The Ashen Knight landed with a heavy thud, and the man in the coat sighed, “That again?”
But that was only the beginning. A second one followed right after, then more, going to ten, fifteen, a hundred, and even two hundred, falling one after another from above.
“M-Master…what’s happening..?!”
“Why…how… This should be impossible..!”
It only took a moment for them to be surrounded by Ashen Knights.
That was not the type of summoning either of them knew, if anything, it was more like the *army* of legends.
The man in the coat was confident enough that he could deal with a dozen Ashen Knights, but a hundred was a stretch, not to mention two hundred.
Numbers alone presented an advantage, but when all of them were as armed and powerful as Armor Spirits, they could only be described as an army.
And they were not the same Ashen Knights he had fought earlier.
Those closest to him held swords and shields, while the rows behind them were armed with long spears.
In essence, they had a phalanx formation.
That was not the end of it either. Above the walls around them were hundreds more of Ashen Knights, all holding fully drawn longbows.
In just an instant, Mira had created a situation in which not even a mouse could hide and scurry away from.
Mira had anticipated any situation, making sure that no matter what happened, her opponents could not run.
She had been working on that back in the training area, as soon as the coat in the man showed up. Popotwise was already flying above them, so Mira used her viewpoint to set up enough summon spots to deploy her army.
It was all insurance to anticipate any situation, especially so she could perform her experiments in a safe environment.
In a way, she had been toying with her opponents the entire time, while preserving the ability to shut them down the instant she needed.
“I would really suggest you surrender now, so what’ll it be? Are you going to stop now?”
Mira climbed on the shoulder of the Dark Knight behind her, allowing her to see the man in the coat completely surrounded, and urging him to give up. But the tone of her voice was also taunting, almost like she was nudging him to keep resisting instead.
A situation like that made it extremely difficult to escape, even for the strongest men. If the man in the coat tried to ram his way through, the shields would absorb all his momentum, followed by a skewering from the spears.
If he tried jumping across them instead, a storm of arrows would be unleashed on him. He could handle a few dozen, but there were hundreds of archers, enough to make it a lost cause.
There was really nothing the man in the coat and Eagle could do in this situation.
“I’m sorry, Eagle. I won’t be able to leave with you.”
Once captured, it was only a matter of time before he confessed what he knew. Ideally they wanted to escape together, but at this point that no longer seemed possible.
Still, the man in the coat was hoping he could make it out alone. With that in mind, he turned to Eagle, rearing his fist to first seal Eagle’s lips.
“Oh, I can’t let you do that.”
It was best to have as many sources of information as possible, so the moment that happened, one of the Ashen Knights swung its spear to block the punch.
“I knew you’d do that!”
It was all a ruse. The man in the coat grabbed the spear, pulling it along and throwing it to the other side. The spear flew like a cannon ball, mowing down a line of Ashen Knights.
“Let’s go!”
There was a small path now, and the man in the coat ran straight into it, telling Eagle to follow as well. And as if they had rehearsed it, Eagle sprang on his feet to go with him.
Or at least he tried to.
A moment later, his voice was drowned by a thunderous noise as the sky darkened, a black rain falling on them. The archers on the wall had shot their arrows.
Those arrows all had an iron ball at their tips, and the ground began trembling and shaking once they reached down.
Soon, the effects of them striking their target became evident.
“It can’t…be…”
“M-Master…”
All of the arrows concentrated on the spot where the man in the coat and Eagle stood, and without cover, the arrows struck them, breaking their bones.
Normal arrows would have killed them already, and if their bodies were not so resilient, they would have been crushed as well. The only reason why their heads were not caved in was because they desperately covered themselves with their arms.
“I never knew summoners…could fight like this…”
The man in the coat regretted underestimating his opponent so much.
He really thought the archers were just a bluff, that they would not shoot.
The reason was simple. He was surrounded by Ashen Knights, allies of the archers, and all the arrows would have caused heavy friendly losses.
So he did not even consider that as an option. He only thought the Ashen Knights nearby would react.
In the end, Mira still let the archers release their arrows. That was how summons could fight. Friendly fire meant nothing if it allowed the enemy to be defeated, something no regular army would ever do.
“Hmm, that worked well.”
The surviving Ashen Knights moved aside, letting Mira check on the two fallen men, and producing a happy reaction.
All of the arrows vanished, leaving behind the dimpled and cracked ground, showing just how violent the strike had been. All of the beautiful tiling work was nowhere to be seen.
“Good good, it went just as planned. I can definitely use this to restrain enemies in the future too.”
She still needed to consider the shift in weight the round arrow tips caused, and work on their aim, but they had been effective. Now that her experiment was validated, she raised her head, waving at Esmeralda who had just arrived.
“Heyyy, Emeko, could you hurry it up a bit!”
The man in the coat and Eagle had been restrained successfully, but they were gravely injured from the drastic means she used, and they would die shortly if they were left like that.
But that was also within Mira’s calculations, making sure they lived long enough for Esmeralda to get there.
“Yeah yeah, I’m almost there… Wait, were you getting ready for war? And you even got a stranger involved.”
Esmeralda sprinted a bit, her face going pale the moment she saw all the Ashen Knights and the two captives.
She could not understand how Mira had done all of that, in less than ten minutes.
“Okay Emeko, so these two here…”
Mira quickly explained who the man in the coat and Eagle were, then telling her to heal them.
First she examined them, muttering, “This is awful…” looking at them, which was quite an extreme reaction for someone who had been through many battlefields. That was just how badly injured those two men were.
