Opening the first page of this black notebook, I felt my hand trembling.

Holder: Chang Kai

Hallelujah

So, everything in the dream was real? Did I really not lose my little spinning top?

If I don’t turn a poor soul into a beautiful girl every month to change their fate, I myself will become the ultimate unlucky one.

Then where should I find this poor soul? After all, what degree of transformation can be called a change of fate?

“Meow, meow”

Just as I was sitting at my desk, banging my head on the table in distress, the orange cat… no… the orange pig, Tangerine, came to bother me again.

Meals were already there, so it’s probably to get me to clean the litter box?

So annoying, I really want to throw it out.

No, come to think of it, I’ve already thrown it out several times, but it always finds its way back.

What does this creature think of me as its owner? A walking feeder, a four-legged poop scooper?

“Meow, meow”

Seeing that I was ignoring it, it jumped onto my lap… damn, it’s so heavy. I thought cats were just fluffy…

When I glanced at the opened Bishoujo Notebook on the desk, an incredible idea began to form in my mind.

The lively energy of Chocola, the serene maturity of Vanilla… I want a catgirl1!

Why? I just want a catgirl!

I have the Bishoujo Notebook! And my orange pig is so ugly!

Is it strange that I simply want to turn it into a cute and obedient catgirl?

Not strange, right? After all, this is just an experiment to test if the notebook works on animals.

Yes, this is just an experiment, a necessary experiment to better complete the assessment indicators!

I pushed my square glasses, my eyes burned with the curiosity of a true researcher as the pencil in my hand landed on the notebook.

Third line, Tangerine!

“Meow meow·meow!!”

Tangerine immediately let out a heart-wrenching meow, its body bursting with bulging flesh, slowly transforming into human limbs… the scene was quite grotesque… and absolutely horrifying.

Oh crap, is this going to kill it?

Thinking about it, when a human turns into a beautiful girl, the amount of body mass doesn’t change much, but when a cat turns into a human, that’s a major expansion issue.

But if I erase Tangerine’s name now, would it stop the transformation, leaving it in this twisted flesh mode?

Damn, even the white holy light and little stars are weaker, and the process is way too slow.

The bulging flesh of Tangerine reminded me of the scene where Edward and Alphonse Elric tried to transmute their mother2.

Suddenly, the twisted creature named “Tangerine” on the ground leaped high, with its already formed human legs dropkicked heavily on my forehead.

Yes, my forehead, but I was standing! How high did it jump?

Thinking this, I was knocked unconscious by that kick.

I regret it. Although Tangerine is fat and ugly, I don’t want it to die a tragic death…

It was winter, two years ago, on a snowy morning.

Someone left a box of four little kittens at my doorstep. Although they were covered with a blanket, the temperature was not enough to keep them alive.

My dad and I brought them home and took great care of them, but only one survived.

The one that survived was Tangerine. My dad said its life was extended by its three siblings.

It wasn’t a particularly unique story.

Every winter, many cats freeze to death outside, but the loss of three tiny lives still made us sad.

That’s how Tangerine became part of our family.

As a kitten, Tangerine was very cute and well-behaved, bringing joy to our single-parent family. This joy lasted for about six months.

…Then it ballooned.

By the time my dad and I realized we needed to control its weight, this damn short-haired orange cat had already eaten itself into a pig, the kind that’s hopelessly fat and can’t be slimmed down.

Slap, slap, slap.

In my daze, I felt something hitting my face.

“Hey! Wake up!”

Slap, slap, slap.

Damn, these consecutive slaps were quite heavy, forcefully waking me up.

I don’t know when I ended up lying back on the bed, but a girl with long orange hair and upturned eyes was sitting on the edge of it.

She was wearing my T-shirt, and as if that wasn’t secure enough, she had thrown on a tracksuit jacket over it.

Her lower half was clad in my sports shorts, with a cat tail sticking out from the back, standing upright and alert.

This had to be Tangerine, right?

Too bad she didn’t have cat ears—only hair shaped like them.

“Hey, you’re finally awake! You scared the hell out of me!”

“Tangerine?” I asked tentatively.

“In the flesh. Who else?”

“Tangerine, you’re okay!”

Putting aside why she could talk, why was her speech so crude?

