Kamiyama high’s culture festival is ending very soon.
On the internet, words about “Slipped Egg-Eater’s newest work” spread, accompanied by a picture of the Kamiyama High’s Classic Literature Club’s anthology, Hyouka.
The news made waves on the internet. Since her elementary school days, Kana has maintained her writing pace of a volume of “Adventure Tiger” every six months.1 An entire Japanese generation who grew up reading “Adventure Tiger” are now adults, and they are also used to this new tempo.
However, the dispute between Eru and the publishing company have been going for so long that the final volume of “Adventure Tiger”, which was supposed to be released at the beginning of this year, have been delayed by half a year.
When this news came out, everyone came to learn the truth—it turns out that Slipped Egg-Eater have had the manuscript ready for half a year.
And so, the readers started cursing her on bulletin boards, however it eventually died down…
Adventure Tiger is a children story. Its demographic are children between elementary and middle school age. When Kana wrote the first volume of “Adventure Tiger”, Eru still could only read hiragana, not kanji. Other readers were roughly in the same situation.
Fast forward to ten years later, those who were once adorable elementary schoolers have become high schoolers, university students, and even workers… In short, they who shouldn’t still be reading this novel, which is clearly meant for children, came together to create a forum that is dedicated to those who were still attached to this work.
“‘Adventure Tigers’ was introduced to me by my desk neighbor. We promised to go to university together, but she ended up becoming a housewife right after high school graduation. It has been around a year since we last met…”
“I remember that I and my two other friends used to pool our pocket money together to buy the Adventure Tiger when we were kids. After that, one of them transferred school to their hometown, and the other went overseas to study. I’m the only one remaining in this city.”
“I still reminisce that time when I, together with my little brother, raided the bookstores for Adventure Tiger’s decryption cards. He wasn’t as obnoxious as he is now.”
“I solved it! No wonder none of my Adventure Tiger’s copies have the decryption card, they have been shoplifted!2”
“I only learnt it ten years later…”
“You’re right. It has been ten years. Who knows whether that small bookstore in front of the school is still open or not…”
“…”
When they heard that Slipped Egg-Eater released a new work, no one really believed it. The famous writer has created a series which has been running for 10 years and also defined the childhood of an entire generation. How could the author actually be an middle schooler that’s still wet behind the ears? Most of them bet that she is merely an imposter who used her name.
Nonetheless, Hyouka continued to sell more than 500 copies. It’s selling well, considering the whole school only numbered 900 students.
Nevertheless, right now, it is as if the club don’t care about the sales volume of the book…
“Satoshi, did you reject my confession because you were going out with Houtarou?”
“I told you, I’m not gay.”
“Then why would you rather walk home together with Houtarou, rather than waiting for me?”
“That’s because I am in the same class as Fukube!”
“You, shut up!”
“…”
After school, Mayaka interrogated Satoshi in front of the clubroom, blocking the way in. Satoshi tried his hardest to explain, and when Houtarou interjected, he would be told to shut up.
“Sis, this is your fault!” Eru can’t help but to scold Kana again.
Kana stuck her tongue out, she asked while cowering, “Eru, are you angry?”
The sight of Kana sticking her tongue out made Eru’s heart fluttered. Sis is just too cute…the anger bubbling inside Eru extinguished in an instant. She said helplessly, “Sis, you need to get along with others. Otherwise, you won’t have any friends to talk to again.”
“I don’t want to be friends with my rival in love…” Kana muttered.
“Sis, did you say something?”
“I want to eat Kimura Sweets’ ice cream.”
“Be a good girl, then I will buy you some.”
Kana hugged Eru’s waist, embracing and leaning on her sister. Eru caressed her big sister’s head, as if calming down a kid. Kirisaki who was spectating ridiculed them, “Every time I see you two, I would get really confused who is the little sister and who is the older sister.”
Eru hurriedly pull back her hand . She was merely in habit of placating her sister like that, but it wouldn’t be appropriate for the little sister to be the one doing that.
