Something warm was touching my hand.
What’s this…? Seems to be exactly the temperature of the human body…

With my vague consciousness, I tried grabbing it. When I did that, my hand was grasped back.
So, this thing’s a hand, ain’t it?

About when I realized that, I could hear the voice of a girl next to my ear.

“…ke up, …ster.”

I can’t understand what she’s saying.
When I thought that, something shook my body left and right.

“Please~ wake~ up~, Master~!”

What, is Rir trying to wake me up? At any rate, her voice sounds tired, don’t it? What would’ve happened if I hadn’t pressed her to sleep, too?

For now, I raised my upper body.

“Mornin’, Rir.”
“Master… good… *yawn*… good morning…”
“You look tired. Get some rest, Rir.”
“Mh… good night… Master…”

Rir crawled into her own sleeping bag.

When I checked for the sake of cation, exactly five hours had passed since I went to sleep. She was likely rather tired; while I had taken my eyes off her, she had already fallen asleep and was breathing steadily.

First, I washed my face and rinsed out my mouth. This was mostly to wake me up.

Having woken up properly, I took a look around the clearing Rir had made. There was only the bonfire, but it was enough to illuminate the whole area. One third of the clearing was covered in wood shavings. Rir had probably used Lumber Processing the whole time.

Well, she had nothin’ to do for five hours.

Maybe since she had already stored the finished products in the magic bag, there was nothing around, though I did find a curious item she hadn’t finished yet. It was a wooden doll with only the face carved, and “Master” written on its back.

Is she tryin’ to play some prank on me? Looks like she had too much free time, after all.

Now, what should I do?

Strength straining? Nah, I don’t wanna get all sweaty. Should I perform maintenance of our tools, then? Nope, looks like Rir already did that. In that case, should I look at her face while she sleeps… the hell am I thinkin’? I’m not like Ayumu and Mika…

I tried using Great Detection to check whether there were any magic beasts around us. While there surely were a great number of them, none were coming our way. It also seemed like some of them were sleeping.
Maybe that’s due to the effect of the Stealth skill that Rir taught me the other day.

In any case, I got nothin’ to do. Too much free time can be hazardous. Should I go and exterminate all the magic beasts withing range of the normal Detection (not Great Detection) while Rir is sleepin’?

For now, if I keep her in range of Detection and have it active constantly, then even if I’m some ways off, I can immediately rush over back to her if somethin’ closes in on her1, and I’ll find my way back to our camp.

It’s decided. Let’s go monster huntin’!

While holding a lamp that used MP to shine, I brought down every single magic beast within Detection range. As a result, other than the sleeping Misery Birds, I hunted down two kinds of magic beasts we hadn’t encountered during the day, likely because they were nocturnal.

The first were of a deer-type. Very big ones, at that. They used the same Fire Emission as I did, so I assumed they were C-Rank. I found three of them.

The other ones were enormous hornless cows, who attacked with ice magic. The spells didn’t seem to have the right size for Emissions, but… I’d check it out once I went back.

That said, the magic cores don’t have the color of C- or D-Rank cores… They might be B-Rank. In that case, we can jump straight to B-Rank once we get back to the city!

There were two of these cows.

Finally, there had been four sleeping Misery Birds who experienced a rude awakening.

Still, even after all this moving around, fighting, and hunting, the night still wasn’t making way to dawn. There were still four hours left, until I’d wake Rir up.

Even after dismantling all the Misery Birds, two deer, and one cow, there were still three hours left.

Due to the smell of blood all over my body, I wiped myself off again.

Afterwards, I used the remaining two and a half hours to make use of the Harvesting and Appraisal skills I had recently obtained, to search for edible plants.

I found a great amount of medicinal herbs. Furthermore, I was lucky enough to discover two kinds of herbs that could be used as flavoring. I had never seen them in Japan, but they were apparently used as food in this world. Though I didn’t discover any vegetables that looked to be edible.

I also improved Harvesting and Appraisal in the process. It was like killing several birds with one stone. Gathering everything to my satisfaction took two hours2.

Guess I should start workin’ on breakfast.
I’ll use the bird (head) bones. And meat as the main ingredient. We have a pot, so I think I’ll be makin’ soup for now.

The soup was done. I had put in a lot of these herbs, so it had a nice smell, and it looked tasty. While it was simmering, I was left with nothing to do, so I had no choice but to read books.

The time had come to wake Rir, so I shook her shoulder and called out to her.

“Uh… mh~…”
“Good mornin’, Rir.”
“Good morning, Master. Uhm… has it already been five hours?”
“Yup. If you hadn’t gone to sleep, it would’ve been tough, right?”
“…Yeah, it would.”
“Exactly. Look, wash your face first, and then we’ll eat breakfast.”
“*Yawn*… Alright.”

TL notes:
Apart from the fact that he left his partner, who he was supposed to protect, alone, solely relying on a skill that may or may not work on every monster, this sure was a productive night for Shuu. With how many edible monsters and plants there seem to be, they shouldn’t have too many issues surviving in this place.

Footnotes:

  1. So, what if there’s monsters that have the equivalent of Stealth and don’t show up on Detection?
  2. It’s also possible that he is left with two hours after gathering everything, but would he already start making breakfast then?
