After Freya and Crim returned from their date, they logged into Destiny Unchain Online and went to the garden they usually hung out in, where Adonis was diligently serving tea, and Frey was sitting with a guest.
“Welcome back, you two.”
“Hello Frey~”
“So, what is this… thou hast chosen to return?”
“Yes, thank you for the hospitality, Scarlet Demon Lord! The tea and sweets are really tasty!”
The girl replied with an energetic voice, while displaying surprisingly good manners as she used a fork to carry a piece of cake to her mouth. Hearing that praise, Adonis could not restrain a satisfied smile.
That girl, sitting in front of Frey, was none other than the blonde ninja that had been caught sneaking in before. Now that Crim was looking at her from close by, she noticed that the girl was not actually human.
“Thou… art not quite a demon either… Is that some rare breed, perchance?”
Crim asked while pointing at the girl’s forehead, where two tiny horns were sticking out, but were so small they could easily be missed.
Another trait of demon species was their heightened STR stat, leading to overall muscular characters. No matter how much time one spent on the character creator, it was impossible to make one so lean and small like that girl, or at least that’s what Crim had thought…
“Yeah, I’m a rare Imp! It’s like a hidden demon!”
Crim had never heard of that, so she turned to look at Frey, who tended to comb through the forums to gain information, but he seemed to know as little as Crim.
“The biggest difference with species like Ogres is that I start with a high degree of amiability with humans, so I can freely enter all human and demon territories!”
“Oohhh, and are there other special traits?”
As the blonde girl answered proudly, Crim pressed her for more details, her curiosity piqued. But while Crim waited for a reply, the girl seemed to only have eyes for the cake in front of her and did not say anything more.
There was one explanation…
“…Wait, that’s it?”
“Yeah it is! I mean, other than that, I’m just overall weaker than Ogres, eheh!”
Somehow, the girl was almost proud of proving that explanation right.
Most rare demon species were incredibly powerful, which made it all the more baffling that one of them was actually weaker than even the most common types.
…Or maybe she was hiding something, and sensing that, Crim decided to not pry anymore. It was not very kind to force someone to talk about something they were avoiding.
So after Adonis pulled a seat back for her, Crim joined them at the table and was served a cup of black tea.
“Well, no matter… So may I assume thou hast now withdrawn from thy attempt to take mine life?”
“WHAT?! Crim, why is it that I’m only hearing about something so important now?”
“Ah, well… the first time she came here, she claimed she wanted to take me down on her own, so her father would recognize her ability…”
Crim began to explain what had happened just as Hijiri took a seat—when…
“I see, so she came here uninvited to kill my Master…so that makes her a PK, right?”
“Hiee—?!”
A new voice joined their meeting.
Barely a moment later, a sharp blade rested next to the girl’s neck. Holding that blade was Hinagiku, who had entered unnoticed and her eyes burned with glee as her PK killer mode was activated.
“Ah, Hinagiku. Are you finally free again? It seemed like you were really busy with things in real life.”
“Yes. And I could smell the stench of a PKer so I decided to log in, and it turns out I was right on the money.”
Why is she so scary?
Everyone there thought that, but none dared say it out loud.
“So? Is she one? She has to be a Player Killer, right?”
“Wh-what’s the deal with girl?!”
While Hinagiku grinned with murderous eyes, the girl seemed like she was at the border of tears as she seeked help from Crim.
Yeahh, she can be terrifying.
Crim could wholeheartedly relate to the girl, and feeling sorry for her, decided to offer a helping hand.
“Sit! Hinagiku, sit! She’s a friend, she doesn’t mean us any harm, so just let her be.”
“…Okayy, if you say so…”
Hinagiku eventually let out a disappointed sigh but followed the command, prompting the others to breathe a sigh of relief. Then, Hinagiku was also served some black tea, mixed with a bit of sweet milk, and the conversation resumed.
“…So I told my father what happened the other day, and he said that’s just being a psycho, not a ninja. He looked really mad… like he had a headache or something.”
The girl spoke with a meek voice, trying to be more careful now.
It was clear her father had been truly angry, judging by how dispirited she looked. Still, that gave Crim some peace of mind. If the girl’s father, described as an incredible ninja, reacted that way, then he likely was a decent person too.
