Following a string of rejections to all the invitations she received, Mira reached the end of the street, and the entrance to the red-light district.
“Now this is an imposing gate…”
A clear border delineated where the regular city ended and the red-light district started, as a firm and tall wall stood in between.
Despite that, entering was not a complicated process.
A tower gate stood right at the end of the street, two stories high, almost like the entrance to some important shrine.
But its design was more western, so it also looked like the entrance to a castle.
It was open wide, and there was not even a guard there, allowing anyone to enter and leave as they pleased. The towering construction was mostly there to emphasize how special the areas behind it were.
“Alright, time to get there myself.”
A short distance ahead of Mira was a man, awestruck by the gate, and after a deep breath he firmly stepped forward.
He was full of courage and determination, like he was about to embark on a lifelong battle, but his gait was swift and excited, revealing his hedonist nature.
The red-light district was truly a wondrous place.
As Mira’s feet crossed the threshold, her whole body was rattled by a strange sensation. Whether it was just in her mind, or something in that place actually had such an effect, to her it was a clear almost physical distinction.
(Somehow…it’s way different to what I had in mind.)
The red-light district was the peak of carnal pleasure, a place overflowing with alcohol, men, and women. Mira had pictured it as a gaudy and alluring place, with bright signs everywhere.
She was therefore shocked to find that reality was nothing like what she had imagined, with the area instead resembling the old town of a city.
There was not even a hint of the night city life she had expected. Instead, the place had an almost refined atmosphere.
Most of the buildings were built in elegant white stone, kept in perfect shape, resembling a neighborhood for nobles.
But while there were no extravagant decorations, it was also not plain or simple.
(This is a really fancy place.)
That scenery made her question for a second whether she was in the right location, but a quick look around was enough to prove that she was indeed in the red-light district.
There were groups of beautiful women along the street, ready to snatch any men passing by at a moment’s notice.
“Time to get to work, Wooftson. It gets serious now.”
“Woof!”
After looking around in a daze, Mira reaffirmed her hold on Wooftson and headed deeper into the red-light district.
Amongst all the fancy and elegant buildings, there was also one particular building in the center that stood out.
A castle. Not the biggest one, but still magnificent enough to house a king.
Mira did not know what place that was, what they did or offered there, all she knew was that it also resembled the kind of place some villain would choose. So she decided to check that place out first.
She was certain that if she made a full circuit around the castle, Wooftson would pick up August’s scent.
(And they’re all breathtaking beauties…I expected no less…)
While Wooftson’s nose did all the heavy lifting, Mira distracted herself…or rather, investigated the surroundings attentively.
All the women she could see were on a whole different level of beauty, they were truly the highest level of the highest level.
She also saw all the men being strung along by said women, following them into the establishments like they were about to face their final fate, and exiting like they had experienced utter bliss.
And not a single one of them showed any regret.
As long as they appeared to be happy, Mira silently cheered them on in following their dreams, and she moved along.
“Hello there, young lady.” Then someone spoke to her.
She turned around and was greeted by a man wearing a stylish coat, a gentle smile on his face. His whole demeanor seemed almost like that of a noble.
He even knew how to keep enough distance to not appear intimidating, a true gentleman through and through.
“Hm? Do you need something from me?”
Despite his impeccable manners, Mira could not remember ever seeing him before, or could see why he would speak to her, so she gave a short reply.
The gentleman took that as Mira being apprehensive of him, so he started, “Oh, I’m sorry for calling out to you so suddenly,” apologizing for it before continuing.
“I’ve frequented these establishments for a long time now, but I believe this is my first time seeing you, so I just had to talk to you. And I have to ask, which Amusement House do you work at? I hadn’t heard of any hiring an Evening Lady like you, but I have to admit that I’m completely smitten. There’s nothing I’d love more than to go spend a night with you.”
The terms he used were specific to the red-light district, and from the fluidity of his words, he was clearly a regular customer there. He also kept staring at Mira’s body as he spoke.
“Ahh, could you be from Miracle Heaven? That new place that appeared out of nowhere like a shooting star! I still haven’t gotten to meet all their Evening Ladies, given how new they are. I can’t believe I somehow missed someone as breathtaking as yourself, but I’ve seen the error of my ways. I can’t think of any other explanation!”
To sum up the gentlemen’s words, he seemed to be well acquainted with all the women in the red-light district.
Only Miracle Heaven was a place too new for him to know well yet, so he assumed that Mira also had to be one of their workers.
“Ahh… Err, I’m sorry. I just happened to end up here for various reasons, I don’t work around here.”
Obviously she could not reveal that she was looking for August, but she also could not think of a good excuse to explain her presence there, so she just gave a vague reply.
