When I glanced over at Alfe and Melua in between crafting, I noticed a large cylindrical glass container sitting on the workstation.
“Can you imagine this as an arena and control your aether at a miniature scale?”
Ah, so that’s what Melua meant by “practical training.” I hadn’t thought she’d start something like Ms. Matilda’s class right here in the atelier, but I had a feeling I understood what she was trying to do.
“Yeah. If I can control it, what should I do?”
“I want you to try the basics of Multi Vision.”
Multi Vision is a technique that involves activating two or more spells simultaneously. While the theory was well-established in magical studies, very few people could actually pull it off. That was because casting multiple spells at once required parallel processing of thoughts, cognitive multitasking, and an immense amount of aether to sustain the magic— not to mention the drastically increased magic power consumption.
In other words, without the imagination to manage the technique and the aether reserves to withstand the casting, a mage couldn’t even stand at the starting line. Still, it was an incredibly practical technique in real combat.
“Let’s start with something simple. Try casting water magic and ice magic at the same time.”
“Okay.”
Both were spells Alfe was already good at, but she had probably never used them simultaneously before. She nodded, placed her hand on the glass container, and focused on its center.
I found myself pausing my crafting, unintentionally caught up in watching her.
“Ah, Master, please keep crafting while you watch us~!”
Sensing my gaze, Melua conjured a water mirror right in front of my workstation. It reflected the cylindrical glass container on their workstation, giving me a clear view of their practice.
“It’s easier for you to craft if you can see what’s happening right in front of you, right? Better than sneaking glances.”
“Thanks, Melua.”
Being cared for so attentively like this might be one of the perks of being a master. Grateful for her thoughtfulness, I resumed crafting while keeping an eye on Alfe’s hands.
“Water, ice—”
Alfe’s gentle voice resonated as she began chanting the incantations for water and ice magic simultaneously. Responding to her words, water filled the glass container, and at the same time, countless sharp ice spears materialized within it.
“Oh, that’s amazing! I didn’t think you’d nail it on the first try. As expected of someone with a Pure Eye.”
Melua clapped her hands in applause, gazing at the swirling water and ice spears inside the glass container.
“Yeah. And it’s not just that you conjured the water— it’s swirling like a vortex. That level of detail is impressive. Your imagination isn’t just good; it’s better than I expected.”
“Thank you.”
It seemed like a decent success, and I could hear the tension in Alfe’s voice ease a little.
“But hey, if I asked you to do fire and wind next, or earth and lightning, could you pull it off right away?”
“Ah…”
Alfe hesitated at Melua’s question.
“That’s what I mean by ‘practical training.’ In a real fight, you don’t get a ‘please cast your spell now’ service break, right? We have to keep fighting the enemy while constantly casting multiple spells, adjusting to the flow of battle.”
It was the same when I had seen the Witch of Eternal Night fight in my past life. She overwhelmed the demon forces, simultaneously unleashing multiple spells through an almost inhuman level of parallel thought processing.
“In other words, even the time spent chanting is a luxury. To use magic in real combat, the key is to cast lower-tier spells without incantations while chanting mid-tier spells at the same time.”
Alfe tended to be meticulous with her fundamentals, but in real combat, she’d need to strip things down to the essentials.
“It doesn’t matter which element you use, but you should at least be able to cast simple ones without chanting.”
Melua made her request so casually, but that was no easy feat. Alfe silently nodded, her eyes fixed on the water vortex and ice spears she had created.
“And hey, since you’ve got a Pure Eye, you should stop hiding it. I get that the lens has high transparency, but the effect isn’t zero, you know?”
I hadn’t anticipated that the contact lens I made for Alfe would end up holding her back here. Thinking about it, maybe Alfe subtly refusing to let me remake the lenses was her way of preparing for this.
“I know who made it for you. But listen, having a Pure Eye is special, and I’ll never let anyone discriminate against you because of it.”
Melua had realized I was the one who made the lenses but deliberately chose not to say it outright. It was her way of showing that, as my apprentice, she had no intention of criticizing something her master created. Her consideration was so thorough that it made me feel deeply grateful.
“It’s a part of you, so you should embrace it and make the most of it. Otherwise, it’s just a waste, you know?”
At Melua’s cheerful suggestion, Alfe nodded and removed the contact lens, carefully wrapping it in a handkerchief. She then lifted her face, gently brushing aside the strands of soft lilac hair that fell over her eyes.
“See, Master? Alfe looks way better like this, right?”
I wholeheartedly agreed with Melua’s opinion. I’d always thought Alfe’s Pure Eye, shimmering like liquid gold, was breathtakingly beautiful.
“I’ve always loved you just the way you are. I guess it’s time to graduate from that contact lens.”
“Leafa…”
Alfe’s eyes welled up with tears at my words, spoken without hesitation. I almost teared up myself, but I somehow managed to hold it together1.
“…Hey, this is all sweet and heartwarming, but how’s my ring coming along, Master?”
Melua asked as she walked over to my workbench.
“Of course, it’s almost done. I just need to carve in the simplified formula, and it’ll be complete.”
“No way! You’re seriously finishing it in like, an hour? My master is way too amazing!”
It was thanks to my past life’s experience with mass production that making a single item didn’t require too much focus. That said, I wanted to be extra careful when engraving the simplified formula since I intended to tailor it to Melua’s needs— specifically, regulating the amount of aether her Pure Eyes perceived. Ideally, I should go back to my room and test the formula first, but I wasn’t sure if that was the best choice right now.
“Hey, Melua. I can make the same thing right away, but if you’d like, I could customize it just for y—”
“Yes, yes! Please, Master!”
Before I could even finish speaking, Melua grabbed my hand tightly and leaned in, pleading with me. It was amusing how she trusted me completely without needing any more explanation. That was just part of who she was, I supposed.
“Alright, I’ll take it back to the dorm and work on it. I should be able to give it to you tomorrow.”
“I’ll wait, I’ll wait! Ugh, Master, you’re the best!”
Melua bounced around with joy, thrilled at the idea of having something tailored specifically for her. It was a small gesture, but it reminded me a little of Alfe. Maybe their vivid imaginations went hand in hand with their strong emotional sensitivity.
“…Oh no, look at the time!”
Before we knew it, the sun had set, and the atelier was bathed in the glow of magic stone lamps.
“I did it again! I’m gonna be super late!”
“Senior, do you have plans?”
Seeing Melua suddenly panic, Alfe asked, her voice tinged with concern. Melua nodded, pacing back and forth in the atelier, mumbling to herself.
“Oh no, I haven’t finished cleaning up, and I still want to carefully check Master’s progress, but time—time is slipping away—!”
“You don’t need to rush, Melua.”
A cool, composed voice rang out, and Melua snapped her head up in surprise.
“Estea! I’m sooo sorry~☆”
“You’re always like this when you get absorbed in something.”
Standing in the atelier doorway was Estea, the student council president. Unlike her demeanor last time, she now wore a gentle expression as she spoke to Melua.
“You must be Leafa and Alfe from Class 1-F. Perfect timing.” Estea straightened her posture and bowed deeply, her smile unwavering. “I truly apologize for what happened the other day2.”
