“Woof… woof…”

Rir was troubled by her clothing choices. She didn’t seem to know what to wear when going to the castle. The other day, she and I bought several sets of clothing that seemed nice, and she was now struggling to pick one among those.

“Shuu! I’ve narrowed it down to those two, but… which one should I wear?” she asked me as she walked up to me.

To be honest, both of ’em fit her, so I ain’t got no clue.

“I think both are fine, Rir.”
“Woof, I… I can’t decide. I just can’t, you do it for me, Shuu.”
“Alright…”

Incidentally, we had bought these clothes at a store Kanata recommended to me. According to what he told me, Sakura ended up confessing to him thanks to buying clothes for her there. It was that kind of store.

Maybe because all the employees were elves, Rir hadn’t been refused entry1. It didn’t seem like a bad store. I also haphazardly picked a few sets of clothing for myself there.

For the time being, I chose the set Rir was holding in her right hand, consisting of a soft and fluffy outfit with a white skirt made for beastfolk.

“This one…? Alright, this one it is!”

She went to the dressing room and changed into that set. Each and every one of those clothes had been chosen by an older woman who talked in a weird affective tone of voice, and they fit Rir scary well.
Yep… well, they were also super expensive.

If Kanata hadn’t told me in advance that it was an ultra-high-end store, I probably wouldn’t have brought enough money. Also, after buying her a dozen or so sets of clothing at that store, Rir spent the rest of the day looking awfully apologetic.

“How does it look?”
“Awesome, right?”

To be honest, she looked so cute, it felt like she was wasted on me.

“Woof, gotcha. I’ll go with these, then.”

With her tail wagging happily, Rir sucked the scattered clothing into her magic bag, as if she was using a vacuum cleaner. I had already finished getting dressed and was ready to leave.

“Woof… It’s already time to go.”
“True enough. You all set?”
“Of course.”
“Great, off we go!!”

Rir and I walked through the city. For now, I took her hand.

“You want to hold hands?” she looked at me in surprise.
“…It’s ’cause we heard the king is a bigot. I’m guessin’ you’re nervous.”
“Yeah, to be honest…”
“Well, it is how it is. Just don’t worry ’bout what they say, y’know? Still, erm, I’m absolutely on your side, alright?”
“Awoo~!!”

Even though we were in public, Rir hugged me, or rather, she clung to my arm. It couldn’t be helped, so we walked to the castle like that. Finally, we arrived at its gates.

“At last.”
“Yep, let’s go in.”

We showed the guards at the gate our guild cards. They opened the gate for us, where a servant looking like some elderly gentleman was waiting for us. He would apparently guide us through the castle.

We followed him, crossed the garden, and then entered the castle proper. It was insane, the interior design was seriously amazing. Both Rir and I were left openmouthed, as we gazed at the way too splendid sights.

There was an enormous chandelier, the floor was a soft, red carpet, made from the hide of some magic beast, there were pillars decorated with what was likely the glittering inner part of clam-type monsters (it was apparently called “mother-of-pearl”), and other ornaments looked like they were made of orichalcum…!!

Everything looked amazing.

Rir got so nervous, she gripped my arm strongly enough for her nails to dig in. Moreover, she seemed to be trembling slightly. Like that, we advanced in a straight line, climbed a large staircase, and then found ourselves in front of a double door.

“This is the throne room. Our king, His Majesty Loukis Zeggray is waiting. I would like to ask you not to act impolitely.”

The elderly gentleman pushed open the double doors. The throne room was rather wide and felt like a short road.

Straight ahead of us, I could see one of these good-looking guys you’d see in isekai stories, sitting on a gaudy throne. That man was likely King Loukis.
…So, he’s the main culprit of draggin’ us to this world without ever askin’ first.

On both sides of the room were people who looked like officials, and both male and female soldiers – burly men wearing swords and cloaks2 with a cheetah pattern, and female knights holding spears, their bodies enveloped in splendid armor.

Also, closest to the king were a beautiful woman holding a staff, who was wearing what looked like a white angel’s raiment… and Kanata and Sakura. The kids looked my way.

“You may approach me, o adventurers with dauntless courage!” spoke the king.

Seeing him like that, even though I’d heard he was a garbage king… he did have dignity. Though he seemed young for a ruler.

I shot a glimpse at Rir’s expression. Judging from her face, she was nervous to the point where she couldn’t form any thoughts. I advanced on the red floor, pulling her along with me.

Darn… I’m gettin’ super nervous, too…!

In reality, we probably got there in no time at all, but it felt like we were walking for several hours until we finally reached the king. For now, I knelt like the guild master had taught us to. At the same time, I controlled Rir with Psychic Magic, since she was too nervous to move by herself.

“Hrm. You did well to come here, erm… Shuu Hino and that slave… huh, she isn’t a slave? No matter… your wolfkin companion of the Red Ears… So, you are another sage.”

Guess Kanata and Sakura told him that I’m a sage, too. That’s good, just as planned, though the way he treats Rir is pretty sketchy… Nah, he’s probably treatin’ her better than he normally would…

Footnotes:

  1. I doubt it. Elves are pretty, so they use them as personnel everywhere. Using them as a benchmark for what stores serve demi humans seems unreliable.
  2. It says “armor” in the original. I used cloaks since they were described like that in chapter 204 and for the sake of consistency.
