For a moment, I couldn’t make heads or tails.

When I noticed, Rir was in mid-air, and consequently I was too. I could see the huge eagle behind me.
I got it, it blew us away with air pressure.

“Eek~~~!!” the voice I heard somewhat felt like déjà vu.

I stretched out my hands towards Rir, but she was too far away to reach…
What should I do now? I wonder, if I shoot off an Emission or Cannon spell from my hand, can’t I use its recoil to get closer to her?

While I was falling, maybe because it was the second time this was happening to me, I regained my calm and decided to give this plan a try.

“Just wait, Rir! I’ll come to you in a moment.”
“M-M… Master!?”

She stretched out her hands towards me. While also extending my left hand towards her, I angled my right one behind me and shot off a Fire Emission. The power of the very first Emission spell I ever used turned out to be staggering. Far from just letting me grab her hand, it catapulted me into her. Still, in that instant I managed to properly hold onto her body. Though only with one hand.

“Master… uhm… At least you should survive, somehow… somehow…”
“No, we’ll be fine. I’ll save us both.”

I was convinced of that. I was able to move in mid-air by firing off an Emission spell from the palm of my hand. By making use of that, I should be able to avoid a fatal fall damage.

While holding onto Rir with one hand, I extended the other one downwards.

“Master… we are falling…! I am sorry, so sorry, I couldn’t make up for all the kindness you showed me… Though it’s only been a few days, thank you. I felt happy and safe. If only… If only you could somehow…”
“No, we ain’t gonna die. Hold on tight to me!”
“Eh… but…”
“It’ll be fine, just hold on!”
“Y-Yeah.”

Rir clung to my body.

When we were about three meters from the ground, I fired off a Cannon spell, with reduced heat but maximized output and scale1, from my hand. Its power gently lifted us upwards.

We started falling again, so I fired off another shot, this time with less output than before. I repeated that several times, weakening the impact each time…

Thus, I was able to land without getting any injuries. Even so, I didn’t manage to land on my feet in a cool fashion and fell on my back instead…

“Hey, Rir, we’re safe… Rir?”
“…”

Still clinging onto me, Rir had lost consciousness. I could feel her heartbeat, so I knew she was fine. Maybe because she was a beastfolk, she was holding onto me with so much strength, I didn’t manage to peel her off at all. Moreover, in the position I was in, I had no way to shake her awake.

…I give up, no choice but to stay like this for now.
It’s just, honestly, she’s so soft and smells good… makes it tough for me. This is bad. Please, wake up quickly.

“Ugh… huh? Where am I…? I wonder, did I die…? Somehow, the floor feels warm… If I’m dead, can I see Mom and Dad again…?”
“You’re alive, y’know.”
“Wah~!? Ah… Master!?”

I’d been in this position for around 30 minutes, when she finally woke up.
She then surveyed our surroundings restlessly.

“I am sure… this huge magic beast showed up, and it pushed us off the cliff with wind pressure…”
“I used some magic and managed to land safely.”
“Woof~!?”

Rir jumped up and took some distance from me.
I’m finally free.

Honestly, I managed to endure it. I endured that well, y’know. This was tough… I’d like to pat myself on the back.

“Master, I am sorry. I was lying on top of you…”
“Eh, it’s all good. You’re not heavy.”
“R-Right, so, we’re currently at the bottom of the valley, aren’t we?”
“Yep, we are.”
“I-I see… oh!”

Did she notice somethin’?
That was what I thought, but then she prostrated herself in front of me for some reason.

“Hey… Rir? What are you doin’?”
“This was the second time you saved my life, Master…”
“Nah, you don’t have to interpret that much into it. The first time was because I wanted to save you, and this time… well… I only did what I could…”
“…For rescuing me from certain death two times, I shall devote my entire life to you, Master.”

Huh… seriously, what the hell is this girl sayin’? I told her not to interpret too much into it… I honestly just saved her because I could…

“Though since you’re a good person, you’ll probably tell me that I don’t have to go that far…”
“Seriously, you don’t need to go that… wha-?”

She read me like a book. That’s a bit vexin’.

“Still, I wholeheartedly wish to convey these feelings to you, Master2. Thank you, truly.”
“Uhm… alright.”

Now I feel embarrassed for some reason. If she just keeps thankin’ me like this.

Still… it’s a good thing we managed to survive the drop, our luggage is firmly tucked away, and all the items are in the magic bag since we were in between breaks.

It didn’t look like we lost anything, which was also a good thing. Only… we were in a forest.
How will we get outta here? Looks like we’ve been blown off quite far from where we were originally…

TL notes:
Magic saves the day! Though now they’re in a forest that’s probably teeming with nasties. From how it sounds, they’re at least better prepared than Alim when he was dropped into Pipi Forest, so maybe that’s a blessing in disguise and they’ll be able to hunt a lot more prey now?

Footnotes:

  1. He’s pushing down the heat/firepower (火力) and maximizing the output (出力). Output probably means the shockwave the spell produces, so they are pushed back without being burned.
  2. The original is そのような気持ち、心持ちで私は御主人に着いてく. Thanks to Kemm for explaining how that sentence functions.
