Due to the sudden switch, Carol had a slightly uncomfortable expression. Rather than discomfort, it’s just probably as she said; it’s still disorienting for her.
「Still, a different approach, huh. I’m frankly curious about it, but I’m scared, so I won’t ask.」
「Let’s see. It’s not something you can overcome even with prior knowledge, so I believe that’s for the best.
However, I have improved my Job mastery compared to before. It was unexpectedly difficult, though, since I didn’t have many opportunities to use my Job’s power.」
「Now that you mention it, I’ve heard that it’s difficult to develop Job mastery if your role doesn’t coincide with your Job. Fortunately for me, I don’t have to contend with that issue… But it must be challenging in your case.」
The Song Princess’ song can be heard equally by everyone within their range. In other words, utilizing the Song Princess’ power would naturally get you exposed.
I’m somewhat of an exception, but if I carelessly use my powers, Ciel would get worried about me. Also, the spirits might start a ruckus.
That’s why it was surprisingly hard for me to regularly use the Song Princess’ powers. I’m no match for Ciel, whose every single step feeds into improving her Dance Princess proficiency.
That aside, there is one thing I’m curious about in the topic of Jobs.
「Carol, in your research, you delve into the mechanics of Jobs, right?」
「Since I have a Sorcerer Job, understanding my Job helps me understand sorcery, after all.」
「Other than the categories of Lesser, Intermediate, and Advanced, Jobs also have a separate mastery level, correct?」
「The greater your Job mastery, the stronger your Job’s capabilities become. This is how it’s possible for Lesser Jobs to be able to defeat the Crowned Jobs.」
「So this Job mastery, how much does it affect actions not directly related to the Job itself?」
If a Swordsman uses the sword techniques they have a high proficiency on when, let’s say, using a spear, will it have any effect?
If it does, then regardless of the Jobs, wouldn’t increasing your proficiency with them expand your options?
Jobs are portions of divine power granted by the gods to humanity. It wouldn’t be strange if it had more capabilities than us humans realize.
「Generally, it doesn’t.」
「That means that the ways Jobs affect you are set. If someone with a Swordsman Job were to use a spear like a sword, the Job might be able to function to some extent.」
「Let’s see. What constitutes a sword? If you consider a spear to be a really long rapier, then perhaps it would be somewhat functional… Right, that makes sense.」
「On the other hand, if one can use sorcery, they should be able to combine sword techniques with spells.」
It’s the case with Ciel’s dances. The reason why Ciel can freely use sorcery while dancing is because Ciel is capable of using sorcery to begin with.
On the other hand, the reason why Ciel’s sword dance is lacking is because Ciel’s sword skills are far behind her mastery of sorceries.
「Isn’t that the domain of the Sorceric Knight Job?」
「Even an Ice Sorcery Princess can use flame sorcery, correct?」
「… That’s right.」
Carol was about to argue against it, but she has a good understanding of the sorcery.
It might be easier for an Ice Sorcery Princess to cast ice-attribute spells, but that doesn’t make them incapable of using other attributes.
The skill you cultivated with ice sorcery is not necessarily inapplicable to sorcery of other attributes.
But this is only applicable because both are within the same category of ‘sorcery,’ I think.
「Well, in short, one can potentially broaden application of their abilities based on the interpretation of a Job, I suppose.」
「Incidentally, Carol, how much do you know about Magic Eyes?」
「That’s sudden. I know mostly nothing about it, but it apparently points to a unique constitution that affects the eyes. This sounds like a fairy tale, but there’s even a story of magic eyes that can indiscriminately burn anything in their field of vision.
Thinking about it from a sorceric viewpoint, it’s concluded that the eyes must have played the function of a magic circle.」
Carol cheerfully elaborated on the topic, but then suddenly her eyes opened wide as if she remembered something important.
「I recall now. I’m positive that I’ve read a paper on replicating the function of magic eyes. I quickly skimmed through the rest of the paper when I saw that their method was to engrave a magic circle directly on the eyes, but it resulted in a somewhat unusual sorcery and a loss of the ability to use other magic circles, so it was concluded to have no practical utility.」
「At worst, you’d probably risk going blind.」
「Most likely. Besides, while I can’t recall the details, I do recall thinking that it’d be just better to have magic circles in hand like normal.」
As Carol and I discussed magic eyes, Ciel suddenly said, 『I’m jealous, so jealous!』
『Shall we switch?』
While it’s probably not the answer Ciel hoped to hear, I suggested that we switch, and, as expected, she replied, 『That’s not what I mean.』
She then followed with, 『I’m jealous of Belltina.』
For a moment, I couldn’t understand what exactly made her jealous, but it seems like she noticed I started the whole exchange about the magic eyes for Belltina’s sake.
Am I biased for finding Ciel adorable for being simply jealous and not actively intervening?
I’ve done much more for Ciel’s sake than I have for Belltina, though. And it’s probably because she understands this that she’s done nothing other than voice her jealousy.
In that case, I suppose I shouldn’t worry about similar happenings in the future.
After all, regardless of what the future brings, Ciel being my top priority will never change for eternity.
「Speaking of magic circles, will the exact same magic circle made by different creators have the same effect?」
「Under the assumption that the resulting magic circle is exactly the same, I think so.」
「The same magic circle used by different people will have some difference in potency, right?」
「That’s right. It’s precisely why sorceric tools use magic cores to maintain stability and consistency in their operation.」
「When a water sorcerer uses a magic circle of a water spell, its efficacy will be greater, correct?」
「It’s said to be the case. However, there hasn’t been any credible research proving it.」
「In that case, what about…」
To my inquiry, Carol responded, 「That may be possible.」
And that ends this chapter! Our sorcery geeks continue geeking out about their favorite thing, how nice~
First of all, it’s cute how Ciel shows jealousy but doesn’t stop Ain because she does want to help Belltina too. Really nice that they have same-age friends to care about now. Moving on, it was pretty nice of Ain to share about her observations about sorcery. From this conversation, it seems like what’s holding many people back is really the lack of interdisciplinarity skills and knowledge. Many people tend to get stuck at just learning about things directly related to their Jobs, basically typecasting themselves. We see from the more experienced hunters that they do favor having a wide skillset, but the general populace probably doesn’t think that way, you’re basically discouraged from learning things outside of your specialty.
Now then, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Please feel free to comment. Stay healthy, stay safe, and have a nice week~!
