Fortunately, all the materials needed for the ‘Bracelet of the Gentle Unicorn’ were available in Melua’s atelier.
I started by dissolving the ash tree sap in the alchemy cauldron, then added unicorn horn ground into a fine powder. Once the two ingredients fused together, I poured the alchemic solution into the bracelet mold Melua had been using.
“Would you mind if I shortened the process a little?”
“If that’ll get us a bracelet, go right ahead.”
With Melua’s permission, I decided to take a bit of a shortcut— I asked Alfe to use ice magic to cool the solution. It was a bit of an unorthodox approach, but it worked.
“Huh!? Are you seriously allowed to do that!?”
Normally, you’d let the mixture cool at room temperature, but I’d chosen to speed things up with magic. Melua’s shout of disbelief echoed through the room.
“Most of the material is tree sap. Rapid cooling won’t cause any issues.”
Come to think of it, back when I mass-produced these bracelets, I used this exact method for cooling. The ‘Bracelets of the Gentle Unicorn’ that had survived to the present day had likely gone through this same process. In a way, it meant I was following the exact steps I had taken in my previous life— maybe that made this the correct approach after all.
Memories from my past life surfaced vividly as I worked. But strangely, recalling these small, mundane details didn’t make me feel uncomfortable. If anything, it made me realize just how much I truly loved alchemy, given that I’d chosen to study and pursue it even in this life.
Thanks to Alfe’s help, the cooling time was drastically shortened, and I began piecing together the polished magic stones Melua had prepared, arranging them on the bracelet’s surface to form the image of a unicorn.
“Wait, hold on. The magic stone colors are completely different from the original.”
“Oh, that? The magic stones are just decorative. The true essence of the ‘Bracelet of the Gentle Unicorn’ lies in the simplified formula carved on the back.”
“You’ve gotta be kidding… I went through so much trouble trying to replicate those stones…”
Melua was completely captivated by how smoothly I worked. Judging by her expression, it seemed like her doubts that I was making things up had mostly faded.
I prepared the unicorn blood and began carving the purification formula onto the back of the bracelet using a chisel. Instead of using modern runes, I deliberately chose the older script I was more proficient with— I figured that would make it easier to convince Melua.
Sure enough, as Melua read the runes I had inscribed, she nodded in admiration. For the final step, I poured the unicorn blood over the carved runes and waited for it to dry.
“And with that, it’s complete.”
I placed the finished bracelet in front of Melua, who furrowed her brows suspiciously.
“This is… finished? I mean, you were super efficient, and everything you said checks out, but… still, it’s only been, like, an hour since you started!”
“Well, I did cut down on the time a bit.”
I shrugged, relieved that she hadn’t questioned just how unusually fast my technique had been for a first attempt.
After all, in my previous life, I had made the ‘Bracelet of the Gentle Unicorn’ to earn a living. It was something you could easily find in local accessory shops back then. Spending hours crafting something so simple would’ve been ridiculous, so I had relentlessly refined my process for maximum efficiency.
“In that case, I’m gonna test it out.”
“Go right ahead.”
Melua slipped the bracelet onto her wrist and channeled her aether into it.
“…Oh my gosh. My stomach’s been twisting in knots this whole time, but now I feel ridiculously refreshed. It’s working so well— I can literally feel it!”
Melua rubbed her abdomen, blinking in surprise.
“The bracelet’s purification power boosts the body’s natural healing ability. If it’s just a minor stomachache, you’ll feel better in no time.”
“This is insane! Are you, like, an alchemy god or something1!? Please, make me your apprentice!!”
Melua suddenly dropped to her knees and prostrated herself in front of me. Both Alfe and I exchanged stunned glances, caught completely off guard by her sudden outburst.
“…What should we do, Leafa?”
Alfe, still struggling to keep up with the situation, asked in a hesitant voice.
“I don’t mind teaching alchemy— but in exchange, I’d like you to teach Alfe magic.”
“That’s all you want!?”
Melua shot her head up, eyes wide with surprise.
“That was the reason we came here in the first place.” When I nodded, Melua jumped to her feet and clasped both my hand and Alfe’s with an enthusiastic grip.
“Alright, it’s a deal! Let’s work together, Great master Leafa and Alfe2!”
Good grief. We only came here to ask Melua to be Alfe’s magic instructor, and somehow, things had taken quite the unexpected turn.
