“Crim, are you okay?”

With Alberich’s help, the devices powering the northern gates of the citadel were activated, opening the way with a grinding sound. Meanwhile, Freya turned to Crim with concern, worried about her mental state. But…

“…To be honest, I don’t like this one bit. But I’ll control myself, if defeating them will save their souls.”

The gates led directly into the land of the undead. Crim’s face was already pale, but she nodded with composure.

“I see… Okay, then I’ll do my best to help you with that!”
“Just don’t push yourself so hard you go berserk like last time.”
“Shut up, Frey. You’ve got no right to say that!”

As they bantered, the massive gates finished opening, granting them passage.

“We’ve got our work cut out for us…”

They followed Alberich’s lead through the gates, entering a narrow alley within the citadel. Crim frowned at the sight.

Since this fortress marked the last defensive line before reaching the empire, it was built like a true stronghold. The outer gates were triple-layered and led into a tight, winding path circling the main keep. The design of the streets made it clear, they had been engineered with specific military intent.

Given the citadel’s reputation as an impenetrable fortress, it was only natural that the streets were designed to repel intruders. They were narrow, winding, and maze-like, filled with chokepoints and hidden ambush zones to turn any invading force into easy prey.

Taking it all in, Crim cast a questioning look at Alberich. He responded with an awkward, apologetic nod.

“There used to be a hidden underground cave for soldiers to traverse faster, but…”
“From thy tale, I gather the plan to overthrow the citadel hath been in motion for generations. So I wouldst wager that cave hath either been destroyed by now…or worse still, transformed into a trap.”

In other words, Crim and her friends had no option but to go along that narrow street with no place to hide in.

So far, they had not seen any sentries protecting the streets, but Crim knew that if she was in charge of protecting the citadel, she would instruct archers to shoot at the invaders.

Filled with apprehension from those thoughts, they warily went around a corner… and then they saw a group of zombies, led by a knight in bombastic plate armor.

«Death Knight»

The undead remains of an elite knight that protected Garland Citadel.
After death, he mindlessly follows his duty to defend the citadel, standing at the frontlines with his combat abilities preserved.

After reading the description of that knight, it was clear that he was one of the knights serving Margrave Garland III when he was still alive.

“Tsk, so the knights from the fortress just had to be here, huh?!”

Crim dashed forward, conjuring a longsword of shadow and striking at the Death Knight. He raised his shield to block, the surface cloaked in a strange darkness.

…That felt strange. It’s almost like he absorbed all the damage.

The eerie sensation left Crim uneasy. Without hesitation, she adjusted the angle of her blade, deflecting the force away from her allies behind her. A split second later, the Death Knight’s greatsword, now also wreathed in the same dark energy, came crashing down. It scraped against Crim’s sword with a burst of sparks before cleaving deep into the wall behind her.

“…Counter attacks are so annoying!”

It seemed like the shield would absorb attacks and transfer that power to the Death Knight’s greatsword.

Crim grumbled in annoyance as she surveyed her surroundings. She noticed that there were zombies falling from the rooftops behind her, on their way to attack her friends.

“Everyone, if we stay clustered in this narrow space and get surrounded, we won’t be able to move! Split into your individual guilds and operate separately! And no flashy moves, our priority is to hold the enemy back and keep advancing!”

Crim shouted orders to the rest while she was kept busy in the frontline, fighting against the Death Knight.

Then again, most of the players there were survivors of that accursed R’lyeh event.

Everyone already had experience fighting as a group, and they barely needed any direction to deal with the zombies in an optimal way, no matter how many of them came.

Seeing that made Crim satisfied, so she addressed her direct friends next.

“Hinagiku, Setsuna, take care of the enemies on the rooftops! Prez, protect our rear!”
“Right away!”
“Consider it done!”

Hinagiku and Setsuna quickly jumped up above the rooftops, which was followed by the violent sounds of blades being swung. It was clear they had already engaged the enemies above.

Kasumi was also in the rear, using the back of her naginata to sweep over the legs of the incoming zombies, and then swinging the blade end to slice through their necks. That made Crim smile, seeing that she had grown enough to stand her ground in dangerous situations when fighting in the frontlines.

“Lycoris, try to find a safe spot and assist the other guilds. Just keep Einstrasse active and watch out for any enemy shooters!”
“Understood. Silver Bullet Reload…Shoot!”

Lycoris used a wire to pull herself up to a rooftop that had been cleared by Hinagiku and Setsuna, and as soon as she was there, she loaded a bullet and began shooting.

Just then, a zombie jumped off another rooftop, trying to get at the other guilds behind them. But Lycroris’ Blank Easel shot a silver streak of light with cleansing properties that pierced through the zombie in mid-air, turning it to dust.

“Freya, Frey, support me! We need to get out of this narrow path!!”
“We got you!”
“Count on us!”

The twins replied right away, the cleansing and fire arrows they shot piercing through various zombies gathering around the Death Knight, turning them to ashes.

Crim appreciated the help from her childhood friends as she began to put strength into her legs.

A moment later, she stepped forward, her feet almost creating an explosion below her as she charged forward and pierced straight through the Death Knight, and cutting down the zombies behind…