Kana, who had been enjoying the caress, was suddenly interrupted, and unhappily fire back at once, “I see that you are sitting on your laurel, Miss Kirisaki. Why don’t you use this time to review your modern Japanese lesson?”
“I’m resting, not idling! Don’t you know!” Kirisaki slammed her hand on the table.3 Kana has been ridiculing her for three days straight for failing her modern Japanese exam!
For the once American, the complicated composition of kanji looked as incomprehensible as chicken scratches. The fact that Kana seized this weakness and never let go irritate her even more.
“Never mind, I’m not in mood to argue with you.” Kirisaki picked up her bag and were intending of going home.
“Wait!”
Plop.
Kana took out a stack of A4 papers and slap it on Kirisaki’s head, “take these.”
“What are these?” Kirisaki took the papers even though she didn’t understand.
“Modern Japanese notes. Eru made it,” Kana said.
Kirisaki flipped through the A4 papers. They are a copy of modern Japanese notes. It was much more exhaustive than hers. Although Kana said that Eru made it, but Kirisaki could see clearly that there are two sets of handwriting on it. One of them was carefully and neatly written, and the other one was sloppy and illegible. The contrast is like day and night.
The sloppy handwriting were notes that would be regarded as common sense by the Japanese, or foundational knowledge, something that Japanese high schooler would have taken it to heart. It’s obvious that Kana were intentionally supplementing Eru’s notes. It was easy to understand.
Detailed supplementary notes for half a term’s notebook written in two to three days… it’s easy to imagine that Kana spent tremendous amount of energy. Kirisaki clasped on the warm papers. Her eyes were stingy, as if tears were about to flow out.
Kana waved, “that’s all, now, skedaddle!”
Chitoge walked away, choking in her tears.
Kirisaki’s villa were located on the outskirt, a little more remote than Chitanda’s house. The commute from home to school takes a little more than one hour. This was Kirisaki Chitoge’s own choice, it was to hide something, she is actually the eldest daughter of an American criminal gang, “Hive”.
It has been difficult to make friends under ordinary term. She didn’t know if anyone would be friends with her if they discover that her family is composed of criminal gang members.
Right now, an official of “Hive”, Claude, id drinking coffee with the bureau chief of Kamiyama city travel agency, Satou-san, at the villa. The gang have no shortage of safe houses, and they can erect one in any country of their choosing. Satou family have some influence in Kamiyama city’s political circles. It is not known why he was chosen by Hive to penetrate into Kamiyama city, for he is but a bureau chief of a travel agency.
Suddenly, the front door of the villa was kicked open, Chitoge huffingly walked in, threw her bag on the sofa, and yell at the direction of the school, “Chitanda Kana! Go to hell!”
Obviously both of them can be emotionally connected to each other, but Kana didn’t show any indication that she want to. Kirisaki have no idea why that girl was so hateful!
“Hey hey…” Claude coughed and remind her, “Miss, we have a guest right now.”
“Eh,” Chitoge moved a motion, and only noticed Satou then. Awkwardly, she said, “I’m sorry,” and then she took her bag and walked hurriedly to her room.
“I’m sorry for her discourtesy,” Claude told Satou.
“No no, don’t worry about it,” Satou waved his hands, and then he made a remark, “It seems that Chitanda Kana didn’t go easy on bullying Miss Kirisaki either…”
“Oh?” Claude took off his glasses, “Lately, little miss has mentioned that name. Satou-san, might you know who she is?”
“I don’t know her either,” although his head ache dully, but Satou denied, “but I hear that Chitanda Kana had quite the reputation in Kamiyama high school. I heard that she used an electric baton to send a student to the hospital. I’m afraid school life won’t be very pleasant for Miss Kirisaki when she encounters this kind of delinquency.4”
“Delinquency?” Claude’s eyes became bloodshot, “Which delinquent would dare to bully the eldest daughter of the Hive! Do they have a death wish?”
