For this follow-up experiment, I decided to synthesize a Blood Grail no larger than a candy drop. The tricky part lay in the transmutation circle, which required a combination of simplified formulas. But after observing the aether flow while drawing it the other day, I’d managed to identify areas where I could streamline and optimize the design.
Albion’s simplified formula system used archaic characters, but I came up with the idea of optimizing and further enhancing it by incorporating newtype characters that hadn’t existed in his time—creating an entirely new transmutation circle.
The circle was considerably more complex, but once I deciphered its structure, it wasn’t all that difficult for me. I added newtype characters with light-attribute amplification effects, allowing the circle to absorb aether efficiently from my blood and convert the monster’s blood into light-attribute aether.
Whether or not the simplified formula was functioning correctly could be confirmed on the spot. As seen in the last synthesis, my blood reacted to the transmutation circle with a golden glow—convenient confirmation, indeed.
“Woooow… You’re doing a newtype conversion here? Master, you are seriously insane… Wait—is this a one-shot freehand drawing!?”
“Yeah, pretty much. Hmm, is it going to be a pain to write up the report later without a copy?”
“Then I’ll record it with projection magic. We can copy it onto paper afterward, right?”
Melua quickly activated her projection spell, capturing the transmutation circle I had drawn. Thanks to her resourcefulness—and her excellent magical abilities—putting together the report afterward was going to go a lot more smoothly.
“It really feels like this simplified formula with the newtype characters is what makes the attribute no longer matter. Even without your blood, Master, it seems like you could still get pretty decent results.”
“Well, I’m not planning to do any comparisons anyway, and I doubt there are many people who’d want to make something like this over and over.”
“No way! Just watching is enough to make my head spin. A transmutation circle this intricate ought to be designated a national treasure or something~!”
It was a rather enjoyable task for me, but Melua shook her head vigorously in refusal.
“Have you always been like this, Master?”
“Like what?”
“Like… just casually coming up with ideas to completely rewrite the Blood Grail’s transmutation circle in one go—even though it’s so complicated no one’s ever dared modify it!”
Well, it’s not like I was doing this on a whim. The whole plan had already been carefully developed in my head. I suppose I’ve always liked things like quietly sketching simplified formulas and designing transmutation circles on my own—even back in my previous life. That probably had a big influence on how I work now.
“…Well, my mother was an alchemist, and I’d been interested in it since I was little, so I had the chance to try a lot of things.”
“And to be able to just whip up something like this—that’s genius!”
I had meant to keep it low-key, but Melua latched onto the topic with surprising enthusiasm.
“I mean, people used to call me a genius, but I’ve always known there’s always someone better out there. And you, Master… you’re like, not even in the same league. It’s not jealousy anymore—you’re just way up there in the clouds. Maybe you were even an alchemist in your previous life or something.”
“…That might be true.”
The Pure Eyes were only supposed to be able to perceive aether, but her remark hit so close to the mark it startled me. I gave a wry smile instead of denying it—there wasn’t much point in trying.
While we chatted, I finished drawing the transmutation circle. Setting down my transmutation brush, I straightened my posture.
“All that’s left is to channel aether into the transmutation circle above the alchemic solution, right?”
“That’s right.”
If this Blood Grail could produce a reasonably good result, it would likely be enough to wrap up the report without any issues.
“Then, Master, I’m counting on you!”
Melua clasped her hands together in an overly dramatic plea. I gave her a nod and held my hand over the transmutation circle.
“Activate formula.”
Reacting to my aether, the transmutation liquid floated up into the air and immediately solidified—forming a round, violet gemstone.
“Marvelous! Absolutely marvelous transmutation!”
The voice that rang out in applause belonged to none other than the Professor.
“I didn’t expect you to run the follow-up experiment this quickly.”
The Professor, visibly excited, strode over toward us in a rush.
“Professor…? What are you doing here?”
“Oh no! I totally forgot Estea asked me to do maintenance!”
Melua let out a cry of dismay beside me as I stood there in surprise.
