“What… what are we going to do today?” Rir asked me.
A night had passed since we handed in the SS-Rank magic cores. Today, I was planning to follow up on Kanata’s advice from yesterday. I was going to make a skill and then visit that blacksmith. That was about it.
I decided to relay that to Rir.
“Seein’ we finally managed to get to SS-Rank, I was thinkin’ of addin’ another skill to my roster. And then go to a blacksmith to take care of some stuff.”
“…A blacksmith? For what reason?”
“Your current main weapon is a summoned axe that consumes MP, Rir. And that iron axe has too little power, y’know. We have both the money and the materials, so let’s get you a proper one made. While we’re at it, I can also get myself a spare sword.”
“Woof, that’s true. Thank you.”
In the past, she’d have said she doesn’t need it, but she no longer acts that way. Hm… is that also a result of our relationship makin’ progress? Or is it ’cause we now have money?
“For now, let’s eat breakfast and then think about skills. If you want to, you can also make one for yourself, Rir.”
“Woof~… You’re right. That would probably be a good idea.”
Right after finishing breakfast, Rir and I got to work, racking our brains over skill synthesis.
For now, I gotta learn some fire type healing skill.
Following Kanata’s suggestions, I mainly synthesized Restoration, Abnormal Dispel, Enhancement, Fire, and Light Magic. As a result, I managed to get my hands on an SS-Rank fire type healing skill called [Divine Sacred Flame’s Restoration].
Rir, on the other hand, made use of her fire and wind type skills, and created [Secret Blazing Gale Axe God Dance Technique1].
While we were at it, we had also gotten more STP2, of which I allocated 50’000 to MP, 25’000 to S, and 10’000 each to A and W. Rir, meanwhile, invested 5000 each into MP, S, and W, and 4000 into A.
“Woof. Is this enough for now?”
“Yep, should be. Next, let’s go to that smithy Kanata told me about.”
“Woof, woof.”
Immediately after finishing out stat and skill management, Rir and I went to the blacksmith. We reached the shop and went inside, but it was quite small with no employees other than a single middle-aged man.
Well, that’s how Kanata described it.
“Welcome…” the man said rather curtly.
This guy’s apparently the best blacksmith in this town. From his looks, I certainly ain’t gettin’ the feelin’ he’s that skilled.
“Erm, do you know a boy called Kanata, Sir?”
“I do. The lad came here, just the other day. Did he tell ye to come here?”
“Yes, he did.”
“Oh-ho…”
The man3 left the counter and came to us. There was a slightly pungent smell of sweat coming from him. It looked like it gave Rir, with her good nose, a bit of trouble.
“…Mind if I ask ye somethin’?”
“Not at all… what is it?”
“That beastfolk girl over there… I’m guessin’ she’s a slave, so-”
Does this guy think beastfolk equals slave? I gotta convince him that ain’t so.
“She ain’t a slave. She’s important to me… as my companion and girlfriend.”
“O-Oh.”
Maybe because I’d lost my temper a bit, the man seemed somewhat surprised, but his expression immediately changed to a beaming smile.
“Ha-ha, I see. That’s fine, then. This is just me own view, but… I don’t think those who see people as things are suited to wield weapons… Ye are alright.”
Oh, I get it. He’s that type of person, ain’t he…?
“Great! I’m takin’ the job. Did ye bring the materials? And what do ye want me to make?”
“Yes, we have the materials…! I would like you to make an axe and a sword, Sir.”
“Lemme see those materials, then.”
First things first, I took out orichalcum.
“Oh-ho!? Orichalcum, is it…? Alright… now that’s a job worth doin’.”
The middle-aged man’s mood improved. Next, I brought out S-Rank magic cores and several magic cards that might be useful.
“Ye want me to use those magic cards if there’s an opportunity? And those S-Rank magic cores, too?”
“Yes. That’s it.”
Finally, I took out S- and SS-Rank monster materials that came from the treasure chest, and part of the Mountain Eater materials. As soon as he took those materials, the blacksmith went in and out of the shop’s back.
“…With this stuff… I’ll be able to craft some supreme weapons…!”
“Seriously?”
“Yes, I’m sure. Lemme see… it’ll take ’bout five days. The price will be four million bells per weapon, so…?”
Guess we gotta sell some more monster materials later. We should get that much quickly enough.
“That’s fine with us, Sir.”
“Alright~, I’ll take on the job, then!”
Kanata warned me that the man was choosy, but we somehow managed to get him to craft our weapons. Though Rir seemed to be spacing out.
We went to earn four million bells by selling magic beast materials, ate lunch, and then returned home.
“Now… Rir, is there somethin’ you’d like to do?” I asked her right after we got home. “We probably don’t have anythin’ else to-”
She suddenly hugged me without any clear reason.
“Shuu… I love you.”
“Hey, hey, what’s gotten into you?”
“…It made me so happy that you called me your girlfriend again.”
“Oh, I see.”
For the time being, I returned her embrace.
Afterwards, we spent several hours normally, ate dinner, and had our baths, until all that was left was going to bed. And Rir… she was, once more, wearing the suggestive underwear as she arrived at the bed. Furthermore, exactly as she had done the other day, she laid down without covering herself with the futon, facing away from me.
“Rir…”
Did me callin’ her my girlfriend make her that happy…? Guess that’s the only explanation for her actin’ like that. Still…
“Rir, I get how you feel, but we just did it the day before yesterday… Let’s at least wait one or two more days, alright? This is tough for me.”
Her ears flopped down, and she looked at me. Then, she mumbled something in a small voice.
“In two days… absolutely…”
“Yep, gotcha. That’s fine for me.”
“Awoo!”
After jumping off the bed, she soon returned in her pajamas. She crawled under the covers and snuggled up to me. And then, she turned to me, kissed me on my cheek, and closed her eyes with a look of satisfaction.
TL notes:
A mix of a stat-screen (thank Jizou for no actual stat screens and all the throw-away skills for synthesis), shopping, and relationship chapter.
As I wrote before, Rir seems a bit too forceful considering her background, but since the author never gave us any details, it’s hard to say how her past experiences would affect her relationship with Shuu.
One thing that becomes more and more grating the more people from Yggdrasil we encounter, is that we never see anything of all those discrimination and poor public order issues that were mentioned before. We haven’t encountered a single instance of discrimination against beastfolk and, apart from the king and the slaver back in volume 9, most people seem to dislike slavery.
Footnotes:
- This one is just awful. The original is 焔嵐斧神術奥義演舞, which is a crazy mess of Kanji that could very well be translated completely differently.
- It says SKP in the original. Clearly a typo.
- Here, Shuu mentally changes to think of the man as おじさん instead of おっさん. They both can mean “middle-aged man”, but the latter seems derogative. Not sure if there’s a good derogative version of this in English. Stuff like “old fart” seems to be for older people than that.
