it, the result message floated up in our minds. We had only talked for a few seconds, but that seemed too slow already for divine level. A spot in the center between the alcoves the four puppets had emerged from slid upwards and a treasure chest appeared from within.
“What might be inside?” Lilo wondered.
“Shall I have a look?” Karua asked.
We opened the treasure chest. This time, I had cleared the challenge, so I wouldn’t give the reward to the group, but I still did rely on Karua for the time being. While the contents of the chest should always be same at legendary level, Karua’s luck might have an influence on the contents of the box within2.
As expected, there was a key box inside. As usual.
“What… is this?” Ruin asked.
“Well, it’s a sort of special item, and-”
I told everyone how this box would act as a key to let you fight the true boss of the dungeon, and that you could access its contents only if you took it outside, which might consist of SS-Rank magic cores, legend grade items, or skills cards of the S-Rank or 4-star variety.
“Huh… should we leave for now and check it out, then?” Ruin proposed.
“Let’s do that,” I agreed.
We immediately left the dungeon. Right away, we opened the key box. It looked like there was a skill card inside.
“Let me check it for a moment, I’ll tell you what it does.”
I held the card to my head. As for what skill it contained-
“Bwuh!?”
“Wh-What’s wrong!?”
“Ah… nothing, I was just a bit shocked…”
Dear me, I ended up shouting unintentionally.
The skill it contained was called “Detonating Touch”. If you touched something while consciously using the skill, it would apparently explode3. It was an S-Rank skill that let you regulate its strength, and its upper limit depended on your spellpower. I explained that to everyone.
“That… that does sound like an ominous skill…” Myuri muttered.
“But it’s strong… it definitely is a great thing to get from those,” I replied.
TL notes:
There was a weird author’s comment referencing what I think is “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” (the original is ハ○ーポ○ターと…秘密の…). No clue how this relates to this chapter, but it’s there.
Footnotes:
- The original is “…the better the reward will be”. I used “contents of the treasure chest” to keep it consistent with previous messages of that kind.
- The original is very unclear. It pretty much says, “The contents are the same, but Karua’s luck might influence the contents of the contents.”
- Unless the explosion is delayed or the caster is immune to the damage, this sounds rather inconvenient.