“But that’s when it hit me! There’s something more important that I’m lacking to become a proper ninja!”
“And…what would that be?”
The girl clenched her fists and raised her voice, regaining energy, and Crim began to have a bad feeling about it.
“A lord to serve! In other words, I need a master!!”
“…I guess it’s like how ninjas always served a master from the shadows?”
“Yes, that!”
The girl was so energetic that she leaned forward over the table, eager to get closer to Crim.
“With that said… Scarlet Demon Lord Crim, you could be my master if you want!” She declared proudly, then stood up and puffed out her chest so far it looked like her spine was about to crack.
And in response to her confident announcement…
“By the way, why are Crim and Freya sitting so far away from each other today?”
“Huh?! No, nothing happened, nothing at all, nuh-uh!”
“Yeahh, we’re just the same as always, right?”
When Hinagiku pointed that out, Crim and Freya desperately tried to cover it up. A distance away, Frey was laughing his heart out while rolling on the ground.
“You’re lying. You two are always sitting so close you keep rubbing against each other.”
“ “Ghuh..?!” ”
Hearing that, Crim and Freya let out a shocked gasp, turned to look at each other, and then instantly looked away. The game’s way of exaggerating emotions also made both their faces turn bright red, so Hinagiku stared at them more intently, her eyes full of suspicion.
“Hey, don’t just ignore me like thattt!!”
“Woah?! Okay okay, calm down and stop tugging on my cloak!!”
By then, the girl couldn’t wait any longer and began tugging at Crim’s clothes, making her sway from side to side. Crim had no choice but to turn her attention back to her.
“Well, we lack even the most basic of knowledge to offer a proper response… to begin with, what is thy name?”
“Ah, I’m Setsuna!”
When Crim asked, the girl…Setsuna, raised her hands high and replied, smiling brightly like she had not been crying just moments earlier.
*This girl has some really strong mood swings, huh *
Then again, her rapidly changing expressions gave her a childish charm that was fun to watch, which was not bad in itself. She still had the bad trait of not knowing when to shut up, but she did not seem like a bad person, so it would be fine to let her join the guild.
But before that…Crim wanted to test her.
“Very well, but first must I gauge thy strength.”
“…Crim?”
“Don’t stop me, I’ve gotten curious about her.”
There was one thing Crim was interested in and could not get a read on, the girl’s strength.
On one hand, she had not noticed the Doppelgangers or Hinagiku approaching her, and broke into tears when it happened. But at the same time, she had managed to get through most of Castle Seyfert undetected.
“Then, should I just fight you or what?!”
“Yes, I’ll be the one to do it.”
“Okay, let’s do it then!”
With that energetic reply, she nimbly jumped back from her seat, landing in the open area a distance away, and unsheathing her dagger while assuming a low stance. There were no needless movements as she did that, showing she was quite used to it, and also…
Ohh.
Her appearance seemed to shift, a thick murderous aura surrounding her.
That’s a really clean transition, huh.
All emotion seemed to vanish from her face, her eyes focused purely on hunting down her prey and nothing else. But it was still an incredibly large difference compared to how she looked before.
Crim decided she could not let her guard down when dealing with Setsuna, so she formed a dagger and held it firmly.
“…Frey, count us down.”
“Alright, how about starting when the coin hits the ground?”
“Works for me. And what sayest thou?”
Crim asked the girl, who quickly nodded while carefully examining each of Crim’s movements and maintained a certain distance.
Her earlier pitiful appearance was completely gone, her cold eyes seemingly already imagining the bloodbath she wanted to cause. She had fully turned into a killing machine.
Before, she had looked like a naive and clumsy girl, with no malice in her mind. But now, she looked like a demon on the same level as Hinagiku when wielding a blade. Even Crim was shocked by how big that change had been, and how quickly.
It truly was the embodiment of an assassin, a line of work that seemed completely out of place in modern society.
This might turn into an unexpectedly good addition.
Crim began to grin, her heartbeat quickening. Then, with a flick of his fingers, Frey sent a coin spinning through the air—its impact on the stone floor would signal the start of the fight…