Just the fact that she—no, it—was still alive made me want to thank the merciful heavens.

Overwhelmed with the joy of having her back, I instinctively reached out to pat her head, but my arm was swatted away…

Probably because she held a grudge against me for carelessly turning her into a human.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t realize transforming an animal would be so painful.”

At a time like this, a proper apology is surely needed.

“That’s not the reason. If it meant becoming human, I can handle any pain. It’s just that I’ve always hated that head-patting crap!”

So the process was excruciating after all. Humans and animals are different… I acted too recklessly…

“Hah, are you feeling guilty and regretting for turning me into a human? Don’t flatter yourself! I’ve never felt better! If there’s anything to be unhappy about, it’s why the hell am I turned into a girl! I’m a tomcat, you know!”

As she said this, Tangerine reached up and squeezed her oppai.

Yeah, that careless, provocative gesture instantly charged my little Chang Kai’s NP gauge by about 40%.

So, just where did this cat come from?

Her movements were rough, her tone was crude—where was the cute, well-behaved cat girl I was promised?

“Because this notebook of mine was originally meant to turn ‘humans’ into ‘bishoujo’… According to the divine being, anyone whose name is written in this notebook will become a beautiful girl and find happiness.”

“Ah, but I was not human, so that’s why the transformation was so painful and slow, right?”

When Tangerine mentioned how painful it was, my conscience was struck with guilt again.

I had written her name down because I disliked her—how ugly of me.

Heart aching, I held onto the young girl’s shoulders, looking directly into her purple eyes.

“Tangerine, I really need to apologize to you about this matter—”

“I SAID there’s no need to apolo—”

“Just hear me out! The truth is, I wrote your name down because I hated how fat and ugly you were, and you were especially annoying!”

“……I know, or rather, I realized it after I became human.”

As both of us calmed down, Tangerine changed her tone, now carrying warmth.

“Listen up, Chang Kai! Whether it was as a cat, or as… this girl… girl’s form now… you’ve already given me two chances at a new life. Otherwise, before I even entered this home as ‘Tangerine’, I would have already frozen to death in the heavy snow.

So, no matter what happens, you and your dad should never apologize to me, understand? —Ah, though I actually almost died to the pain, damn it.”

Is that so? After becoming human, both her intelligence and emotions have evolved, she’s even more sensible than I imagined.

This is another kind of being well-behaved, isn’t it… but hearing you say this, doesn’t it just make me feel even more guilty?

“I’ve decided, I will never write any animal’s name in this notebook again!”

“But I think, for animals, being able to become human is a good thing, though.”

“It’s only a good thing in the end because you succeeded… I’ll discuss it with Dad when he gets back… and see if we can get you an official ID registered…”

“If you don’t mind, um, how about being my little sister?” my face flushed beet red when I said ‘little sister’.

“Ha, wouldn’t that mean I have to call you Onii-chan then? O~nii~chan~?”

A tomcat who used to be a nuisance has now turned into a beautiful girl—so why did she accept the “little sister” role so quickly?

Come to think of it, does Tangerine count as someone who had their fate changed?

Even if her fate did change, does it still count if she’s not human?

Well, anyway, I’ll mark Tangerine’s name with a marker later.

“Uncle has gynophobia, right? After turning into a human, I can now understand things I couldn’t before. Uncle really can’t handle women, can he? Is it okay for me to be like this now?”

The “uncle” Tangerine is referring to is, of course, my dad.

After my mom gave birth to me, she vanished without a trace.

Deeply hurt by being abandoned, my dad developed a psychological condition where ‘his mind goes blank, and he can’t move whenever he stands in front of a woman.’

He can’t even bear to look at his own son without glasses—apparently, I look a lot like my mom.

“I actually think this is an opportunity to help him heal. If he takes it slow, he might be able to overcome his trauma.”

He can’t spend his whole life living in the shadow of being abandoned by my mom.

If necessary, we might even have to use some stronger measures.

Thinking this, I stared down at the Bishoujo Notebook in my hand.

MJ:Translating this chapter was painstakingly hard.
Tangerine uses a masculine assertive pronoun 老子 for portions of the chapter, and no suitable english substitute could be used for it after research.
I decided to keep the pronoun of Tangerine as I/me and change the tone by rewriting some of the sentences to fit the original feeling.
