「Miss Ailneige, are you aware of the appraisal Job line?」
Steeling her resolve, Princess Leshimiiya posed this question, but that’s no good.
She will likely corner Ailneige with the next one.
After all, the princess probably cares little for the actual response.
If she asks how I am capable of obstructing an appraisal, it will be naturally difficult to feign ignorance.
Even if we hypothetically establish that we are in possession of an anti-appraisal sorceric tool that Ailneige is supposedly unaware of, it’s obvious she will then question Ailneige’s background.
Well, I wouldn’t particularly mind that. I am Fiiyanamia’s daughter, and if she forces this answer out of me, I can just press her to make accommodations as a member of Ausente royalty.
I would rather not rely on Mother’s influence, but it would be foolish not to make use of what is available.
Nonetheless, I’ll do my best to adhere to our original plan.
For a peaceful academy life for us and to ease the princess’ concerns.
「Yes, I am aware of the appraisal Jobs. But Princess Leshimiiya, I simply wish to have a peaceful life at the academy.」
「……」
「It’s best not to unwittingly provoke docile dragons.」
As Princess Leshimiiya seemed to contemplate my words, I continued with another statement.
I’m essentially providing her with the answer at this point, so I’ll leave the rest to her judgment. If she decides to maintain a surface-level relationship and pretend nothing happened, that’s good.
However, if she insists on pressing for a verbal confirmation, I’ll execute the previously mentioned plan.
And if, by chance, we’re attacked, I’ll simply have Ciel dance to her heart’s content before we return to Central.
「I am not very educated about dragons, but do they attack without any prior warning?」
「Under normal circumstances, I believe they would at least give a word of caution.」
It seems the princess has decided to act as though nothing happened, so I responded in kind.
Her main concern seems to be how we would react if someone from Ausente showed us disrespect. Specifically, she seems to want assurance that irreverence directed toward me without the awareness that I am a foreign noble—which I am not—would not escalate into an international incident.
It will depend on the situation, but I intend to reveal our status before we will need to leverage our position as Fiiyanamia’s daughter.
When we do reach the point of revealing it, that would likely mean we already have someone we’re not happy with, but if they back down upon disclosure, we won’t crush them completely.
Even if they don’t, I intend to handle it as a personal matter.
For that reason, under normal circumstances, the princess’ concerns should not come to fruition.
「Thank you very much, Miss Ailneige. I pray from the bottom of my heart that your stay in Ausente shall be a peaceful one.」
「Likewise, I hope you don’t overexert yourself, princess.」
As we finished exchanging pleasantries with surface-level smiles, the music came to an end.
The timing could have been a coincidence, but the princess might have instructed this.
From what I sensed through detection, the princess made some sort of finger gesture outside my line of sight, so that’s probably the case.
Good riddance. It’s hard to believe she’s only 12 years old. I guess it must be tough being royalty.
If I were in her position, I’m certain that I’d have been ill from stress at this point.
As I basked in gratitude for my current circumstances, the entrance exam finally drew to a close.
◇◇◇
「Still, what was Leshimiiya doing back then?」
『You should probably at least refer to her by her title.』
「What was Princess Leshimiiya doing back then?」
「From what I can understand, I believe that she was probing whether you plan to cause harm towards Ausente.」
With the entrance exam finished, we returned to the inn room, where Ciel posed Mia this question. As for why she didn’t ask me instead, it’s part of her communication practice.
Informing Mia about what happens when we act separately has become a sort of “homework” for Ciel.
Besides, Mia is undoubtedly more knowledgeable about the behind-the-scenes workings of governance than I am, so she’s a far better choice for this sort of topic.
「I’m not really thinking of doing anything to Ausente.」
「I know that very well. You don’t have any special interest in Ausente, do you, Lady Cielmer?」
「Yeah, I don’t really care about what happens in Ausente. Though if anything gets in our way, I might at least do something about it.
However, if the fourth prince what’s-his-name tries something with Ain again, that’s a different story.」
「When that does happen, please feel free to act as you wish within your area of safety.
You are already being quite tolerant as it is, so I believe there’s no need for further consideration.」
How do I put this? Things are starting to feel a bit dangerous.
Personally, as the one most affected by the whole fiasco, I feel like we could just let them be. Still, I’d prefer they don’t underestimate us, and if Ciel were in my position instead, I’d probably march into the royal palace alone, so I’ll keep my silence.
「Why is that?」
「It’s because Ausente does not have much information regarding Lady Ail.」
「If people aren’t acting suspiciously, shouldn’t they just leave them alone?」
「Unlike in our case, they cannot afford to be reactive. They must account for the possibility that some individuals, even those who appear docile, could go on a rampage at any moment.
So there is a need to identify people their nation must at least remain cautious of.」
「And because they have to be cautious, they keep observers nearby to arrest those individuals if necessary… right?」
「That’s right.」
「Can Ausente even arrest us?」
「Well, that’s precisely the sort of information they would prefer to have.」
「I guess it’s tough being a princess.」
Ciel muttered indifferently, prompting Mia to give a wry smile.
Ciel is, in a sense, practically the princess of Central, so I can understand Mia’s reaction.
Still, it’s more of a symbolic post in our case, and we have no sovereign responsibilities. To begin with, Central isn’t even a country, and the people living there, excluding the manor’s residents, are either freeloaders or guests.
In other words, we have freedom.
Princess Leshimiiya mentioned that she has some degree of freedom for a member of the royal family.
The fact that she uses that freedom to aid Ausente might be due to her being a pure-blooded royal.
And that ends this part! I probably won’t have much to say here, but anyway!
Despite being more aggressive this time, the princess consistently shows the wisdom to not F around hard enough to find out. Bless her soul. Hopefully her efforts won’t be wasted… Meanwhile, I do like how Mia has become our tome of knowledge: noble edition for Ciel to learn from. After all, Ain is actually not all-knowing. Also, the Ain did a good job of being threatening, lol. Really channeling some Yoshikage Kira energy there. Once again (again), I wish you all a Happy New Year!
Now then, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Please feel free to comment. Stay healthy, stay safe, and have a nice day~!
