That night after Setsuna gathered information…

“…It would seem thine time to log in was later than usual tonight.”

Crim, sitting on the outer rampart, noticed a figure approaching from the city…a young man clad in white robes and knight armor, like some paladin, who she greeted while waving her hand.

“…And how come you’re here, Scarlet Demon Lord?”

After a moment of shock, he…the leader of this Union, Theodolite, quickly regained his composure, pressing fingers to his temples like he was enduring a headache and scowling with disgust.
Overall, his body language seemed to scream *”Why is this damn loli Demon Lord all on her own in enemy territory, acting so carefree even though the location itself harms her?”*

“So, what is it you need that you decided to ambush me here of all places?”
“Yes, well, anticipating the opening of the old Imperial Capital, I found it necessary to formalize a truce between us.”

Crim spoke without restraint, and he narrowed his eyes before replying.

“…Is there a reason why I should accept that?”
“Plenty, isn’t there?”
“…”

Crim’s vague words were enough to break Theodolite’s stern attitude. Seeing that, Crim raised her index finger and continued.

“First, it’s obvious that in thine current state, thou hast no chance of winning against us.”
“…”

Theodolite managed to stop himself from grumbling, only staring intently at Crim. That alone was proof that she was correct in her assessment.

Maybe in the Holy Kingdom’s beginnings it was different…but after their first battle, and after gaining a positive view of the inhabitants of the Lua Cheia United Kingdoms, coupled with the sheer power boost from Crim’s species evolution, no one had a chance of winning against them.
On the other hand, it was difficult to just stand back so soon after declaring war. The best Theodolite could do was maintain a stalemate for long enough before he had enough troops… Setsuna had discovered that much throughout the day.

Theodolie knew that better than no one, and when Crim was satisfied with his reaction, she raised her second finger, counting to two.

“And second. After all those efforts to whitewash thine reputation and image, thou can’t afford to use cruel or underhanded tactics anymore. One wrong step, and everyone will turn against thee.”
“…Why do you think that?”
“Because I also have to worry about such things. My people placed their trust in me, believing that I’ll do my utmost to preserve their way of living.”

He had called out those in power before him, condemning their decisions and orders, rising to his current position thanks to others who shared his views. Now he had no choice but to stick to those ideals as a just and virtuous king.
The moment he turned his back even if just a little to those morals, his reputation would crumble. As extreme or unfair as that might be, any wicked deed would be irredeemable for those with honor.
Crim chuckled a bit, being in a not too dissimilar situation, but Theodolite just clicked his tongue and looked away.
Usually his manners were clean and amiable, now he was curt and ill behaved…but somehow that felt more genuine than his usual King Theodolite act, and Crim felt her opinion of him improve drastically that way.

…But that was not why she was there.
And the time to chit chat would soon be cut short.

“…Regardless, something else has taken the main stage today.”
“…Huh, so they decided to act faster than I thought.”

Both of them faced a certain direction, sensing the arrival of someone else.
Down the stairs which Theodolite had used to get up to the outer rampart from the city…stood three white figures.
They wore robes of a light gray color, almost white, which covered them from the tip of their heads down to their entire bodies. Their faces were concealed with white featureless masks, and down their loose sleeves sharp blades glimmered against the light… Jamadhars, short blades that excelled at stabbing attacks.

*The Yalcha higherups have designated King Theodolite as their biggest threat, and the churches across the continent have gathered their troops to get rid of him.*

It was not too long since Crim received that notice from Setsuna, and surely enough, their assassins were already on the move.

“The church’s secret assassin unit… I’m so tired of having to deal with these fanatics. Oh, I guess that’s why they’re after me?”

Theodolite grumbled at their sight.
A palpable murderous intent could be felt from those NPC human-type enemies. They were clearly highly experienced.
And it was also clear that they were here to assassinate Theodolite.
…Whenever a land was taken over by force, if the inhabitants revolted and managed to kill the new leader, they would regain their independence.
In other words, if King Theodolite lost his life during this event, he would lose his claim to the throne.

“…You know, I actually thought you were here to take advantage of this situation to get rid of me, Scarlet Demon Lord.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. That’s neither fun nor virtuous, I would never do such a thing.”
“…Heh.”

At least this time he seemed to believe her. Instead of being wary of her, he focused entirely on the assassins.

“Just one question, Theodolite. Need some help?”
“No.”

Soon players of the Holy Kingdom would notice the situation and come rushing in, until then, Theodolite had to survive on his own.
Hence why Crim offered her help…only to be flat out rejected, his face twisted with disgust as he replied.

“I’m the king of the Holy Kingdom…I’d never ask for help from a Demon Lord, let alone one who’s so unsteady on her feet. Just go hide somewhere.”
“Hmm…but I can always choose to fight in self defense. And I happen to have this pesky habit of rushing in to help if I see someone in trouble, oh whatever shall I do?”
“Tsk, do whatever you want. I don’t care what happens to you.”

He was clearly not amused by Crim’s response as he shouted without turning back, unsheathing his word to face the enemies…and Crim jumped down the rampart, pushing her heavily debuffed body to hide in the shadows.

“Now then…I did call for some *backup*, but who’s to say they’ll get here on time. I guess I’ll just have to hold out while I can.”

The clang of metal striking metal rang from above the rampart, the fight had started.
She registered those sounds in the back of her mind as she mumbled to herself, focusing on counting the enemies sneaking in the surroundings.

*Couple the biggest religion of the continent with their head temple, and you get a nice little army stashed away.*

Seeing that they were surrounded by a large number of enemies…Crim manifested a black dagger…and charged at the closest enemy, a man clad in white robes kneeling with a charged crossbow…
