A sharp, gray-green fin emerged from the calm surface of the sea, it was clear there was some sort of monster lurking beneath the waves. That massive wave from before must have been its doing.

Zane was blasted into the air yet again. Fortunately, the beach acted as a decent buffer, and he wasn’t killed on impact. However, the distance was too great for Starry to get a clear view of the monster’s form or stats.

Whatever it was, its attack was terrifying. A single wave had wiped out the full HP of Zane’s Gray Wolf form. If Starry had taken that hit instead, she would’ve been one-shotted for sure.

‘Let’s get the hell out of here! We have the Rainlily we needed anyway.’

Without hesitation, both Zane and Starry crushed their return scrolls.

A roar of water echoed toward them as a monstrous face emerged from beneath the sea.

Deepsea Behemoth
Grade Unique
Level 35
HP ???
Attack ???
Physical Defense ???
Magic Defense ???
Skills ???
Description The sovereign of the deep sea, capable of commanding tidal waves.

‘A level 35 Unique boss? We were incredibly lucky we did not die earlier. There’s absolutely no way we can handle something like that at our current level!’

Just before the Behemoth’s attack landed, the arcane symbols of their scrolls flared, enveloping both players and one pet in a column of light. A moment later, they were safely transported back to Wynwater City.

“Whew!” Zane let out a long breath. ‘That was way too close. That old man really could’ve warned us, he almost got both of us killed!’

Still, the mission was a success. He looked down at the glass vial containing the three stalks of Rainlily and gave a satisfied nod. The next step was simply to hand over the ingredients.

After handing everything to Zenn, the old man was first shocked by how fast Starry had returned. Then, without another word, he took the materials and shooed her out of the workshop.

“Come back this time tomorrow!” he called out. Then, muttering to himself, he added, “Kids these days… working this fast? I guess I won’t be getting any sleep tonight…”

‘Looks like class advancement will have to wait another day. Time to become an Alchemist then, those High-Grade HP potions just don’t cut it anymore.’

The Alchemist’s guild was located right inside Wynwater City, which was much more convenient. Following the map through a few twists and turns, Zane soon arrived at an atelier. As soon as he stepped inside, he was hit by a wave of bitter, herbal scents.

Unlike Zenn, the woman before him looked extremely young.

Master Alchemist: Sylvia
Grade: Epic
Level: 25
Description: Once a priestess, Sylvia grew weary of war and retreated to Wynwater City to focus on potion research. She has shown remarkable talent in the alchemical arts.

“Um, hello…” Zane greeted, seeing she was entirely focused on her work.

“Ah! Hi there!” she dusted her hands off and casually gathered her tousled black hair, letting it fall back over her shoulders.

“I’m here to become an Alchemist,” Zane stated plainly.

“Hmm…” Sylvia looked mildly troubled. “Why are so many adventurers interested in becoming Alchemists? Everyone says it’s boring, you know…”

‘Seriously? Is it okay to say something like that to an aspiring Alchemist?’

After complaining, she finally looked up. “If you want to become an Alchemist, you’ll have to follow the rules. We’re almost out of ingredients here… go gather some Lantern Grass.”

Ding!

System Notification: Sylvia has issued a C-rank quest,
“Gather Lantern Grass (0/100).”
Would you like to accept it?

Accept!

System Notification: Lantern Grass commonly grows on shaded hillsides, forest edges, shrublands, and in grass near roads and field ridges.

“Oh, and while you’re at it, grab a bag of apples on your way back,” Sylvia added offhandedly.
“Apples? For alchemy?”
“They can be used… but I just feel like eating some… ahahaha.” She laughed to herself and waved him off. “Go on, go on. I’m busy here.”
“…”

According to the hint, Mapleblossom Grove might be a good place to search, but Zane didn’t want to make a special trip just for materials. Instead, he headed to the Auction House.

‘Lantern Grass is sold in bundles of 100. The price for one bundle is… 1 gold? Seriously? These people might as well be highway robbers!’

It seemed too many players were willing to pay for convenience, which gave opportunists a chance to profit. After weighing his options, Zane decided that time was more valuable and chose not to waste it gathering by hand.

He also picked up a bag of apples from a nearby fruit stall.

“That fast?” Sylvia frowned. “Young people need to learn to do things themselves. You can’t always rely on money.”

She grabbed a fresh apple, took a big bite, and didn’t even bother washing it. The apple was bright red and crisp. “Well… since you, nom… brought me apples, nom…” She lifted her hand.

Ding!

System Notification: Congratulations, you have acquired the secondary profession Alchemist!

‘That’s it?’ Zane quickly opened the alchemy menu.

Just like brewing, beginner alchemists only had one starting recipe:

Cooling Powder
Effect Increases heat resistance and slightly reduces Confusion.
Recipe Cinnabar ×1, Licorice Root ×1, Hookwort ×1, Cardamom ×1

‘…What is this even useful for?!’

Zane flipped through the higher-level formulas. At Alchemy Level 6, he finally spotted the recipe for Holy Spirit Elixir.

‘Damn, I have to reach Level 6?’

“This is your alchemy furnace. Keep it safe.” Sylvia handed over what looked like a toy-sized cauldron.

Alchemy Furnace (Basic)
Can synthesize up to Level 3 elixirs.

Left with no choice, Zane headed to the general store and bought one full stack of each material for Cooling Powder, spending 5 gold in total. He found a quiet corner, opened the alchemy menu, and tossed in one set of ingredients.

The furnace began operating immediately. Flames roared to life and burned for about ten seconds before the lid opened again.

Ding!

System Notification: Synthesis successful. You’ve obtained [Cooling Powder] ×1. Alchemist EXP +1.

Seems like Level 1 recipes couldn’t fail. Zane repeated the process one hundred times, and it brought him to Alchemist Level 2.

At Level 2, the formulas finally started becoming useful.

Bloodflow Tonic
Effect Restores 1% of max HP per second for 5 seconds. Cooldown: 60 seconds.
Recipe Fresh Water ×1, Red Dates ×1, Bloodroot ×1

A total of 5% recovery, but at this stage of the game, it was still less effective than a High-Grade HP Potion. Plus, it had a long cooldown.

Fresh Water and Red Dates were available at the general store. But Bloodroot? The market price was absurd. The cheapest stack was 10 gold, far beyond what it was worth. Clearly, he’d have to gather it himself.

After heading deeper north into Mapleblossom Grove, hardly any players could be seen. That wasn’t surprising. The monsters in this area averaged around level 19, and with their nasty poison and paralysis effects, few players would willingly grind here.

That worked out well for Zane, who was out gathering herbs. Meanwhile, Starry used the time to grind Treants and help level up Starmew.

“It was me who found it first!” a girl gritted her teeth in front of Zane. Her hand clutched the top leaves of a Bloodroot.

Zane, on the other hand, had his grip around its root. “But I’m the one who dug it up,” Zane replied calmly.

“T-That’s because you snatched it from me! Let go already!”

Zane’s expression suddenly turned pale. He raised a trembling finger to point behind her. “Behind you… a Royal Treant just respawned!”

“Hmph! You think I’m a toddler? I’m not falling for th—”

Smack!

-786

The girl was only level 11, there was no way she could survive that kind of hit. She instantly vanished in a flash of white light.

Zane sighed and shook his head. “Honestly… and she didn’t even believe me.”
