It was the day after they had visited the castle. Kanata and Sakura were talking about their plans for the day while eating breakfast.

“And that’s why I was thinking about checking out that dungeon, Sakura. If possible, I’d like to try going through it once1.”
“I’ll follow your lead in that regard, Kanata… Oh, there’s some sauce on your mouth, you know~…”
“Huh, really?”

She brought her hand to Kanata’s mouth and made a show of wiping something off. As a matter of fact, there hadn’t been anything there. After a moment of hesitation, she put the finger with nonexistent sauce on it into her mouth. It was to flaunt it to Kanata.

“Hey, don’t go spacing out now. Quickly finish eating breakfast. Or are saying that the food I cooked… isn’t tasty?”
“N-No. It’s super tasty. But Sakura… has something changed about you since yesterday? I mean… it’s kinda… at any rate, something changed.”
“Why did you ask that twice?”

Following Kyrian’s advice from the day before, Sakura had decided to change how she acted a little. In truth, she considered the way she behaved tremendously embarrassing. However, she kept telling herself that it was to make Kanata happy, if only a little. Besides, getting closer to him physically didn’t solely make her uncomfortable, but also brought her some joy.

“…Nothing happened to you, right?”
“I’m fine. Thanks to you helping me train, I think I should be able to handle most things myself.”
“Well, I guess that’s true.”

A short time later, the two kids finished their breakfast, changed into different clothing (this was the one point where Sakura didn’t follow Kyrian’s suggestion, so she chose clothing on the lower end of the exposure spectrum for this country), and then used Kanata’s teleportation to move to the vicinity of the dungeon Loukis had permitted them to use.

“Dang, I didn’t hit the spot perfectly…”
“But you can see the large hole… the dungeon over there. You were almost spot on.”

Following Sakura’s line of sight, there was a deep hole. The two kids had learned about the peculiarities of dungeons from Dace. They got close to the hole and peered inside.

“It looks kinda artificial, doesn’t it?”
“You’re right. That stuff you can see on the floor… I wonder what that is?”

The bottom of the hole reminded them of the lab of a mad scientist.

“Well… At any rate, we should try going in… right?”
“Kanata… Why do you have this on you?”

Kanata had put the black eyepatch over one of his eyes and was grinning while he struck a weird pose.

“Heh… I had it on me as we crossed dimensions. It had been stored away in that jet-black educational attire of mine…”
“Huh… So, you kept this thing in your uniform pocket all this time?”
“Yep. It doesn’t put much pressure onto my eye, so it won’t cause any damage2. As a matter of fact, I’ve already worn it several times in the past few days,” Kanata explained while striking another puzzling pose.

Sakura decided to ignore his antics. Inwardly, she felt happy that he was still using her birthday gift from several years ago.

“Hang on… Didn’t you stop wearing it in front of other people since it was embarrassing…? I mean, I’m glad that you treasured it all this time, but…”
“Ha-ha-ha… I’ll manage… Alright, in we go!”
“Eh… hang on… give me-”

Kanata quickly grabbed Sakura’s hand and moved them to the dungeon’s entrance. That moment, letters appeared in their minds.

[You have entered Nifl Forest’s3 dungeon “Wrath”.]

“Sakura, Sakura, this is feeling more and more like the real thing! Hah… this is going to be so much fun… Right, Sakura?”
“Kanata… please calm down a bit… There might be life-threatening traps and powerful magic beasts here.”
“I guess that’s true. Heh… I seem to have neglected my vigilance.”
“Are you still going on with that?”

Sakura waited for Kanata to come down from his high, and then cast as much support magic on him as possible.

“Thank you. Alright, then let’s quickly move on.”
“R-Right!”

Since they were here for the first time, they advanced with slow steps.

They then were immediately faced with a single magic beast, which was waiting in a wide room. From its shape, the monster looked like a donkey, but its whole body was black for some reason except for its eyes, which shone green. It somehow gave off a machine-like feeling.

“What’s that…? That’s so cool…!”
“Right… it’s definitely somewhat cool. Even though it’s a donkey.”
“Good… I’ll try taking it down, then!”

Kanata threw his spear at the donkey, instantly piercing it. That moment, the spear vanished. It then reappeared from seemingly out of nowhere, stabbing the monster again. By utilizing Psychic Magic, Kanata had caused the spear to hit its target twice.

The black donkey was unable to offer any resistance and died within seconds. Five C-Rank magic cores emerged from its corpse.

“Kanata… you’re so strong…”
“Muah-ha-ha… I guess so? That power is mine is a thing of wonder.
“Yeah… I have to admit, it is.”

While the two kids talked to each other, the door to the next part of the dungeon opened.

“So, it’s the type where the door opens after you win…? Alright, let’s move on.”

TL notes:
And we’re back to Kanata and Sakura who’ll start tackling their dungeon from now on. This also somewhat confirms that the emotion monikers attached to the dungeon names determine the type of dungeon it is. So far, we’ve seen:

Joy → Lots of enemies, no restrictions, just reach the boss gate and you’re good to go. May have side paths.
Wrath → A sequence of rooms with enemies that need to be defeated to advance, with the boss gate at the end.
Grief → Enemies in several separate rooms. All rooms need to be cleared to access the boss, but they can be done in any order.

Footnotes:

  1. The original is 1週したい (“want to do a week”), which I assume is a typo, since “week” is normally written as 週間 and the author has mixed up 週 and 周 (“round”, “lap”) before.
  2. The original says it’s 目に良い (good towards the eye). Maybe he means that it allows one eye to rest when he wears it?
  3. The original is ニヴルの森 (“Forest of Nivuru”). It’s most likely from Niflheim, the realm of mist from Norse mythology. This would make it Mist Forest.
