Kagura activated her special interrogation spell, and the process began in that room below the tower. The target was the assassin sent there by Ira Muerte, who they hoped possessed even more in-depth knowledge.
Mira, Alma, Esmeralda, and Noin stood by, watching as Kagura put the assassin in a state of complete submissive hypnotization.
Then after a few simple questions to verify everything went well, they began prodding deeper to extract more information from him. They asked about his organization, its leaders, other members, and more miscellaneous information.
But a weird trend became noticeable after a couple of questions, which only continued as they moved forward.
“Let me ask you again. Who are the leaders of your organization?”
Alma tried again, only to receive the same unsatisfactory answer. The assassin claimed, for the second time, that he did not belong to any organization, so he had no leaders either. The more they asked, the more it seemed that he not only did not know about the organization, he was not involved with them at all.
“What’s going on here…?”
They were convinced that he had been sent there by Ira Muerte, as he was captured in the trap they set up. But that did not match the information he gave. He could not be lying either, as he showed no signs of resisting Kagura’s spell.
The only explanation was that he really did not know about Ira Muerte. Then who could he be?
Alma changed her line of questioning, switching from focusing on the organization, to how he came to be there.
“What’s your job?”
“I do everything.”
“Everything? Can you be more specific?”
“Everything, from babysitting to killing people.”
“So you’ve been an assassin too?”
“Yes.”
The answers gradually became more helpful, granting them some more insight.
While he said he did anything, most of the jobs he got were not what most people considered respectable jobs. He had killed people, helped dispose of bodies, supplied illegal goods, scouted locations for heists, and so on.
He also revealed everything about how he obtained his current job.
It had all been an anonymous request, telling him to go assassinate someone being held within a secret jail within Nirvana’s palace.
According to the note, that prisoner had destroyed the anonymous employer’s family, leading to a mortal grudge.
To top it off, there were thirty million Rils included as an advance payment, with the same amount promised on completion. There was also a somewhat complete map of the palace, which gave him the confidence to accept the job. Not to mention that the target was supposedly a really wicked man, so he would be let off easy if he just said he was doing it for a noble.
“Then what do you know about the person who hired you?”
He seemed to almost pity whoever had hired him, but Alma’s voice was impassible as she continued questioning him.
“I don’t know anything.”
He gave a short response.
At the same time, there was the sound of something small hitting the ground.
Everyone turned in that direction, seeing a small shattered ring on the floor.
“Hmm… It looks like it was imbued with some sort of spell.”
It was impossible to tell what the spell was, now that the ring was in pieces, but Mira was sure that it was some sort of Magic Ware. No one there recognized it either, meaning it belonged to the captive.
Alma asked him what that ring did, and he answered that it was a tool to suppress his presence. His employer had included it together with the map, and a second tool, which apparently raised a smokescreen in case an escape was necessary.
Noin, who had captured him, claimed that the second tool had failed to activate, as during the chase he had thrown something on the ground to no effect.
They tried to get more information about the employer after that, to little avail. Everything had been delivered to him through a bag left at his office, which included the description of the job, the tools, map, and advance payment.
“Hmm, that sounds really suspicious.”
“That it does.”
Mira and Kagura had the same idea hearing what the man was saying. Maybe he was being deceived.
“Yeah, that doesn’t really add up.”
“They definitely tricked him into this.”
Alma and Esmeralda were thinking the same, this man was gravely misinformed about the situation.
But the map he was given did point to the location of the underground jail. It included so many details that one had to wonder just how the employer had managed to get that information.
Not to mention that the marked spot was exactly the cell where Jorg was being held. Only a handful of people knew that Jorg had been captured, and Alma knew every single one of them.
And she was convinced that none of them were the kind of person to hire an assassin like that. In other words, whoever had hired the assassin was part of Ira Muerte.
“Still, that was a really reckless plan. He might have gotten past a couple of traps, but they probably picked someone they won’t mind losing.”
Noin was almost impressed with the man as he recounted his capture.
The threat posed by the truth serum, Ghost Whisper, was the reason why Ira Muerte wanted to get rid of Jorg, but if they sent someone from the organization and the attempt failed, then they would be serving up even more information on a silver platter.
So it made sense that they hired a third party with as little contact as possible.
On the other hand, a failed attempt did nothing about Jorg.
“That’s true. They already filled up so much in this map, they should have taken more time to scout the place better.”
Glancing at the map, Esmeralda made a rather pragmatic comment.
