「I’m sure some have already learned this from experiencing failure firsthand, but sorceric tool creation is not simply about drawing neat magic circles. The compatibility of the medium you chose is also an important factor.
For example, should you wish to craft a sorceric lamplight, you will need material to be illuminated; should you wish to create a sorceric waterspout, you will need a part where the water will emerge.」

We’ve already had a lot of activities in the Sorceric Tools Course at this point, yet Mr. Liens started with this. It must be because he wants us to learn what we can from failure. Or perhaps to warn us against neglecting the physical part of the sorceric tools, or to teach us the difficulty of crafting new sorceric tools.
I’m also included in team failure. At first, I thought of making a hair dryer for my project, but since I couldn’t get the drying part working, I had no choice but to give up on it. In the end, I even consulted with Mr. Liens, but he told me that it’s still difficult at this stage.
I still remember what a hair dryer looks like, but I don’t know what material to use for it, and it’s an annoying silhouette to shape.

You can easily create a water-producing sorceric tool by drawing a magic circle on a random plank with the necessary ink, but the water would just flow everywhere nonstop, and it won’t be as strong. This is why both the material and the shape of the medium are important.

You can take an existing, already established sorceric tool’s design and put your spin on it to make your own original, but there seems to be no existing sorceric tool that’s similar to a hair dryer.
To be precise, if there already is, then its design has not been released to the public.
This country apparently has some form of patent system, but there are technologies still kept top secret.

And so, my first sorceric tool attempt ended in failure, and I decided to make a kotatsu instead. There are publicly released designs for heating implements, so I just need to attach it to a table, put a futon on top of it, and then add a countertop as weight; it should be achievable.

I am questioning my choice of making a kotatsu with summer right around the corner, but since I’m only making a small sorceric tool that can sit on my desk, I’ve stopped being choosy.

If I start with a miniature, I can just enlarge it into a proper kotatsu in the future, and with it being smaller, it’s easier to bounce back from failure.
With a large one, just making the table part is challenging enough.

「Depending on your Job, it’s also possible to only create the magic circle and outsource the physical parts of the magic tools to other craftsmen, and the opposite is also true. However, in this class, I will have you go through the entire creation process, so please decide on a feasible project.」
「In that case, using accessories would be difficult, huh…」

Beside me, Tietta muttered to herself. While the plans and designs for creating accessory-type sorceric tools are publicly available, they’re still quite difficult to make. While not as difficult as a magic pouch, what you can make is almost practically dependent on your Job. As far as I know, Tietta should be capable of making those, but just because her Job is compatible doesn’t mean she can craft those immediately.

Also sitting next to me, opposite of Tietta, is Belltina drowsily nodding off. Is she going to be alright?
If not, I can teach her about the lesson content later, though.

「Professor, isn’t there anything we can do with the magic core’s size?」
「There are techniques that can make large magic cores smaller or change their shape. However, only individuals with crafting Jobs can perform those, and the techniques themselves are quite sophisticated, so it’s not easy to resolve.」
「Then would it be better off to give up on the magic core’s size at this point?」
「No, stores that handle magic cores sell pre-processed cores of different sizes, so you can purchase from there. There are also places where you can order custom sizes, and our class has a supply of standard market-sized magic cores.」

Mr. Liens thoroughly answered the questions a student raised. Then, he lined up magic cores of different sizes on top of the lectern. While they vary in size, they all seem to be E-rank magic cores based on their magic power.

「I originally wanted to have the Job holders try to process magic cores, though…」
「Was there an issue with that?」
「The supplies are currently low, you see, so we don’t have the leeway to use some for practice.」

The students seem to be aware of the supply issue, as many nodded in understanding.
How do I say this; I really have no luck. My Job doesn’t allow me to process magic cores, but I at least wanted to see how it’s done.

Side note: if you want to make an accessory-type sorceric tool, you’ll need the ability to process magic cores. You could just purchase a small magic core, but it’ll be difficult to draw a magic circle on it.

That’s why common practice is to directly draw a magic circle on a magic core and then shrink it down to size.

In other words, they’re generally disposable. Since magic cores disappear after use, some are difficult to use even just as accessories.
As the discussion part ended, the teacher instructed us to start working on our projects.

『So, what does this sorceric tool do?』
『It warms you up during the winter season, I suppose.』

As I completed the kotatsu magic circle, Ciel spoke up.
The two beside me are currently struggling with basic magic circles. Yup, about this course, since there are students who don’t have prior knowledge of magic circles, we are given sample designs of basic sorceric tools with guides for drawing magic circles included. Like one for illumination, or for a flask that boils water. Still, for people who have never studied magic circles before, it’s still difficult to draw.

Even students that are attempting to make their own originals are given the choice to just make the sample sorceric tools if they get stuck. At the same time, there have been students who immediately chose to craft one of the basics to satisfy the course requirements as soon as possible.

Translator's Note

And that ends this update! Our girls are once again in class, and it seems like they’re having a busy day! Also, Bell, girl, please pay attention to class…

For this chapter, we’re given focus on sorceric tools and how they’re made. Poor Ain got too greedy and failed on her first attempt when her experience with magic circles should have been a big advantage for her. Well, it’s probably because she wanted to apply her experience in hair drying. Honestly, she probably would have had a better chance with a hair iron. Anyway, not much for me to say this time, so that’s it for me today! I got too used to making comments for whole chapters…

Now then, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Please feel free to comment. Stay healthy, stay safe, and have a nice week~!
