As the enemy headed to Fort Napretep, the hero Fred1 Easley was clearly upset in his room inside the fort.

He had turned Berlomot into a republic under his leadership, but now the princess that had escaped was coming back, trying to reclaim the country. And not only that, but she had managed to convince plenty of people to join her cause, turning into a counter revolution.

“Ugh, but having the people ruling over themselves is so much better than a monarchy, Why can’t they understand something so simple?”

Fred had reincarnated from a modern world, so he felt like the general culture here was extremely outdated. As annoyed as he was, he still continued getting ready to march out to battle, and just when he was done, someone knocked on the door.

“Hero, it’s almost time to depart.” That was the voice of Lamberti, the commander in charge of the fort.

“Yeah, I’m almost ready.” Fred replied and went to open the door. Lamberti was waiting for him outside together with the rest of the party.

“Lord Fred, we need to hurry and save our soldiers.”

Rachel Zelk, a girl with long blonde hair and white nun clothes spoke to him. She was the daughter of a noble family in Sacred Granleuche, and the Bran Church had appointed her as a saintess to accompany the hero.

“Heh, those rebels stand no chance against us, no matter how many they are.”

Another man spoke next. He was Wulbent Corleagne, who wore a robe with golden embroidery, had blue hair, and narrow eyes. He was the heir of the Corleagne family, which was one of the most prominent sorcerer houses in Granleuche, and had managed to return alive from fighting protected monsters, which were known to be as terrifying as natural calamities.

“Careful there. You never know what might happen on the battlefield.”

The next one to speak was Dino, a still somewhat young man with brown skin, wearing a well worn set of leather armor. He had a muscular body, and had been fighting as a warrior for many years.

Those three were Fred’s most trusted allies.

“May victory be in your favor, Hero.” Lamberti bowed respectfully, and Fred replied with a nod full of confidence. “Let’s go then. They’ll see our power first hand!”

And so, the hero Fred and his party headed out to the battlefield.

The troops aiding the counter revolution were more numerous and showcased more variation in species, all of which gave them advantages on every front and they easily crushed Granleuche’s army. But as they were a conglomeration of soldiers from many different countries, they were not used to acting as a single cohesive unit.

Meanwhile, Granleuche’s army was less numerous, composed of only humans, elves, and dwarves, but they were aided by the many forts, and maintained strong unity to stop the attack, except they lacked the numbers to actually fend them off.

But things were about to change with the entrance of the hero’s party.

“Time to face me! Raaahhhhhh!!” Dino swung his battleaxe as he charged into the counter rebel troops.
“Not even their ashes will remain. Fiamma Ululato.” Wulbent also unleashed his magic, setting the troops ablaze.
“God of Light, bless your pious followers with your healing and invigorating power. Vento Curativo!” Rachel produced a wind that passed through Granleuche’s army, healing all their wounds.

All three of them were the strongest men of Sacred Granleuche, and just one of them was as powerful as an army. But the hero Fred was one step above all three of them.

“Time for you to see the power of the hero.” Fred also ran into the counter rebel troops, swinging his sword and unleashing magic at the same time.

“And that’s not all! Caladbolg!” Fred’s sword began to glow and the blade grew to an enormous size. Then he swung it down, releasing even more power, leaving a deep gash on the ground that spanned tens of meters.

The blade continued glowing after that, its power increased even if it was not as destructive as the first strike.

Fred continued running through the enemy army with little regard for his safety, accompanied by Dino and Wulbent. Whenever they were injured, Rachel would heal them instantly.

Back at the fort, Lamberti stood atop the outer walls, watching the battlefield and seeing how things were turning in their favor.

(I really thought I had been forsaken when they tasked me with housing that impertinent hero brat, but he’s more useful than I thought. I guess I won’t need to use the teleportation gate after all.)

There was a hidden room in Fort Napretep housing a teleportation magic circle, known only by a handful of individuals. The gates could not teleport too much at once yet, but it was still enough to teleport powerful individuals like the hero as reinforcements, or to run away if things went south.

Luckily, he did not need to use it for anything this time. The hero Fred was performing well within expectations, so it was only a matter of time before the enemy troops fell.

“Alright, the hero has changed the tides of battle! Let’s use this opportunity to crush our enemies!”
“Yessir!”

Lamberti turned around and gave those orders to his deputy, who replied right away…and then a hole opened through his skull, spluttering blood everywhere.

“What?!”

Lamberti was caught off guard by that, and all he could do was let out a confused voice. As his deputy’s lifeless body fell, he noticed a shadow falling on it. Lamberti looked up and saw…

“It’s…it’s the devil…2

Those were his final words.

With the hero joining the fight, the counter revolution’s army began to suffer major losses, pushing them to consider retreating. But…

A sudden explosion in Fort Nepretep distracted everyone. They heard a second explosion and the ground began to rumble, with plumes of black smoke billowing out from the fort.

“Just what happened there…”

That spread unrest through the battlefield, especially on Granleuche’s side. Some of the soldiers completely stopped fighting to look at the fort.

“Do we still have contact with the fort?! Where’s Commander Lamberti?!”
“Communication just ceased! The gates are closed and we don’t know if the Commander is safe!”

As all contact with the fort ceased, unrest spread through the army on the battlefield. Things were starting to take a turn no one had anticipated. After an ear piercing noise, one of the commanding officers on the battlefield fell limp.

“S-Sir..?”

One of the soldiers attempted to speak to him, but there was no response. A hole between his eyes, from which blood began to flow, served as a grim testament to his fate—far clearer than any words could.

The same noise rang out, and then their general fell in the same way.

Bang!
Bang!

It was like a harbinger of death, with another person dying each time it rang out. And it was not happening in the front lines, but amongst the more important officers in the rear lines.

The sound rang again.

“Kuh!”

But this time, the target, hero Fred, had noticed the source of the sound, and blocked the attack with his sword. After neutralizing it, he looked up at the direction it had come from.

“So it is a sniper! Over there!”

That was standing atop Fort Napretep, under the shadow of all the smoke.

“Take me into the sky, Eir Vento!”

After a short chant, Fred’s body began floating, and then he was enveloped in light as he shot up into the sky. A golden trail of light followed him, looking almost like a shooting star that was returning to space.

He flew as fast as he could, closing the distance toward that.

Before another shot could be fired, he had already arrived and swung his sword, imbued with magic. The winged black armor3 raised an empty hand, a light blue sword of mana extending from it, meeting Fred’s strike head-on.

Their blades clashed, sending sparks of mana scattering in every direction.

“Is that a beam saber or what?!”
“It’s a magic blade.”

Fred shouted by instinct, and the black armor replied with a disinterested voice.
