“…What a really white room”

When I woke up in the morning, I found myself in a completely white room.
No, I mean it. It was so white that I couldn’t even tell where the walls or ceiling were.
It was a space so ambiguous I couldn’t tell whether it was small or large. The more I looked at it, the more uneasy I felt.

“Finally awake, new reincarnator.”
“Uh-huh… Morning.”
“…You’re awfully casual.”

No, I’m just bad when I first wake up. My head’s not working yet.
For now, I’d try asking the person whom I could only hear the voice of.

“Where is this?”
“The Reincarnation Room. Here, we’ll decide where you’ll be reincarnated, and what race you’ll be reborn as.”

This person has a woman’s voice, but talks like an old man.

” …So, I died, Loli grampa?”
“Indeed. Unfortunately…wait, loli grampa!?”
“Yes. Loli grampa.”
“You little…that’s rude.”
“Sorry. Would grampa loli have been better?”
“That’s not the issue! I’m not talking about the word order!”

This person is so naggy. She don’t have to be so loud when I just woke up, geez.
I stand up straight, stretch to shake off the drowsiness, and ask the Loli grampa a question.

“Nn, nnh… Why did I die?”
“You sure move on fast… W-well, fine. Your cause of death was sleep apnea.”

Sleep apnea.
That thing where you stop breathing while you’re asleep…right?

“Sleep apnea isn’t supposed to be something that kills you, though. It just increases the risk of cerebrovascular disorders and heart disease.”
“Hm? All I heard was that you died out of sleep apnea, though? Either way, sleep apnea was probably the indirect cause. Honestly, the higher-ups can be so sloppy with their work… Long story short, you’re dead. All right?”
“Okay, I understand.”

I don’t really get the part about the higher-ups, but if I’m dead, then it can’t be helped. It didn’t hurt, so I guess that’s fine. It’s much better than dying after suffering or being in pain.
Rather than living pointlessly long and suffering before dying, even if I’m young, dying easily like this is more ideal for me.

“So… reincarnation? Why am I being reincarnated? Is there some rule that everyone who dies from sleep apnea gets reincarnated?”
“No. It’s because your soul was… well, how do I put it… lethargic.”
“Lethargic…?”

It’s true that, just as she said, I was the embodiment of lethargy itself in my everyday life, a person without even a fragment of motivation.
I lived clinging to my parents like a parasite to its hosts, an existence utterly steeped in self-indulgence.

“I guess I’m like dust of the world, or excess baggage, an existence that provides no benefit even if it exists, like a uvula or an appendix.”
“Your self-evaluation is merciless!?”
“Just stating the truth. So, what are you going to do by reincarnating someone so unmotivated? Go and give the slot to someone with more drive. You know, someone who died like… ‘NAAAUUURRR I CAN’T DIE YEEEETTTTT!!!!’ would be more suitable for this kind of thing, right? Well then, good night.”
“Wait. Don’t start going back to sleep while making such a reasonable argument. And what was that strangely spirited acting just now?”

The futon disappeared right in front of my eyes. I hadn’t even blinked, it really vanished like a cloud.

…This doesn’t seem to be a dream.

Haa. What a pain. I miss my futon already.
