Today, I met Senior Veit for the first time.
He’s in the Demon Lord’s Third Division, like me, and holds the same position of Vice-Commander. Or was it Deputy? Oh well, close enough.
Senior is a werewolf, and apparently super strong.
Master said he once easily defeated Captain Dog, that famous Beast Ogre from the Second Division. And isn’t Dog one of the top five strongest in the Second Division?
I’ve never fought anyone stronger than myself before.
I’m really curious.
And apparently, Senior Veit is also amazing as a commander.
I heard he subdued the city of Lüenheit with just 56 members of the werewolf unit. And get this—zero casualties. That’s seriously impressive.
Even if I had 56 centaur warriors under my command, there’s no way I could capture a city that big.
He’s also supposed to be quite skilled as a mage. I don’t really understand that stuff, but Master said so, so it must be true.
Ah—by “Master,” I mean the Great Sage Gomoviroa. I’m technically her apprentice. Even though I can’t use magic…
Senior is a werewolf mage, which is why he has the cool title “Demon Wolf.”
Isn’t that awesome? He’s strong as a warrior, a commander, and even as a mage.
But what’s even more incredible is his power over humans.
He controls Lüenheit, but unlike Senior Marlene, he does it in a totally different way.
Can you believe it? He kept the human governor in place. Even the human guards ended up siding with him.
No, seriously. I saw the guards actually working with my own eyes.
Us centaurs may look half-human, but we’re definitely not the same inside. We’re proud warriors of the demon race.
That’s why I don’t really understand how humans think.
Werewolves are also proud hunters of the demon race, or so I hear, but Senior seems to understand everything about how humans think. That’s what everyone says.
…Could he maybe even read my mind?
A guy this amazing is, of course, deeply trusted by the Demon Lord.
From what I heard, he even commands a unit of dragonkin directly under the Demon Lord. I caught a glimpse of them in Lüenheit.
Even Master, who’s a division commander, doesn’t have any dragonkin under her.
It makes sense he’s called the “strongest deputy” in the Demon Lord’s army.
But the most shocking thing was actually meeting him in person.
You know what?
My heart was pounding.
He’s so cool! I mean, he’s a famous general that everyone in the Demon Lord’s army knows, and yet he was so kind to someone like me, a total stranger!
Ahhh, just remembering it makes my heart want to explode!
Even when I totally forgot to send notice and showed up with three times the expected troops, he immediately got everyone’s lodging sorted out. Everything he does is just so cool!
He scolded me a little, but even that felt mature and kind, and it made my heart flutter. I found myself answering super politely without even thinking.
Also, that flustered face he makes when I call him “Senior” is a little pathetic and weirdly cute!
But the coolest moment was when I asked him for reinforcements! I thought he might say no, but instead, he said he’d come himself!
Whoa—this is bad.
Like, seriously bad.
But I can’t afford to just get carried away with excitement.
This battle is life or death for us centaurs.
For centuries, humans have been expanding their territories, and we’ve been steadily losing our land.
We’re people of the plains. If the plains get turned into farmland, we’re left with nowhere to live.
Forest and mountain demons seem to be managing okay, but us centaurs have the most direct conflict with humans.
According to the elders, our population has been declining for a long time. At this rate, we’re bound to go extinct.
Until now, we tried to avoid conflict and just endured—but we can’t anymore.
I originally intended to bring just 500 warriors from my own tribe, but since this is a crisis affecting all centaurs, warriors from other tribes came too. We ended up with 1,500.
Honestly, I’m scared to be responsible for so many lives.
This is practically the entire fighting force of the centaur race. Our future is on the line.
If I make just one bad call, we could all be wiped out.
It’s terrifying.
That’s why, cowardly as it may be, I leaned on Senior Veit.
His reputation isn’t limited to the Demon Lord’s army. Among the centaurs too, everyone knows the name Veit the Demon Wolf.
Senior probably doesn’t know how famous he is, since he’s always in Lüenheit.
But when word got out that he’d be joining us, morale in the centaur troops skyrocketed.
I mean, of course it did—he’s one of the strongest warriors, second only to the Demon Lord and our division commanders. Fighting alongside someone like him is the greatest honor for any centaur.
I’m sure now that everyone will give their all in the assault on Tübahn.
But… I know I shouldn’t rely on him too much. I regret that.
I’ll gain experience quickly and become a great commander like him! So please, just this once—let it slide!
…If we pull off the Tübahn campaign, will Senior praise me?
