The moment we entered the boss stage, the large gate closed behind us. And at the same time, the whole place, which had been dark, lit up all at once.
You couldn’t call the now visible area anything but strange. We were in a dungeon, but there was a sky. It was cloudless and bright, with the sun blazing down brilliantly. The ground at our feet was level. It was like a field with neatly mowed grass.
Finally, straight ahead, an enormous eagle sat with its wings folded.
…Or rather, ain’t that the guy that blew us off the cliff and down into the valley? The color is a bit different, but… it looks mostly the same.
The one we had encountered outside sported a brown color, but this one had a lot of red mixed in with the brown, and the tips of its tail and wings shone emerald green.
In other words, this guy’s a subspecies of the large eagle that blew us off the cliff.
I used Magic Beast Expert to look up information about it. It was apparently called “Giant Eagle of the Blazing Gale – Mountain Eater1“. A subspecies of the magic beast “Giant Eagle – Mountain Eater”. Normal Mountain Eaters were SS-Rank monsters, but this one was as strong as three of them.
So, he’s even more powerful than the guy who attacked us, ain’t he?
«A boy with black hair and black eyes… and a wolfkin girl…?»
The hell~!? It can talk!?
Rir also looked shocked.
«My name is Giant Eagle of the Blazing Gale… Maintain Eater! I am the true lord of this dungeon!»
It gave off a single roar-like cry, while spreading its wings.
Oh, this fits the atmosphere a lot better, don’t it? If we hadn’t used Reincarnation so often, this might’ve made me nervous.
«You did well to come here, small beings! I, Mountain Eater, shall show you my… What the-!?»
In apparent shock, the eagle hopped back a few times. It looked exactly like a scared crow or pigeon fleeing from a threat.
Just what spooked it that much…?
«You… you fiends… just how much magic power do you have? It’s abnormal! Are you truly human and beastfolk? You especially, boy, could you be an evil god wearing the skin of a human…? Monsters! There’s no way I can fight someone like this! Curses!»
A monster just went and called us monsters.
The panicked bird flew up towards the sky.
“Rir, what should we do?”
“Let’s defeat it together.”
“Alright, let’s. Set the size to small and the power to high.
“Understood!”
Rir murmured “Jörmungandr” and held out her hand. Then, together with black light, a war axe, much more magnificent than some poorly decorated high grade weapon, appeared in her hand. This time, she had summoned a version of it that was on the smaller side, but normally its blade alone would be about as big as Rir herself. And she was still able to swing it around with ease…
I also judged that killing it with cuts would produce better materials than burning it, so I chanted “Muspell”. A sword appeared in my hand. It was the weapon of a fire god.
Rir and I each swung our blades. We both used a single ability from our Secret God Technique skills… at the same time.
The unseen slashes flew towards the Mountain Eater. The giant bird, who had laid out a net of magic (most likely stronger than S-Rank skills) and was circling around in mid-air, was cut into four pieces, though it didn’t end up as neatly as it could’ve been.
The corpse of the monster, which hadn’t even been given the luxury of going through its death throes, fell to the ground. Together with three SS-Rank magic cores.
Didn’t think we’d defeat it in a single attack, but it’s dead, so we got that goin’ for us.
“Woof! Look, Master… It’s a treasure chest and… a sword, I think?”
“Oh!?”
As Rir had noticed ahead of me, there was a chest and a sword. As for the weapon’s appearance; to put it simply, it had a red hilt, a black base with a red pattern on it, and a silver blade with a faint green sheen. It was a fantastic sword.
Rir and I rushed towards the treasure chest and opened it together. Inside was a large number of magic cores, ranging from C- to SS-Rank, enough gold, silver, and gems to net the equivalent of several hundred million yen if sold… and numerous accessories2. There were also skill cards and magic cards.
The biggest treasure among it was the following:
“Nongleipnir3, Binding Bracelet of the Blazing Gale Eagle” -Status → Best -Quality → Highest -Value → Legend Materials: Orichalcum, Various gems, Giant Eagle of the Blazing Gale saliva, Rock Bear King sinew, Enchanted -Type → Magic Bracelet Description: |
Base dexterity apparently only meant the dexterity you got from level-ups and didn’t include that from STP and skill bonuses. I other words, it was almost negligible from our perspective.
Incidentally, the 300 defense it said on the accessory… That would apparently be converted into about 3000 of the normal stat4. Why didn’t they just write down 3000 then?
“You can take this one, Rir.”
“Huh…!? Are you sure?”
“Yep. Let’s also use that ‘Stainproof and Everlasting’ enchantment on it. I’ll take this one instead, seeing we got exactly two pieces of legend grade equipment, so let’s split them.”
“Eh-heh… In that case, don’t mind if I do!”
I used the magic card on the bracelet and then gave it to Rir. She immediately equipped it. It suited her and looked lovely.
Right… This is the thing I want. This cool sword that’s stuck in the ground for whatever reason.
“Lævateinn5, Magic Sword of Fusion and Fire” -Status → Best -Quality → Highest -Value → Legend -Materials: Orichalcum, Giant Eagle of the Blazing Gale beak, Black Fire Dragon inverted scale, Goldlock Horse golden hair, Enchanted -Type → Magic Sword Description: |
In other words, I can put my Muspell into this sword, and when I do, Muspell’s power will be added to it, and its abilities will even be further increased.
That’s just the sword for me.
When I pulled the sword from the ground, a scabbard appeared from out of nowhere, which I gracefully accepted. I also used “Stainproof and Everlasting” and enchantments that increased sharpness and attack power, which I had gotten from the challenge room, on it.
After we both had equipped and tested our new gear, we stored away the treasures and the Mountain Eater’s corpse in the limitless magic bag.
“We didn’t miss anythin’?”
“It looks like we’re fine.”
“Let’s leave, then.”
Rir and I went into the exit-looking place overflowing with light, which had appeared unnoticed.
Then, we reappeared outside…
TL notes:
Thus ends Shuu’s and Rir’s dungeon adventure. Next time, we’re back to Alim and Mika.
It’s fun to see that while high-end dungeon bosses have all these lines they’re probably supposed to say when facing challengers, they are fully sentient and capable of reason, as the unfortunate eagle here demonstrates. At least it was over quickly for it compared to what Alim did to Rose.
Unlike Alim’s dungeon, here even the rewards seem to be tailor made for Shuu and Rir. The fact that the sword wasn’t in the chest is puzzling, but I guess we haven’t seen enough dungeons to judge what’s normal and what’s not.
Footnotes:
- The original is フレスベルク (furesuberuku). This might be “Fressberg”, consisting of the two German words “fressen” (“to eat”, only used for animals) and “berg” (“mountain”). It might also be meant as “a huge (like a mountain) animal that devours things” instead of “something that eats mountains”.
- Not 100% sure here, the accessories might be included in the stuff to sell, or they might not.
- The original is ノングレイプニル (nongureipuniru). Gleipnir is the binding which holds the wolf Fenrir in Norse mythology. No clue what the “non” modifier is supposed to mean, maybe it’s an inferior version?
- I’m not sure I understood that correctly. The original talks about something 300 on the accessory being converted to 3000 normal status. I assume it’s talking about this “defense +300”.
- The original is レーヴァテイン (reevatein). Lævateinn is a weapon crafted by Loki in Norse mythology. It might be a dart, a sword, or a wand.
