“Cough, cough…” Landon coughed up blood, along with fragments of his internal organs. He lay limp amid the rubble, struggling to breathe. Every breath rasped like air being forced through a broken bellows.
Excruciating pain filled every part of his body, as though every bone from head to toe had been shattered. He was completely unable to move. With his strength depleted, the phantom wolf disappeared, and the giant dragon’s black silhouette no longer had any reason to remain.
The sky was thus left completely unobstructed, and sunlight streamed down. Yet Landon could feel no warmth. He desperately widened his eyes, trying to see what was happening.
But his vision had already blurred. All he could see was the girl standing on top of him, her figure seemingly shrouded in a halo of sacred light. Yet to Landon, the girl was no angel. She was the Grim Reaper.
‘—But I… don’t want to die.’
Boundless regret welled up in Landon’s heart. After years of painstaking planning, he had finally achieved results. He had finally stepped into the Saint realm he had yearned for all this time. From now on, his life should have been nothing but smooth sailing. How could he die at a time like this?
‘—Anyone… please, save me…’
‘—I don’t want to die.’
It seemed that the heavens had truly heard his prayers. Suddenly, a drop of warm liquid dripped between his dry, cracked lips. It was like heavenly nectar. Boundless vitality surged violently into his body along with that single drop of liquid.
It was like a riverbed that had long since dried up suddenly being inundated by a torrential mountain flood after a downpour. A terrifying force filled every inch of his body, brutally restoring his injuries.
The process was agonizing. Yet Landon was overjoyed. Because as long as he was alive, that was all that mattered. As long as he lived… there was still hope for everything. Compared to being alive, this little bit of pain was nothing…
“Looks like you’ve finally recovered your spirit.” A cool, detached voice reached Landon’s ears.
Landon slowly shifted his gaze. His vision had recovered, and his eyes met those of the girl standing atop him. The girl wore a smile, but there was no trace of a smile in her eyes. Only a darkness that made him tremble churned endlessly within them.
Looking into those eyes, Landon immediately began to doubt the thought he had just had. Being alive… Was it really a good thing?
“My blood has only just warmed up. Can you feel it?” Lilith asked with a soft laugh.
“But you should feel honored, because not everyone is qualified to receive the baptism of dragon blood.”
Dragon blood? Only then did Landon realize where the nectar that had restored his injuries had come from. It had come from the girl’s fair wrist. There was an inconspicuous wound there, which was healing at a visible rate.
The nectar had come from there. It was blood. The girl’s blood. It was this girl who had pulled him back from the brink of death.
Looking at that wound, Landon immediately thought of Liana. His daughter. He had once personally cut open her wrist. More than once. Had the girl done this deliberately as well? Was she trying to remind me of something?
The moment he thought of this, Landon felt a bone-deep chill run through his entire body. The cold was so intense that it even overwhelmed the excruciating pain of his bones being forced back into place.
“Then… let’s begin the second round.” Lilith suddenly sat down on top of Landon. The girl sitting astride the waist of a grown man was, no matter how one looked at it, rather suggestive. But before Landon had time to say anything—or, rather, before he could even react—he saw a petite fist rapidly growing larger in his field of vision.
Lilith drove her fist straight into Landon’s face. His cheek suddenly warped out of shape, and Landon could feel at least half of his teeth being knocked loose by that single punch.
It hurts! Perhaps it was just Landon’s imagination, but after receiving the restorative effects of that drop of blood, his body seemed to have become even more sensitive. In other words, it hurt even more!
After throwing that punch, Lilith paused for a moment. Landon clearly felt the power within his body taking effect, and his injuries began to heal. But the process was anything but pleasant. No, it was more painful than before.
His bones needed to be returned to their proper positions, but his fascia was obstructing them, so the only way to restore them was to tear through the fascia. His flesh needed to grow back, but the mangled, rotting flesh had not fallen away, so it could only heal together with the ruined flesh.
His fallen teeth needed to grow back, but his gums had already been twisted into strange shapes, so the new teeth could only emerge from equally strange positions.
“It hurts… It hurts so much…” These chaotic and violent processes inflicted endless pain upon him. Yet his consciousness remained exceptionally clear, to the point that he could not even faint.
Finally, as his wounds *healed*, the pain seemed to gradually subside. But Lilith had already prepared another punch, and it came down mercilessly. The torment continued.
At this moment, Landon finally understood that the drop of blood was not some gift of vitality that could bring life to a dying person. It was the devil’s blood, a means the girl had deliberately used to subject him to endless torment!
If he did not stop her, she really might torture him forever.
“Ugh… please… don’t…” After enduring an unknown number of cycles of such agony, Landon finally found a brief opportunity to catch his breath.
By then, his face had already become a grotesque mass covered in teeth and deformed flesh. Even Lilith found the sight somewhat disgusting and had nearly been unable to bring herself to strike him again. That was the only reason she had given him a moment to breathe.
“Please… spare me…” From within the deformed mass of flesh, the one eye that could still vaguely retain its original appearance no longer held any of his former arrogance or haughtiness. There was only fear and humility.
“Spare you? Why should I spare you?” Lilith raised an eyebrow and sneered. “I’m having such a great time beating you up right now. Give me one good reason to spare you.”
“I… I’m Liana’s father.” After thinking it over, that was the only reason Landon could come up with. “I’m her only family. You care about her so much, don’t you? If I become like this, she’ll be heartbroken too. Would you really be willing to see her hurt?”
“Heh. After doing all those things, you actually still have the nerve to call yourself her only family.” Lilith tilted her head and carefully examined Landon’s grotesque face, speaking with genuine puzzlement. “Is your skin really that thick, or have I simply not beaten you hard enough?”
“I did it for the Ye family. Everything I did was for the Ye family—for the Ye family to prosper and flourish, for the Ye family to no longer be confined to this tiny Maplefall Town. I did all of this because I’m the head of the Ye family. Everything I do is for the Ye family. Liana will understand my painstaking efforts.”
“For the Ye family? That’s really laughable.” Lilith suddenly leaned closer and looked Landon straight in the eyes. “You knew about her constitution, didn’t you?”
“…I did. But so what?”
“Then you should also have known that with her talent, becoming a Saint was only a matter of time.”
“But…”
“If you truly wanted the Ye family to produce a Saint, or for it to prosper and flourish, then all you needed to do was be a real father. No, you didn’t even need to be a father, you only needed to be a human being, and you could have accomplished it with ease.
“Yet you chose to sacrifice your own wife. And now you’re trying to use your own daughter as well. You even turned your own clansmen into demons. Let me guess…the success rate of that method for transforming humans into demons wasn’t actually very high, was it?”
“……”
“Hehe. Nothing to say? Look at yourself, Landon. You have absolutely no right to put the words ‘for someone else’ in your mouth. You’re nothing more than a complete beast and a scumbag.”
