The party grew lively once the members of Class A joined in, with Vannabelle enthusiastically ordering round after round of food and drinks for everyone to enjoy.
Though the two classes rarely interacted, the shared experience of the Zersteller – Canalford Cup gave them plenty to talk about. The room buzzed with laughter and conversation. In particular, Isaac and Romeo’s detailed explanations of the Mecha Soldiers proved a hit among the engineering and military students, and Rizel’s eager questioning made for quite the entertaining scene to watch.
It was a wonderful gathering—but for someone like me, who had spent nearly an entire previous life in solitude, it was a bit exhausting too. Even Alfe, who usually stayed by my side, was busy demonstrating a small-scale version of her multi-vision spells.
As for Hom, a casual remark had revealed that she was a disciple of Master Tao Ran, and she was now the subject of admiring glances from several military students. She wasn’t particularly good with attention, but it seemed she was happy when others praised me or the old master. Watching her do her best to join the conversation filled me with quiet pride.
“…Phew.”
Slipping outside for some air, I was greeted by a cool night breeze. From a short distance away, I could see the warmly lit building, with the cheerful voices and laughter of Class A and Class F students spilling out into the night streets.
It seemed that similar celebrations were happening all across town—despite the late hour, the city still shone bright with light and life. It had been a while since I last stepped out of the dorms; maybe taking a little walk around wouldn’t be so bad.
Just as that thought crossed my mind, I heard the sound of the restaurant door opening behind me.
“Master!”
Hom came running toward me, panic in her voice—she must have noticed I was gone.
“I’m not going anywhere, Hom. I just wanted a bit of fresh air.”
“I see…”
Judging from how out of breath she was, I’d clearly worried her more than I intended.
“In a place that lively, I never quite know what to do with myself.”
“It’s a joyful gathering. But there hasn’t been a chance for us to talk alone.”
I gave a small shrug, and she nodded as if she understood perfectly.
“Then let’s take the opportunity to talk here for a bit. First of all, we should celebrate your victory over Estea… Is there anything you’d like as a reward?”
If I was going to celebrate her properly, it felt right to make the gesture clear—so I offered a present. Hom thought for a moment, then reached into her pocket and pulled out a battered magical device.
“…Ah, Hiraishin, huh.”
Even though it had served its purpose, I could tell how much she still cherished it. I took it gently in my hand, staring at the scorched metal.
“Yes. If I could have a new Hiraishin… that would make me happy.”
“I was planning to make you an even better one. But is there anything else you’d like?”
I slipped the old Hiraishin into my pocket and asked again. Hom thought for a moment longer, then quietly sat down in front of me.
“I’d like you to pat my head… like you always do.”
“Of course.”
Smiling, I drew her into my arms. As I tenderly stroked her hair—still carrying the faint scent of freshly washed soap—I felt her small body tremble.
“…Are you crying?”
As I asked, a heat welled up behind my own eyes. This tiny girl had fought through that Colosseum and emerged victorious—for my sake, yes, but above all for her own.
“…Yes. But… I don’t understand why…”
Hom lifted her face as she answered, tears glimmering in her eyes—but even through them, she was smiling in that gentle, unmistakably Hom way.
“Tears can fall when you’re happy too. I’m happy as well.”
“Master…”
Good grief. Her tears were contagious—mine began to fall before I knew it. Overwhelmed by joy, affection, and something too deep for words, I simply pulled Hom into my arms and held her tight.
“…Master. From now on, may I still stay by your—”
“Of course, Hom. For as long as you wish to, we’ll always be together. You’re my daughter, and my precious family.”
I cut her off gently, hugging her even closer as I spoke.
She must have been afraid all this time. Because I had made her that way—because I had built her to seek purpose in my approval—she had doubted her own worth. But now, she has faced all of that and overcome it on her own.
“Family… That means… I can stay with you forever, can’t I…?”
Her voice trembled in my arms.
“You’ve done so well. You’re my pride and joy, Hom.”
I whispered it softly into her ear, stroking her head to soothe her as she wept in my embrace.
