“…Dace, there’s one thing I’d like to know.”
“Oh-oh… what might that be, my boy?”
Dace gave that reply to Loukis’ question while holding Gungnir. The two people and the being in the spear were currently in the middle of a discussion.
“Why has there been no big news out of the Mephilad Kingdom for more than one month? The latest I heard was that the princess of that kingdom was abducted, and that she was then rescued by some girl adventurer called Alim, who’s currently immensely popular there… that’s about it.”
“You’re right…”
The reason they… no, the whole of Yggdrasil had received no news about the Mephilad Kingdom at all, was because said news was suppressed by Mephilad.
They made sure that none of the countries that didn’t support them, especially Yggdrasil, with which they had an especially bad relationship, learned anything about their war with the demons1.
“You didn’t see anything with your predictions?”
“Oh-ho… I’m afraid not… I didn’t receive any prophecies concerning that kingdom.”
“…Tch, useless. No matter. So, are there any other predictions I should know about?”
“There is one; it concerns the two new SS-Rank adventurers who will come here three days from now…”
Loukis put the wine glass, from which he had been drinking, back on the platter.
“Right, I heard some things about those people. Apparently, they’re a human man and some wolfkin slave who went missing when that Mountain Eater appeared, but they managed to build up their strength and make it back home.”
“Indeed, it’s about the man; the foretelling told me that he will be deeply connected to our plans.”
“Huh, in what way?”
Loukis wasn’t happy about the whole affair. It vexed him, having to bestow the prestige of SS-Rank to a wolfkin slave girl. However, Surtr had demanded strong people, so the king thought verifying the adventurer’s strength and having them fight the Black God, might put the latter in a better mood, so he put up with it.
“Well, it doesn’t seem to be that deeply… Still, I am sure he’ll be of use to us in some shape or form.”
“That’s rather vague… well, it’s better than him getting in the way of our plans.”
“Also, my boy, I’d like to ask you to keep that skill ready.”
“…What for?”
While Loukis only had power about equal to an A-Rank adventurer, he owned a skill able to instantly kill someone, regardless of said opponent’s strength, by fulfilling certain conditions.
When the king was still an infant, his father bought that skill from an adventurer who’d conquered a dungeon, and made him learn it.
“My foretelling told me that there will be a time to use it.”
“…Well, I can guess that much, too. I’ll get it ready. It makes my stomach churn to take your orders, but… it’s for the sake of destroying the Mephilad Kingdom. Guess I have no other choice.”
“My deepest apologies.”
When Dace prostrated herself before him, Loukis suddenly stood up and made his mantle flutter.
“I’ll be going to sleep.”
“Have a pleasant rest.”
“…Put away Gungnir, will you?”
Leaving behind Dace and Surtr, Loukis went to his sleeping chambers. The seeress also left the throne room and turned to a room that was solely used as a place of enshrinement for Gungnir.
“Hey…” Surtr, who was sealed in the spear, called out to her.
“What is it?”
“…One month ago… I‘m pretty sure the seal on that floozy Samaeyl was broken. The Mephilad Kingdom is hiding that, right?”
“Indeed, she was resurrected.”
“Still, I cannot feel her magic power… Could she have failed?”
Dace stopped in her tracks at those words.
“…Yes.”
“…How did it happen? She was done in by the hero, wasn’t she!? Not some everyday hero, the true hero…!! Perhaps she-“
“No, Lady Samaeyl’s defeat wasn’t at the hands of the hero.”
Surtr was lost for words for some time. Finally, he spoke again.
“Normal weapons… are ineffective on us. Magic below a certain power is also nullified. So, someone who isn’t even the hero brought down Samaeyl…?”
“Yes, and as a result, the Mephilad lineage could not be eradicated.”
“…I see.”
Dace got the impression, that Surtr was grinning.
“In other words… they are seriously strong, right? Someone who manages that can’t be normal…”
“…Are you looking forward to it?”
“This~ is~ the~ best~~! Ah, ah-ha, gah-ha-ha!! Come on, Dace, tell that shi̲tty king to get ME out of here quickly! Tell him!! Soon we’ll fight to the DEATH… to the DEATH… soon~~~!”
After putting Gungnir down gently on its pedestal, Dace gave reply to the voice that had turned into a scream.
“Understood, you can place your trust in me.”
When she turned her back and was about to leave Gungnir’s preservation room, Surtr, who had calmed down a bit compared to earlier, called out to her with another question.
“Oh, there’s one last thing. The one who defeated Samaeyl… what’s their name?”
“Alim Nariwei.”
“…Huh, her? Isn’t she that beautiful girl everyone’s talking about…?”
“The very same. Though in truth, Alim is a boy.”
“What the-…”
TL notes:
Another look at our antagonists, with a pretty big bomb at the end. It’s getting more obvious that Dace might be the one masterminding the whole plan, though her goals remain unclear. The fact she knows Alim’s secret, which no one except for Mika should, shows that her prophetic ability is on a much higher level than she let on so far.
