Dawn broke on the second day of their stay at the Tone Shrine.
The group would spend the entire day taking a sort of training course, learning and practicing everything they needed to know for the next day.

The main duty for Kou and the other helping shrine maidens was mainly to man the Amulet Office, handing out charms, amulets, and talismans, essentially being salesgirls, though they could never call them sales. Just like with everything else, they had to be very watchful of their language.
The tithe amounts (income of the shrine for its operating costs) for the charms and other items were historically memorized and calculated mentally, but luckily there were NLDs now.
No one would notice if the shrine maidens used a private window with all the prices listed to cheat, so they were free to do so if they wanted.
Kou did not mind memorizing such things, but Hijiri and Kasumi looked like they had been rescued from the maws of hell when they heard that, making Kou, Miyuki and Rouge grimace a little.
That was the only easy part. They still needed to learn the proper mannerisms and way to speak as a shrine maiden. The entire afternoon was spent practicing and getting tested on that.
For instance, they could not greet worshipping visitors with “Welcome,” but had to say “Happy New Year!” or “Happy Holidays.”
When giving out the prices, they had to say “Please donate a tithe of this many yen.”
There were also unique parting words when the visitors left, like “Thank you for your faithful visit.”
Other than that, they also had to watch for their mannerisms, like when handing out the various charms, they had to hold it with their right hand, and elegantly support it with their left hand.
There were a lot of rules they had to learn, different from how they were used to act, so they spent the whole day practicing without end, constantly referencing Kikyo and Hinagiku’s example.
Once they more or less had the hang of it, they moved on to learn how to properly wear their shrine maiden uniforms, and how to layer the robes properly.
While such outfits were really easy on the eyes of visitors, putting them on was a chore in itself. Those clothes were also considered sacred and had to be treated with reverence, so they also had to get used to not make any crude movements with them.
Even their hair had to be tied behind the head with a decorative string made of twisted paper…and for girls with short hair, they also had plenty of wigs. Though all of them were black.
Luckily for Kou and Hijiri, the two with other hair colors, their hair was long enough to not need any extensions, so they let out sighs of relief.
…And all the older shrine maidens there were constantly staring at Kou’s pure white hair, so realizing she had no option, she gave them permission and they instantly began touching it all over. It was not the first or second time that happened, so by now Kou was used to that treatment.

The only male of the group, Subaru, was obviously assigned a different role. He would mainly be in charge of passing messages around or packages from the shrine office to the other buildings, cleaning the main shrine grounds, managing the parking area, and other odd jobs.
Overall it would be physically demanding work, and he already looked like his soul was leaving his body, but Kou pretended not to notice.

And so their second day at the Tone Shrine went by in the blink of an eye, amidst training and drills.

“I’m so glad you’re all so smart and quick on your feet.”

After a whole day of harsh and intensive teaching, they were shocked to hear Kikyo praise them like that, so Kou and the rest blushed a bit… and that also meant that everything had gone well.
Then for dinner they joined the other shrine maidens to boost their morale, sharing a simple but nutritious and delectable meal together…and then…

“Hahh…I’m beat.”
“I was sitting studying the whole day, my body feels so stiff…”

Kou and Hijiri went to share a warm and relaxing bath together, washing away all the exhaustion built up through the day.

…They were in the large bathroom inside the lodging building.
There was enough space there for the rest of the group to enter and stretch their legs out as well, so Kasumi and Miyuki were soon in a similar position.

“Ahh… Wait, Kou, at what time do we start tomorrow?”
“Umm… I think we need to be done with the purification ritual by eight in the morning, so we should try to sleep early tonight.”

Glancing through her sleepy eyes, Hijiri suddenly asked that, and Kou, who was just as drowsy, somehow managed to wring out her memories for their upcoming schedule.
It would be New Year’s Eve, the busiest day, and they had signed up to help out during the night shift as well, so she decided to advise everyone to rest as much as possible, since they would have a long day of work.

The purification ritual involved cleansing one’s body in warm water, and changing into clean underwear…and it could become a more involved process for true Shinto believers, but in the case of part time helpers it was essentially just a bath.
It was important for shrine maidens to keep their bodies pure, so taking proper baths was also one of their important duties they could not neglect.

“Considering we also have to get breakfast, we’ll have to get up around six…urghhh.”
“Ahahah…good luck with all that, I’m sure you’ll do great.”

Kasumi was clearly not looking forward to the next day, and Miyuki, who was still in middle school and was spared from getting up so early, tried to encourage Kasumi.

Soon their bath was over and everyone headed to their beds, leading to their second calm and quiet night there…just hours before New Year’s Eve, and Kou’s group’s first day as novice shrine maidens.
