At the outermost edge of the spiderweb-shaped magic circle, Seiwashi stood directly behind Morris. Nosori stood to his left, and Joseline to his right.
“Let’s do this! Everyone’s ready, right?!”
“Hm. No problem. The three of us will handle the mana control. Morris, you only need to focus on activating the spell.”
“Awa… awawawa…!”
“Hyohyohyo! No need for any of your ridiculous jokes, Morris. Just get on with it! Ah, although perhaps the senility has already begun?”
“Shut up, Nosori!”
Morris gripped the handle of the shovel embedded in the ground, the device known as the Earth Knocker, and poured mana into it. “Here we gooooo! This is the roooooar of the eaaaaaaarth!!”
At that instant, the ground beneath the three supporting scholars began to glow. Light flowed through the magical formation and converged upon Morris at its center.
“Hm. The mechanism itself is quite simple,” Seiwashi explained calmly. “By intentionally creating a low-pressure mana zone within Iroshio’s high-pressure mana currents, mana naturally flows into the void. We merely shape the path of that flow with our own mana.” His expression remained composed. “However, maintaining that path requires concentration. If you lose focus, your mana reserves will be drained almost instantly. So one needs to be cautious.”
“Awaaa! Awawawawaaaa!”
“Hm. The mana pressure is even higher than anticipated. We need to regulate the mana channels and suppress the flow velocity. If it exceeds a certain threshold, turbulence forms and the losses become significant.”
“Fwaaahhh! Fuhiiiii! M-My blood vessels are gonna burst!”
“Hyohyohyohyo! This feels wonderful! My shoulders are getting lighter by the second!”
“M-My brain! My brain’s blood vessels are gonna burst! They’re gonna burst! A-And my nose! My nose is gonna… My blood…”
“Hyooohhh! This girl didn’t get a nosebleed! She blasted out a massive stream of snot! Her face has become impossible to look at. Pitiful. Truly pitiful.”
“Thad’s meeeean! Sniff. You don’t really think I’m pitiful! snffft Not at all!”
“That’s disgusting! Blow your nose, girl! Blow your nose!”
“Uuuuuhhh… sniff… I’ll never be able to get married now…”
“…You were still planning on getting married?”
“Hmm. A surprisingly bold confession.”
“You’re all horrible! Absolutely horrible!”
“Whohohohoooo! It’s coming! It’s coming! IT’S COMING! THIS IS MAGNIFICENT!”
Cracks spread outward from the shovel embedded in the earth. Pale light leaked from the fissures.
“Wake up! Wake up! Get up already!”
Morris twisted the grip ninety degrees and slammed downward into the thick cylindrical shaft. The moment he did, the light bursting from the cracks flared brilliantly.
“There it is! There it is! Hahahahahaha!”
“Oh? Morris is getting into it.”
“Hm. Quite enthusiastic today.”
“I’m not worried about that right now! My head! My heeeead is splitting apart!”
Ignoring Joseline’s cries, Morris pumped the handle faster and faster, as though operating a giant bellows. In response, the light erupting from the earth intensified. The cracks widened. The ground swelled and bulged under the immense Mana being forced through it.
“GOOOOO! GO FORTH!”
A thunderous roar echoed across the landscape. Then a colossal black stone wall burst from the earth.
The wall surged forward in a vast arc centered on Morris. Undead caught in its path were flung aside. Trees were uprooted, lifted, and smashed down. Like a giant folding fan opening across the land, the wall raced toward the distant Black Rock formation. It continued expanding, rapidly constructing a massive enclosure around the horrifying masses of undead gathered before Black Rock.
“Now, Knight-Commander! Throw the bottle!”
At Nosori’s shout, Cedric hurled the vial he had been holding. The bottle struck the crest of the still-rising wall and shattered instantly, spraying its contents across the stone.
“You see,” Nosori explained proudly, “this coating spreads across our mana in a layer only 0.02 microns thick! Even a pitiful wall like this will be completely covered in no time!”
“Pitiful?! What’s pitiful about it?!”
As the two resumed bickering, the transformation continued. The black stone rapidly became coated in a gleaming silver layer.
Within less than ten minutes, an enormous silver wall over five meters high stood before the knights. It stretched across the landscape like a shining fortress.
“…This is unbelievable.” Howard stared upward in amazement.
“Yeah. This completely blew my mind.”
Conrad’s eyes were equally wide.
Meanwhile, Nosori had collapsed onto the ground, sprawled flat on his back.
“The beauty of this Anti-Astral Coating is that its repulsive force increases in proportion to the amount of miasma possessed by whatever approaches it. The greater the mana contained within the target, the harder it becomes for them to get close. Hyohyohyohyo…”
Nearby, Seiwashi lay exhausted on the ground. Joseline had collapsed as well. A short distance away, even Morris was sprawled out in the dirt.
“Hm. That consumed far more mana than expected,” Seiwashi muttered. “It drained us completely. I doubt we’ll be moving anytime soon.”
“Uuuuhhh… I’m gonna die… I’m definitely gonna die…” Joseline whimpered.
Morris suddenly raised a limp fist into the air.
“Hey! What are you all standing around for?!” His voice was weak, but still carried. “Now bless the wall as well! If you do that, even an army of ten thousand undead won’t be able to shake it!”
“Even as it is, it’ll hold for at least five days! Hyohyohyohyo!”
Still lying flat on his back, Morris shouted advice for further strengthening the barrier. Hearing this, Lisa Tuttle immediately sprang into action. She hurriedly gathered the clergy members and began preparations to consecrate the wall into a sacred artifact, transforming it into an even more formidable defense against the undead.
