Even kids could hunt them safely, and they did so often to earn pocket money, but the rabbits were tricky due to their speed and skittishness. Sometimes, the kids would spend all day hunting just to turn up empty-handed.
Given they were hard to catch, they sold well and were a great source of money!
I found it amazing that Dana had managed to get 5-6 of the slippery Jackalopes per day. It would be impossible for normal children to catch 5 Jackalopes in a day. Those were some crazy numbers!
“You see, that was the opportunity I had to just stay in the forest for a week and hunt! So I got obsessed with setting a record! Ahahaha!”
Dana grinned proudly.
(She’s no good, too…)
The ceremony was originally meant to test your survival skills and willpower against the treacherous Amukham Forest. Yet Dana had completely thrown the initial objective out the window and had instead focused on hunting Jackalopes the whole time, trying to set a record… She was no good! Definitely not a person to take advice from!
This just helped me realize that both Irvine and Dana only had muscles for brains.
(Fiorina, please, don’t nod like you’re impressed by what she just said! Carl, not you too! These two are not normal! You should never, ever copy them! Please, learn from normal people!!)
As I looked around in disbelief, my eyes met Bibi’s. She shook her head with a little smirk and a sigh. It seemed we were on the same page. Those two were completely hopeless. With a bit of hope left, I timidly turned to look at Corin.
(At least she should be okay, right?)
“Well, I started by looking for a safe place to camp.”
(This! This is what I was talking about! Now that’s a normal way of thinking! She’s the type of person I was looking for! I’d expect nothing less from an honor student! I love you, Corin!)
“I see. I see. And then? What did you do then?” I asked, getting closer to Corin and urging her to continue.
“It was a good thing I practiced pitching the tent ahead of time. If I hadn’t, I would’ve wasted a whole day. I can produce water on my own, so that wasn’t an issue, but I did have some trouble making and maintaining a fire.”
(I knew that she’d be amazing!)
Bibi and I nodded as we listened to Corin.
(Bibi’s ceremony was also the month after the next, so this kind of real advice was just what we needed! Real advice from someone who was actually normal. What worked? What didn’t? This was exactly what I wanted to hear! Come to think of it, there’s one more person with experience.)
I glanced over and saw Mia looking at me, as if she were just waiting for me to ask.
“Um, Mia, how was it for you?”
I asked, and her whole face lit up. She looked so happy and started talking immediately.
“Mine was during the 6th Blue Moon, you know! It was already snowing. I thought that it would be hard for me to stay in the tent. So I enclosed it with nearby plants.”
Mia explained how she built a little dome-like shelter to shield herself from the wind by bending tree branches and binding ivy together with Mana. The snow piled on top, making the whole thing look like a hut, and she just endured the cold inside.
“The snow and wind were cold, and I had to make the fire myself, so it was very tough!”
Yes, the difficulty of the ceremony depended on the season and weather. It had to be done a week after your birthday so that it couldn’t be postponed due to weather. There were rare cases where it had been moved up, but never delayed due to the weather. So there were kids like Mia who had to do it in the freezing cold, and also kids like me and Bibi, who got better conditions. Still, if a storm rolled in, even the nicer seasons could be dangerous. Besides, the warmer seasons were also the time when wild animals were more active, so we couldn’t let our guard down.
“But I was allowed to bring a week’s worth of food, a tent, and a sleeping bag for the cold. I was also allowed a magic heating tool, so I managed.”
The less experienced kids all looked relieved hearing that. It was nice that kids who had to take the ceremony in harsher conditions were allowed to bring food. Feeding yourself in winter was tough! But in warmer seasons like ours, we had to handle food ourselves. Still, Dana and Irvine had hunted just fine without any trouble!
“But still, I had to endure the cold for a week. Just thinking about that time lowers my temperature! My body’s craving warmth right now!”
“Huh?!”
Before I could react, Mia hugged me from the front! My face was buried in her generous chest!
“Ah! You’re so warm… So incredibly warm, Su!”
(T-This… This is Mia’s signature Meat Hold!)
It was a meat trap that used this comfy space to make me unable to escape! While inside, Mia would stroke my body all over as she pleased!
“Ah! N-No! S-Shtop it! D-Don’t pet me!”
“Ah! This warmth… Su’s warmth! And this softness!”
Mia’s hands glided over my back, armpits, hips—and even my butt!
(This is what she was so excited about! She planned this all along!)
Even though I knew this, I couldn’t pull away. I was puffing and squeezing her soft body in return!
(Ah! How sinful I am! The Meat Hold is truly not to be underestimated!)
But even while I was doing that, Mia’s hands kept pushing further!
(Not there! It’s forbidden! That place is off limits!)
“No! Ahhh! Hmmmmm!”
And once again, my embarrassing voice of defeat echoed in the room.
