『Ain, what should I do about this?』
『It’s still a fair distance away; let’s observe if the two can notice it for now. If they still don’t by the time it gets too close, you can step forward and use it as a practice dummy for your rapier.』
『And if they do?』
『If there is still time to give instructions, let’s have the two of them defeat it while you stall for time. If they take too long, I’ll leave the final decision to you.』
『Understood. Still, Palra aside, can Belltina even attack properly?』
『It’s also to see if she can, if I have to say. Once we know this, we can assign party roles.』
While I was somewhat ominous about it, the approaching creature was just a stray wind goblin, so it’s no trouble. If it’s only goblins—even if we take Ailneige’s capabilities into consideration—I should be able to protect the two even from a hundred of them.
So it isn’t an issue, and I’m honestly more afraid of taking friendly fire from the two when they attack from behind us. Those are still blockable, though. While they may have high-tier Jobs, Ailneige can easily defend against attacks from people with no combat experience. That reminds me, how do bow-using Jobs take down high-ranked monsters?
With close combat weapons like swords and spears, the blades can be sharpened by coating them—consciously or subconsciously—with magic power, or rather the power of one’s Job. From observing the Fool’s Gathering, even non-combat Jobs can do something similar, so I shouldn’t be mistaken. Still, it isn’t as effective as when done with a combat Job, so maybe they’re compensating with pure competency?
Now with bow and arrows, enhancing the bow itself is easy, but enhancing arrows to be fired is different. Close-quarters weapons are enhanced through direct contact, while arrows are apparently a different story. I’m not really familiar with the details since I can’t use any attack imbued with magic power.
However, I have a hunch that enhancing an arrow might be within the realm of sorcery, which could explain why only people with particular Jobs—like Bowman and Huntsman—are able to pull it off. Even a normal arrow can take down a wolf, so I guess we’ll just have to hope that Palra is able to achieve this enhancement before encountering a stronger monster. Since we probably won’t be using a bow in the future.
Heck, Ciel probably won’t be using the sword much after we leave the academy. After all, she’s undoubtedly much better off using sorcery.
While I was musing to myself, the goblin continued to draw nearer, and as it reached close enough that the two should be able to sense it, Belltina began acting restlessly. She turned to Ciel and Palra as if wanting to say something.
Noticing this, Palra asked, 「Bell, what’s wrong?」 to which Belltina reacted with joy before remembering the situation and hurriedly explaining. While this went on, Ciel had retrieved her rapier.
「T-there’s a small—a small person-like thing coming towards us…!」
「It’s seems like you’ve noticed it.」
「Eh? Eh? …Ah!」
Palra could not immediately understand the situation from Belltina’s words alone, so by the time she realized what was going on, the goblin was just around the corner. However, since it was still apparently possible to give simple instructions, Ciel said, 「I’ll keep it occupied, so please stay back and bring it down.」
It would have been impressive if the two immediately prepared for combat, but they seem to be far from that level yet, as they were overwhelmed and frozen in place. As this happened, a small green humanoid—the goblin appeared.
*Ghgyagyagya!*—With a grating cry, it ran towards Ciel as it saw our group. In its hand was a thick piece of wood that served as a simple club, and as it approached us with moderately fast steps, it then swung the club down.
Ciel meets the swung club with her rapier before smoothly pulling back, successfully parrying it. It’s interesting how it appeared as if the club was pulled aside by Ciel’s sword. There was barely any impact felt, and the fact that she can achieve this even without access to the full power of the Dance Princess is impressive.
As its club slammed to the ground, the goblin was dumbfounded and couldn’t understand what just occurred for a moment, but it soon realized what happened, resulting in it wildly swinging its club enraged. Ciel avoided it with a single step while making distance from the two at the back.
The two seem to have finally processed the situation and began preparing to attack.
It felt like they were bewitched by Ciel’s movements for a moment, but let’s just ignore that. Perhaps, with Ciel’s beauty, it was simply unavoidable.
While she wasn’t making a full effort, the two were lucky enough to see Ciel’s beautiful gestures, so I guess I’ll go with that reasoning.
As though dancing with the goblin, Ciel light-footedly dodged, parried, and occasionally countered its attacks without any difficulty. She can be left on her own, since even in the unlikely event that the goblin hits her, the damage still won’t reach her.
On the other hand, the two back-liners don’t share the same composure; Palra has her bow drawn yet is unable to take a good aim at the moving goblin, while Belltina is slow with her spellcasting, and so far, every spell she’d launched had flown off into the distant horizon without any sign of hitting its mark. And honestly, her spells have low attack power, so even if it connects, it might not be able to defeat the goblin. After observing for a while, I don’t see this ending anytime soon, so I decided to call to Ciel.
『Ciel, could you limit the goblin’s movements a bit more?』
『I can, but… It’s hard to aim, I see.』
After a quick glance behind, Ciel understood the situation and altered her behavior. Earlier, she was focused on evasion, but now she’s being more aggressive to keep the enemy in place. Hitting the raised club before it was swung, slashing at the ground ahead when the goblin attempts to move; while it may only be effective due to the enemy being a goblin, she successfully minimized the enemy’s movement.
And that ends this update! A wild wind goblin appeared! The party fell into confusion!
We got our first team battle in a long long while. The fact that Ciel didn’t realize that she needed to limit her movements for Palra and Bell is a nice touch. While Ciel have been up close in battle in several occasions, it has never hindered her or Ain’s aim because they share a line of sight. On the other hand, we can also see the difference in experience (and temperment) between Palra and Bell. While Bell is shooting off and missing spells in a panic, Palra, while also just as panicked, instead saves her aim for a clean hit (which she seems to know can’t land yet), which still results in her being unable to do substantial damage. Now that Ciel has gone offensive to pin it down, let’s see how our little goblin will fare in the next chapter.
Now then, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Please feel free to comment. Stay healthy, stay safe, and have a nice day~!
