“Hey, Leafa. It looks like your Mecha Soldier manufacturing permit has been successfully approved.”
After leaving the student council room and heading to the hangar, the Professor greeted me with a cheerful smile.
“If you already knew, you could have just told me.”
“Oh, no, no. Procedures must be followed, you see. Pulling strings behind the scenes is important, but so is doing things by the book.”
Adjusting his glasses with a grin, the professor looked as if he couldn’t wait to see the Mecha Soldier being built. Isaac and Romeo were also waiting, and they smiled as I arrived.
“Still, I can’t believe you’re really going to build one…”
“Lady Leafa possesses the necessary knowledge and skill, forsooth. While waiting, I took the liberty of closely examining Arkecius, and I must say—it is truly a masterpiece, forsooth.”
I nodded at Romeo and Isaac’s words. Now that I had the permit, I wanted to start working on it immediately.
“I must say, I have never seen such a talented student when it comes to alchemy and magic tool manufacturing. Though your specialization differs, you and Melua each stand out in your own way.”
“Ohh! The rumored special-class alchemist!”
Isaac exclaimed, and Romeo nodded in understanding. As mecha enthusiasts, they had likely already examined Melua’s machine as well.
“…By the way, Leafa, is it true that Melua has become your apprentice? I heard she received the Ring of the Shimmering Starry Sky as proof. It was an exquisite piece.”
The Professor asked with an enchanted look on his face. He must have learned about it when Melua went to return the original to Ms. Matilda.
“…Professor. If you already know that much, there’s no need to ask, is there?”
“Haha, I suppose I dug a little too deep.”
Letting out a dry chuckle, the Professor scratched the back of his unkempt head.
“I find it very intriguing. Why would a student with such talent settle for a third-class certification?”
“The timing just hasn’t worked out for the qualification exams. I’ll take the next level eventually.”
In truth, I couldn’t reveal that I had the skills of a Grande, so I dodged the question with a vague response.
“I’m looking forward to it. By the way, Leafa, you’ve already decided on your theme for the project assignment due tomorrow, haven’t you?”
Ah, right. That was mentioned in today’s class. Based on the results of our initial magic tool crafting session, the Professor had decided to turn future lessons into project-based work, allowing each student to conduct research and development on a theme of their choosing.
“My theme is the effective deployment and development of Mecha Soldiers for the Zersteller.”
“Excellent. That means you can dedicate class time to Mecha Soldier manufacturing as well.”
“So that was an option!?”
“Professor, does that mean we can work in teams too!?”
Isaac and Romeo leaned forward eagerly at the professor’s approving response. He smiled knowingly, as if he had anticipated their reaction.
“Of course. In this case, as long as Leafa agrees…”
“May we join, Lady Leafa!?”
“Of course. Right now, I could use all the help I can get.”
For me, the more hands on deck, the better. Given the limitations of my body, building a Mecha Soldier on my own would be incredibly difficult.
“Thank you, Leafa!”
“I shall be whatever you need me to be! A Mecha Maniac who jumps not at this chance does not deserve the title, forsooth!”
Isaac was so excited that he was practically wagging his fox tail wildly.
“I’m counting on you two. I don’t know nearly as much about Mecha Soldiers as you do.”
With Isaac and Romeo onboard, the level of detail and expertise in our work would increase significantly. I planned to rely on them quite a bit.
“Leave it to us!”
“You can count on us, forsooth!”
Their enthusiastic replies were reassuring, and I couldn’t help but smile.
