「Is it truly alright for me to come along?」
「It’s fine. You might meet them while we’re back at Central, after all. I hope you can at least lend them a hand in case they need it.」
Today is the date we promised to do hunter work together with Palra and Belltina. Since Mia plans to continue hunter activities while we’re away in Central, we decided to bring her along.
Mia is relatively powerful, after all, and she has been working with our support while we were en route to Ausente Royal Capital. And she apparently does simple requests by herself in her free time.
Mia likely won’t be doing hunter work forever, but I decided to introduce her to Palra and Belltina to build up experience.
I’m aware that the surrounding area around the capital is relatively safe, but it’s somewhat worrying to have Palra and Belltina do hunter activities by themselves. I intended to abide by Ciel’s decisions on how much we should support the girls, but the way she happily agreed with introducing the two to Mia since it would be a good experience for them is burned to my mind.
「We arrived a bit early; did you have something in mind?」
「I wanted to have a look at the requests.」
Saying so, Ciel turned her attention to the request board. Convinced by her answer, Mia followed her gaze.
While the requests continue to decrease in number, there’s still a good amount of them remaining. However, there are only a few remaining student-level F-rank and below requests, which continues to decrease as more young hunters―those around Ciel’s age―come and go.
At this rate, there probably won’t be any F-rank requests left by the time the two girls arrive. Nonetheless, the guild will purchase any magic cores you get from defeating monsters, so it’s not like we wouldn’t have anything to do.
A normal party would have to consider the condition of their equipment, so just selling magic cores probably wouldn’t be worth the effort, but for better or for worse, our group today mainly consists of sorcerers. We may exhaust magic power, but it’s quite economical since we can fight without spending money.
Palra’s bow and arrows are a money sink, but it won’t be an issue if we’re only against weak monsters. After all, she hails from a village that’s by no means made of money. She’s capable of crafting her own arrows.
However, her handmade arrows can only defeat low-rank monsters. It’s effective against goblins, but not as much against wolves or orcs. Against high-rank monsters, even aiming at their eyes and other weak points wouldn’t result in much damage.
The results might be different if the arrows are infused with her Job’s power, but for Palra right now, dealing with monsters stronger than goblins would be difficult, both physically and mentally.
Nonetheless, she is still a student right now, and even after graduation, she’ll probably be fine with only defeating goblins for a while as a hunter. For now, she can take advantage of not needing much money for equipment and slowly save up money.
Without the equipment costs, she should be able to save as long as she stays thrifty.
As I continued looking at the board, two requests caught my eye. They were practically the same content-wise: a rare A-rank herb collection request. They asked for the same exact medical herb, but the completion rewards were completely different.
One was 20 large gold coins, while the other was 5 gold coins. 20 large gold coins, for context, are equal to two years’ worth of our expensive dorm room. For a commoner, that’ll be enough for them to never work again for their entire life.
5 gold coins by no means a meager amount for a commoner. A party we met in Estoque had a hard time gathering 3 gold pieces, so it’s certainly not an amount that’s easy to offer, but their rival is just powerful.
For a herb collection request, 5 gold coins is a hefty reward, but for an A-rank request, it’s extremely cheap.
As for the requested herb, upon closer inspection of the listed characteristics, it sounds very familiar. A four-leaf plant said to only grow in areas no humans would dare enter or locations with the risk of stampede outbreak.
『Those describe the plant used for a doll’s circuits, don’t it?』
『I thought the same thing. This is a major country’s capital, after all, so I suppose these sorts of requests shouldn’t be surprising to find.』
As there are many nobles in the royal capital, there is a particularly high demand for medicine. There are even requests for materials such as ‘dragon liver,’ ‘spirit tears,’ and ‘luminous deep sea blooms,’ materials whose curative effects and very existence are doubtful at best, not to mention potentially impossible to obtain.
Compared to those, the four-leaf clover request is still realistic, as it is known to exist and has verified curative properties.
This must be the sort of situation Munyechka feared of. Depending on its use, it has the potential to heal fatal diseases that could kill you tomorrow or even incurable ones. There are undoubtedly many who covet it.
『It shouldn’t be surprising, true, but why is there such a big difference between their rewards? It’s not like the smaller one has additional rewards either.』
『It’s probably just the difference of the client’s financial power.』
『Still, isn’t it too big of a difference?』
『Anyone is free to post a request, after all.』
We’ve never posted requests before, so I don’t completely understand how it works, but let’s say that there are strong monsters attacking or an incident that can affect many people; the representatives of a town or village, or the ruling lords, would then post a request for aid. For requests of this scale, the reward tends to be similar regardless of the location. It’s just common practice, basically.
On the other hand, for requests posted by individuals, since many may not know the common practice, there tends to be variation in the reward amount. Nonetheless, the guild does apparently offer pricing advice based on the request rank and requirements.
Some give up on their request when the suggested price greatly exceeds their expectation, but there are probably some that would have their request posted regardless.
Now, most people wouldn’t accept such a cheap request, so it’ll only be a wasted expense, but there are people who are grasping for any chance of hope.
And that ends this chapter! Just some window… shopping? While waiting for the other girls to come. The chapter title isn’t ominous at all, lmao.
It’s funny that we’re getting world building about how requests are priced in the story. Also, our girl Mia is meeting Palra and Belltina! It’s cute that our girls are worried about how the two will do during the break. Our girls have truly grown T~T
Now then, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Please feel free to comment. Stay healthy, stay safe, and have a nice week~!
