When they kids entered the next room, they were faced with a large centipede. This magic beast was also black, with green light shining from its eyes and the gaps in its exoskeleton.
“A centipede…? I’m not sure why, but it’s not grossing me out1,” Sakura commented.
“That’s because it feels like a video game, doesn’t it? Soi~!”
Kanata threw his spear. Same as with the donkey earlier, he made full use of Psychic Magic to stab the pointlessly cool-looking centipede multiple times, causing it to collapse with a loud thud. From its corpse, two B-Rank magic cores emerged.
“I wonder, do all the magic beasts in here look this cool?”
“W-Well…”
After retrieving the monster’s remains, the two kids advanced to the next room. There, five pitch-black human-shaped beings carrying swords and with green light appearing and disappearing in some spots on their bodies, awaited them.
“Oh~… These things also look cool…”
“They all feel like foes in games that you’d like, Kanata, don’t they.”
“They sure do… Heh-heh-heh, after all, this is how dungeons should be. It all comes down to getting excited, right?”
While the two kids had their carefree chat, the five monsters charged at them. However, before they could reach them, they were pierced by a spear moving in a weird, winding manner, skewering them all at once as if they were dangos. Kanata had thrown his spear while controlling it with telekinesis.
The skewered foes disappeared like sand being blown away by the wind. The only things that remained were their swords and 10 D-Rank magic cores.
“Huh? They’re already gone?”
“I just defeated them, you see… Looks like they don’t leave behind corpses. Just their swords and magic cores.”
“You managed to stab them all at once?”
“Well… that’s who I am. Muah-ha-ha!”
Kanata displayed a smug grin. In reaction, Sakura pinched his cheek.
“Yeowch!?”
“Come on, let’s move to the next room.”
“…Alright.”
Once more, the kids moved to the next room. There was a large gate on its other side. And in front of it stood a myrmecoleon.
Only, it was different from a normal specimen, with its fur and skin darker, his eyes and claws glowing in a machine-like green, and, most strikingly, the hairs on its mane and tail also appearing pale green, depending on how the light hit them.
Rather than being excited that the next room after this would be the boss, Kanata was enraptured by the myrmecoleon’s appearance.
“That’s cool… super-cool… incredible…”
“It definitely looks incredible… and strong.”
“That thing’s probably a myrmecoleon. It’s an A-Rank magic beast that apparently shows up often. But its appearance is off in some places… it might be a subspecies. I mean, to begin with, all the monsters up to this point were subspecies.”
In this world, “subspecies” didn’t mean inferior beings, but stronger mutations of existing monsters.
“I’ve decided! Soi~!”
“What did you decide?”
“I’m going to use the myrmecoleon materials to have a blacksmith forge me my personal partisan!”
“Really…? That’s good, I guess?”
Sakura gave her approval to Kanata’s idea, while she watched the monster, which already had stab-wounds in several places, breathe its last.
“By the way, Sakura2. Doesn’t it look like that’s already the end of the dungeon?”
“Seems so… This felt a bit short.”
“Hm~? You think so? Well, whatever, let’s go out-”
The moment Kanata took her hand, he fell silent and started looking intently someplace, as if he was focusing on a single point. He was gazing at a corner of the room.
“Kanata…? Is something wrong?
“No… it’s that, over there… I wonder, why is this the only corner of the room with a green line on it?”
“Huh…”
“Hey… could we take a closer look?”
“Well, I don’t see why not.”
The two kids let go of each other’s hands and got closer to the mysterious green line. Kanata tapped and knocked on the spot, bringing his ear close to it to listen to the sounds it made.
“Did you find something?”
“Not sure… but there seems to be something. Sakura, please take some distance.”
“Hm.”
“Matchless Thunder!”
Kanata shot his magic at the corner. With a loud crash, the wall collapsed.
“Oh~…! It’s a hidden room!”
“It’s… it’s true! Kanata, that’s amazing!”
“Ah~~, incredible… I’m getting excited! How magnificent! Oh~!”
“…Yes, we both know it’s amazing, so will you calm down already?”
When Kanata got overly excited and started to dance in joy while striking weird poses, Sakura gave him a flick to his forehead. It wasn’t very painful.
“Ouch!”
“Jeez… Let’s check out that room already.”
“…Yes.”
The two kids entered the hidden room. That moment, a message appeared in their minds.
[Move the rectangular object by attacking it and bring it to the goal in three minutes or less. The mission will be cleared, if this is achieved within the time limit. Furthermore, the faster you reach the goal, the better the treasure chest’s contents will be. Well then, mission start!]
TL notes:
Looks like the dungeon’s theme very much fits Kanata’s dark and edgy fantasies. Consequently, he’s mostly in chuunibyou mode during this chapter.
Once more, the challenge mission seems suspiciously tailored to this team with their teleportation. Though here it’s possible that Loukis (or Dace) knew about the challenge rooms in the dungeons under the country’s control and picked one that would suit Kanata.
[You have entered the secret stage of Nifl Forest’s dungeon “Wrath”. Here, a mission will be given to you. When you complete the mission, a treasure chest will appear. The contents of the treasure chest you receive will change depending on the achievement level.]
