He was the principal of Morinomiya High, a private high school, and also an active university professor. But Aureo Uber was famous for far more than that.
Many considered him the father of VR technology.
He was renowned worldwide for creating the first Full Dive VR System. Instead of monopolizing the technology for immense personal wealth, he had prioritized making it accessible to the average person. His contributions were most significant in the medical field. For instance, the functionality of the NLD could correct vision without glasses, and when paired with specialized cameras as artificial eyes, it could reverse acquired blindness.
The technology also had indirect applications, such as providing realistic simulations for practicing complex surgeries or introducing prosthetics that moved and felt like real limbs—without requiring painful or risky nerve modifications. Even the development of full-body exosuits had been made easier thanks to his work. Many saw him as a modern-day wizard of innovation.
Despite being in his eighties, Uber was in remarkably good health. His gray hair retained a silvery gloss that gave him a youthful air—though it somehow made him appear timeless rather than merely young. Kou had once seen a photo of him in his forties, and it was astonishing how little he seemed to have aged since then.
He was also the person Kou idolized the most, the one she aspired to emulate. But she knew she still had a long way to go to achieve anything close to his legacy.
And now, he was standing not too far from her, looking directly at her.
Kou was so nervous that she couldn’t think of anything to say. Seeing her struggle, Reo stepped in to break the ice.
“Hey, we meet again. That’s a really cute dress—it suits you.”
“Th-Thank you…”
Since they had already spoken earlier, Kou knew what to expect when Reo took her hand and softly kissed it.
Oh… look, he’s greeting President Amari’s daughter.
You’re right—they look so good together.
Like a prince and princess straight out of a fairy tale.
It must be nice… being young like that.
Kou heard the murmurs from the other guests and endured the discomfort as she quickly pulled her hand back. She then turned her attention to Uber. She was still nervous, but Reo’s intervention had made things slightly more manageable.
“N-Nice to meet you. My name is Mitsuki Kou, the daughter of Mitsuki Amari, and I—”
“Haha, no need to be so nervous,” Uber interrupted gently. “So you’re Kou. I’ve heard a lot about you from Mrs. Amari.”
“I-I see…”
Uber spoke with a calm, reassuring tone, clearly noticing how tense she was. He placed a hand on her shoulder and smiled warmly.
“I hear you’re planning to follow in Sora’s footsteps. Since you’re the daughter of one of my dearest students and former colleagues, you’re always welcome to visit my laboratory if you’re interested.”
“Y-Yes, of course!”
“Good. I believe I mentioned this during my speech at the start of the school year, but my greatest hope is for the younger generation to use the resources we’ve built to grow and thrive. I have high hopes for you.”
With that, Uber turned to speak with Amari, who had been watching the interaction from a distance with a slightly amused smile.
“Good for you, Kou.”
“Yeah, I’m so glad…”
Kou stood there for a moment, replaying the entire exchange in her mind. She eventually turned to Hijiri, her expression radiant with delight.
“Who would have thought your daughter would end up attending my school? I guess you never know where life will take you, wouldn’t you agree… Dem… Ama…is?”
“…Could you stop calling me that name? That’s a life I’ve left behind. Or are you trying to provoke me?”
“I apologize—that wasn’t my intention. I just find it curious how times have changed.”
“I’d wager it’s not time but you who has changed. Becoming a grandfather has made you soft. You’re like a different person, indulging your grandson’s whims.”
Behind Kou, Uber and Amari spoke in hushed tones, holding glasses of champagne. Their familiarity with each other gave the impression they had known each other for many years.
“Psst, Reo, did my mom know your grandfather before they developed the NLD?”
“Oh, you don’t know about that? Our families have a long history together—mostly as rivals.”
“…No way.”
“It’s true.”
Kou was taken aback by Reo’s description of their families as rivals, especially since her mother and his grandfather seemed to be chatting like old friends.
She found it hard to believe and gave Reo a puzzled look, but he simply shrugged awkwardly, as if to say there was more to the story than met the eye.
Afterword:
There might have been a lot of those events in their time over there, but in this side they interact normally like that.
