“Huh, Kanata. Aren’t we going to the dungeon today?” Sakura asked, when she saw him nestled beneath a blanket on the couch, not about to move from the looks of it.
“Mh… It’ll be fine. Let’s take a break today. The day before yesterday… that blacksmith told me that it’ll take a day longer, so that’s why.”
“Couldn’t we still go to the dungeon, then?”
“Eh… I’m tired~, I don’t wanna get up~.”

This was how Kanata occasionally got. While he usually spoke and acted while thinking ahead, he had the tendency to laze around all day, when he had no obligations.

Sakura understood him well in that regard. Even if he told her that he’d take it slow, he was mostly in a “I don’t wanna do any work” mood, so she might manage to entice him to play something.

It bears mention that the kids were already close to their goal. They had used Reincarnation 13 times and only needed another round through the dungeon to reach the level cap again. Kanata explained to Sakura that he wanted to use that one remaining round to test their new weapons.

“Gotcha… So, today you’ll just laze around?”
“Uh huh…”
“Still, Kanata, breakfast is ready.”
“…I’ll eat.”

Kanata sluggishly got out from under the blanket and started stuffing his cheeks with the bacon, eggs, and salad Sakura had lined up on the table.

“Yummy~…”
“Thank you. So, what should we do today?”
“I’d like to take it slow today… If there’s something you want to do together, just tell me.”
“Nothing comes to me right now… I’ll think about it.”
“Uh huh… *nom*…”

Once Kanata finished eating breakfast, he went back to the sofa.

“So sleepy…”
“…You’re going to take nap? It’s not even noon, yet. Hey, let’s play something.”
“Sure, but what?”
“I’ll use pen, paper, and scissors to make a Shogi board and pieces, then we can play that.”
“Alright.”

After buffing her dexterity and quickness with support magic, Sakura drew a Shogi board and the pieces onto the paper Kanata had given her.

“Let’s start! I’ll go first.”
“Hm. Go ahead.”

In the end, the two kids played 10 Shogi matches. As for the result…

“A complete loss… You’re really good at both Othello and Shogi, aren’t you, Kanata? Though you’re the only one in our class who I can’t beat at Shogi.”
“Heh-heh-heh… I guess. What do you want to do next?”
“…Let’s make some sweets, then. We don’t have to go to that store today.”

Due to Sakura’s suggestion, the kids decided to make fruit tarts. They went outside to buy the ingredients.

While they were doing that, Kanata acted as reliable as usual. He predicted that it’d be close to noon when they’d return to the inn, so he also bought ingredients for a lunch that would be different from what they usually had.

“Bread flour and cake flour…? What are we going to cook?”
“We’ll mix them to get all-purpose flour and make udon noodles1. Fish sauce exists in this world, so we can even make broth to go with them.”
“It’s been a while since we had Japanese food… I guess that’s a safe choice.”

For that reason, Kanata and Sakura made use of their skills to make udon. They cooked a large enough quantity to last them for three days, even if they ate it thrice per day, and also preserved some of it.

“Was udon always this delicious?”
“I guess it’s partly our skills and partly that we haven’t eaten it in a while.”
“Probably.”

After talking for a bit about making soba noodles in the near future, seeing that buckwheat flour existed in this world, they started making fruit tarts. Said tarts also were a huge success.

At 3 pm, they each were eating half of a whole fruit tart. They had made it just the right size for that.

“So tasty! Hey, Kanata! Should we make cakes and stuff tomorrow, too?”
“Sorry, that’d be too much work, after all.”
“Grr… Then occasionally?”
“Occasionally… should be fine.”

The two kids finished eating the tart.

Now was the time for an afternoon nap. At this point, Kanata normally would’ve chosen to play video games, but handheld gaming consoles didn’t exist in this world, so he settled on a nap instead.

“Sorry about that, Sakura, but… could you wake me when dinner is ready?”
“Sure, I will. Sleep tight.”
“Later~…”

Once she had verified that Kanata was fast asleep, Sakura took out pen and paper and started to thoroughly and carefully draw the sleeping face of the boy who might be mistaken for a girl by those who didn’t know him well.

“Wakey wakey, Kanata. It’s time for dinner. Today we’re having beef stew.”
“Mh~. Thanks for waking me.”

Sakura felt full of bliss about the day’s events. They had played to their heart’s content, ate exquisite udon noodles and sweets, she then got to use her drawing skill to immortalize Kanata’s sleeping face until she was satisfied, and finally she could act like a wife as she prepared dinner and then woke the boy from his slumber. She was truly happy.

Kanata tried some of her beef stew.

“Mh~! It’s so yummy.”
“Eh-heh-heh, that’s great~! I made enough so each of us can have a second helping, alright?”
“Hm, gotcha.”

After Kanata took seconds and had his fill of the beef stew, he went to take a bath. As he did that, Sakura, knowing full well that she shouldn’t, peeped on him with Clairvoyance.

Time passed until it was time for bed, and Sakura went to sleep while holding Kanata in a tight embrace. The boy had to spend 30 minutes distracting himself from being nuzzled against Sakura’s body – more developed than other girls her age- until his childhood friend finally fell asleep.

Once he had verified that she was fast asleep, he teleported to the sofa where he finally managed to fall asleep himself.

On the following day around 3 pm, Kanata and Sakura got a summons from the blacksmith.

“They’re done… here ye go!” he told the kids as he carried out a sword and a spear from further inside his store.

First things first, they appraised them and learned that they were national treasure grade. As for their appearance… Both the sword and the spear had black grips that shone green depending on how the light hit them. The blades of both weapons were silver with a faint blue sheen. They also had wonderful decorations.

“Hah…! I can feel my excitement building! Ah… Ah~! A supreme weapon… How marvelous~!”

As he raved like that, Kanata rubbed his cheeks against the “Greenglow Black Ant-Lion Spear of Unparalleled Decapitation”, and when he poked and prodded the weapon, he accidentally touched the blade and drew blood.

“Ah… ouch!”
“Come on… jeez… Just what are you doing?”

Sakura immediately healed his injury with Restoration Magic.

“Tee-hee… At any rate, thank you very much, Sir.
“Right. If ye want somethin’ else crafted, just gimme a call!”

Kanata immediately paid the blacksmith a total of 3.5 million bells (only part of the money he had gained from the items and magic beast corpses they had obtained in the dungeon, though Sakura didn’t know when he went to sell them), and the kids left the store and then teleported to the dungeon.

TL notes:
It’s nice to see that Kanata has this other, lazy side. For most of the time since coming to Anazamu, he had to act as a protector for Sakura, get stronger, and navigate tense conversations/negotiations with Loukis and other people in the castle, so he seemed almost too perfect in his capabilities.

Footnotes:

  1. The original is 中力粉にして、うどん作る。 (“go with all-purpose flour and make udon.”). It’s either that they mix the two kinds of flour Sakura mentions to get it, or they also might have bought this kind of flour along with bread and cake flour.
