“…So, the breath can only be used once per day. I’m not sure how this will develop going forward, though.”
“I get the feeling Ms. Momo’s magic power just isn’t keeping up. With growth, she might be able to fire off multiple shots.”
“I’m not happy about that!”
“If you’re going to regret it, then don’t go swallowing dragon gems in the first place.”

— The next day, at the church.

When we tested Momo’s breath again, we confirmed that she could expel black flames without issue.

It seemed that the mechanism required a full day to recharge magic power for a single shot. That would explain why there had been no noticeable changes on the first day.

“The strength of the curse is the same as yesterday. As long as you suppress the properties of the flame, safety won’t be an issue.”
“Is that even possible?”
“A breath attack is a mass of magic power. It can change as much as you want it to. Right now, it’s just being influenced by Claxton’s nature.”
“Then I want to make it so food comes out instead!”
“You’re free to aim for that, but from the outside, it’ll just look like vomit, you know?”
“Ugh, that’s a tough one…!”

While I was still worrying about the effects of absorbing the dragon gem, the person in question was surprisingly carefree.

Still, it was far better than her sinking into depression. If she ever managed to make that ridiculous idea a reality, I just hoped she’d do it somewhere out of my sight.

“More importantly, is it impossible to meet with Axio? I thought the Saint’s request would get through…”
“I’m sorry. It seems things are quite hectic on their end as well.”
“No openings to slip in, huh? Well, it can’t be helped.”

With everything happening in Aldebaran, he was likely busy with the reconstruction efforts.

I had hoped to tell him about Momo in person, but I’ll send him a magic word message when I get the chance.

“Then let’s set out while the sun is still high. Since this is a personal matter, we can’t use the airship,” the Saint said.
“What are you talking about? I already got permission from your overseer for its use.”
“…What did you just say?”

The Saint, who had been so visibly excited that you could practically see the beaming effect above her head, suddenly froze in place.

Like a machine that had just run out of oil, she slowly turned toward me with stiff, jerky movements.

“I’m responsible for looking after their precious Saint, so I made sure to talk to your overseer and get proper permission. Oh, and I also have a letter. Momo.”
“Yes! I’ll read it right away! ‘My lady, you’re not seriously thinking of running away during such a ridiculously busy time, are you? Healing the injured isn’t the only duty of a Saint. First of all, you have absolutely no sense of your noble status, and the previous Saint also…’
“Aaahhh, I can’t hear you, I can’t hear you! I didn’t hear a thing, so it doesn’t count! I know nothing at all!”
“Regressing to a toddler won’t help. Even if you don’t hear it, it’s all recorded in writing.”

As expected of her overseer, she had completely anticipated the Saint’s childish reaction.

The letter mostly contained a flood of nagging, about twenty times longer than the actual instruction: “If you’re going to Rigel, make sure to greet the magic church there.”

The only reason she was granted permission to use the airship was because she was officially leaving the city on business. I had nothing but gratitude for that halfling. Thanks to her, I also got to witness a rare expression on the Saint’s face.

“You’re ready too, right? We can’t keep the pilots waiting. Let’s hurry up and head to Rigel.”
“Noooo waaaay…!”
“Wow, Ms. Roche is stuck to the floor like an octopus.”

“Why is it that the higher one’s position, the further they get from the actual field…?”
“You really hate dealing with rich people that much?”
“I’d rather have all the money spent on banquets and hospitality redirected to medical expenses.”
“You’re the real deal, huh.”

Even after the airship had taken off, the Saint remained sulking on the deck, sitting there with a pout.

Judging from her complaints, she probably couldn’t find any meaning in work that strayed from Ascles’ teachings.

From a different perspective, her stance could be seen as sincere, but as someone in a leadership position, it was an unfit way of thinking.

“You don’t look very lively, Ms. Roche.”
“Leave her be. She’s still someone who stood at the top of Ascles. If push comes to shove, she’ll get moving.”
“Hehehe, how naive, Ms. Laika. It was always Astera’s job to lift me up when I refused to budge. And now, she has entrusted me to you two… Do you understand what that means?”
“If you’re aware of it, then fix yourself, you useless Saint.”
“If I could do that, I wouldn’t be struggling.”

I could almost feel the sheer exhaustion of her overseer. Was it a requirement for modern Saints to be this much of a handful?

…Then again, thinking back, Saints of the past weren’t all that different, were they?

“By the way, Ms. Roche, what kind of city is Rigel? I asked my master, but she wouldn’t tell me anything.”
“You’d be better off asking the Saint than relying on my outdated knowledge. Go ahead, explain it to her.”
“Oh my, is that so? Then allow me to take on the honor of providing a proper explanation.”
“Yaaay, clap clap clap.”

“Rigel is an integrated magical city, thriving in the research of magic, magecraft, and magitech. Scholars from all over the world gather there to acquire knowledge, constantly striving to push beyond the cutting edge of magic. Day and night, wizards and sorcerers hone their skills in pursuit of innovation.”

Hearing it called an ‘integrated magical city’ nearly made me burst out laughing.

That place—once on the verge of collapse due to a tyrant king’s oppressive rule and its extreme wealth disparity—had certainly come a long way.

“Whoaa, that sounds amazing!”
“Yes, it’s a researcher’s paradise, equipped with everything from cutting-edge research facilities to top-tier educational institutions. I’m sure there will be someone there who can study your dragon gem as well.”
“Hmph, they really have everything, huh? So, how long will it take to get there by airship?”

“Let’s see… If everything goes as planned, we should arrive in Rigel in about three days.”
“That’s faster than I expected. I guess air routes really cut down the time.”
“Yes, since we’ll be flying over the sea, the travel time should be significantly reduced.”
“…What did you just say?”

Over the sea. In other words, right through the domain of that ghost ship.

Even if we were flying, that was still not a place I’d casually waltz into.

“It’ll be fine. Even though we didn’t completely eliminate it back in Aldebaran, we did deal it a significant blow. It’s unlikely to become active again so soon.”
“That’s just an assumption. What’s the plan if we do get attacked?”
“Hehehe, as long as you and I are here, there’s nothing to worry about.”
“Don’t put that much faith in your passengers!”

I had plenty of complaints, but at this point, it wasn’t as if I could just get off the ship.

In the end, though, our three-day journey passed without encountering any major troubles—no ghost ship, no wyverns, nothing.

The real problems, however, began after we arrived in Rigel.
