Landon wiped the blood from his hands.
The confrontation began once more. The pressure weighing on Liana’s heart grew increasingly heavy. Even though they were both ninth-stage powerhouses, she had only just entered stage 9. How could she possibly compare with Landon, a peak powerhouse who had remained at this realm for more than a decade?
To make matters worse, she had lost far too much blood earlier and was still suffering from blood loss. That single finger strike from Landon had already inflicted a serious injury on her.
“Have you already exhausted all your tricks?” Landon stepped forward. Each step seemed to land directly upon Liana’s heart.
He looked at Liana, carefully studying the panic and fear on her face. Then, as though he had suddenly remembered something, he smiled and said, “Ending things like this would be far too boring. Out of kindness, I’ll tell you something I’m sure you’ll be interested in.”
“Something you’re going to tell me?”
“That’s right. It’s about that little girl you’ve always cared about.”
“Mountain Ghost?” Liana’s pupils abruptly contracted, and she demanded sternly, “Didn’t you promise me that you wouldn’t hurt Mountain Ghost?”
“Heh, of course I keep my word, so I wasn’t the one who did anything to her.”
Landon’s tone remained indifferent, as though he were merely commenting on some trivial matter, such as whether it would rain tomorrow. “I merely had someone deliver her before the Demon Emperor. As for how Her Majesty, who has been imprisoned for a thousand years, will deal with her, I have no idea. Still, I’m sure your friend will feel extremely honored to receive the Demon Emperor’s favor.”
“You b̲a̲s̲t̲a̲r̲d̲!” Liana’s eyes instantly turned bloodshot as she struck her palm toward Landon.
The fierce palm wind scattered the nauseating stench of blood filling the room, but it could not dispel the disgust lingering in Liana’s heart. As though he had anticipated her attack, Landon met her palm with his own.
Thunder clashed, the deafening impact reverberating through the room. Landon was forced back two steps, yet not a speck of dust had touched him. Liana, however, was sent flying once more.
“As my daughter, how can you call your own father a beast?” Landon smiled gently. “It seems you really do care about that little girl. Just a few words were enough to throw your heart into such turmoil.”
Landon chased after her. Liana crashed through several more walls before finally reaching the open street outside. Her blood surged backward, aggravating her injuries and causing her to cough up several more mouthfuls of blood.
She struggled to her feet, only for a large hand to reach out at that moment and seize her slender neck. It lifted her off the ground as her legs kicked weakly in midair.
Landon tilted his head and once again scrutinized his daughter carefully. “Come to think of it, I never really took a proper look at you. In the blink of an eye, you’ve already grown this much. It’s quite something.”
“I… never… realized… that you… were this kind of person…” Liana grabbed the iron-clamp-like hand around her neck, her fingers turning white from the force she exerted.
“You still haven’t given up?” Landon raised an eyebrow, somewhat surprised. “I’m not actually going to kill you. I only want your blood. So why are you fighting so desperately?”
“…Because… of justice.”
“Hahahaha! Justice? That’s the funniest joke I’ve heard all day.” Landon laughed wildly, as though he were looking at a child who had just said something utterly absurd. “But unfortunately, there is no justice in this world. There is only the survival of the fittest.”
The big fish ate the small fish, and the small fish ate the shrimp. That was the unchanging truth of this world. It was the same for the Ye family. If they did not seek an even greater breakthrough, then sooner or later, they would be swept into the dustbin of history.
“Then… because… I believe… you’ll definitely lose.”
“I’ll lose?” Landon found it even more amusing. “Just look around you. The altar has already been established, the blood has already filled it, and the Immortal Cloud Pavilion’s exalted immortal has also been held back. Everything is ready. All that’s missing is your blood as the key, and you’re in my hands right now. So tell me, how could I possibly lose?”
“……” Liana fell silent. Because she did not know how Landon could possibly lose, either. Liana truly had a premonition that Landon would lose, but she could not explain where that feeling came from.
Perhaps it was simply an unreliable premonition. Perhaps, as Landon had said, given the current situation, even if a pig were in his position, it would be impossible for him to lose.
“You’d better not celebrate too soon. Even if you really obtain her blood, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be able to break the seal.” A cold, clear voice rang out. At the same time, a pink wave of light appeared.
The wave of light pierced through the darkness. Landon tilted his head back to evade it, but the beam still grazed his cheek. Unfortunately, the wave of light was too weak to inflict any real damage. It merely caused him to instinctively release his grip, letting go of Liana.
Following the voice, Liana coughed twice before struggling to turn her head. She discovered that it was Lauren. One hand covered her bleeding abdomen while the other braced against a hole in the wall. The pain coursing through her caused her cheek to twitch from time to time, yet she continued to glare fiercely at Landon, flames burning in her eyes without the slightest trace of fear.
“How unexpected. I thought you’d take the opportunity to run away.” Landon covered his cheek, revealing a rare expression of astonishment for the first time. “After provoking me again and again, are you really not afraid of death?”
“Death? Heh. I won’t die before I see you go to hell with my own eyes.” Lauren struggled to curl the corners of her lips into a mocking smile. Yet anyone could tell that she was merely fighting with her last remaining strength.
“Heh, I see. Now I understand.” Landon was not angered by Lauren’s mockery. Instead, he earnestly asked as though he were an ignorant child seeking knowledge, “Then tell me, what exactly is the reason you believe I won’t succeed?”
“Ha, don’t you know? The head of the Gongsun family has already gone to arrange for the Stabilizing Stones to be placed. With the Stabilizing Stones in place, the seal will be as secure as a rock.” Lauren explained.
Upon hearing this, Landon stared blankly at her. It was as though he could not understand what she had just said. After a long while, he finally came to his senses. Yet instead of showing the panic Lauren had expected, he threw his head back and burst into laughter. “I see. I see. So that’s where your confidence comes from.”
“What’s so funny?” Lauren gritted her teeth. “As long as the Demon Emperor cannot be released, your plan is doomed to fail. And when that happens, the only thing waiting for you will be death.”
“Indeed, indeed. The key to this plan is whether the Demon Emperor can be released. If Her Majesty cannot be successfully freed, then everything we’ve done will have been for nothing. And those Stabilizing Stones can indeed reinforce the seal. With them in place, perhaps I really wouldn’t be able to create an opening large enough to release Her Majesty. But, ah, but! Is there one thing you haven’t considered?”
Looking at Lauren, Landon laughed so hard that tears were nearly streaming from his eyes. He shook his head from side to side like a clown who had just successfully pulled off a prank. “Will Gavin really help you?”
