“So, Master, how are we going to find that old man!?”
“For now, we head to the scene. If magic was used, there should be some clue left behind.”
Honestly, I hadn’t thought of any concrete plan. But sitting around doing nothing wouldn’t change anything— we had to move.
“Saint, I’m leaving Plerion to you. Try to keep him alive, if you can.”
“Leave it to me. As long as I draw breath, I’ll heal him whatever it takes.”
“That’s exactly what makes you terrifying. Can he be moved? I feel bad for the magicologists to keep using their workshop like this.”
“Bah, don’t worry about it. Take this with ya while you’re at it.”
As we tended to Plerion, Arnitta, who had stepped into another room to stay out of the way, popped his head in. Beside him stood a golem, moving on all fours like a dog— an unusually animal-like design.
“Whoa, it’s so cute!”
“Ohoho, glad ya like it. This one’s a prototype animal-type golem, with a sense of smell as sharp as a dog’s.”
“Beast-type, huh? The difficulty of shaping them skyrockets once you deviate from humanoid forms.”
“Wahaha! That’s old news. Still plenty of hurdles left, but magitech is makin’ steady progress.”
“Woof!”
“Aww, good boy. Your name is Daigorou from now on!”
“Don’t just name it without asking. It probably wasn’t cheap to make— are you really okay with this?”
“Bah, losin’ a life in my workshop would leave a worse aftertaste. Besides, Daigorou there should be able to track the culprit’s scent.”
“Are we really sticking with that name…?”
“Woof!”
The golem even wagged its tail, looking oddly pleased. Golems shouldn’t have emotions… though, considering the exception we had around, maybe I shouldn’t be surprised.
“Saint, what happened to your golem? Isn’t it dangerous for you to be acting alone?”
“I’ve assigned it another task for now. Besides, I have Mr. Kagase here with me.”
“Having a saint as personal bodyguard— that’s quite the luxury. Can I count him as part of our fighting force?”
“Of course. I can’t let only the cute girls take all the risks, after all.”
“I see. Then work hard as our meat shield.”
“Wait, did that not trigger a death flag? Huh, you’re more cautious than I thought… And I can’t see your status at all…”
He was muttering something incomprehensible again. Could we really trust this guy?
“We’ll move as fast as we can, so hang in there, Plerion. Momo, lead the way.”
“Okay! Daigorou, carry Master and follow me!”
“Woof!”
“…Well, I can’t deny it makes sense, but…”
Momo lifted me up and set me on the golem’s back before taking off at a run.
This setup meant even my stamina could keep up, but the sight of a girl dashing through town atop a dog-shaped golem was apparently an amusing spectacle. The curious stares of passersby made the whole situation increasingly uncomfortable.

“This is the place. Plerion and Konis were cornered by that suspicious man, so I reflexively punched him.”
“What a shame. If you’d finished him off right there, we wouldn’t be in this mess.”
“Wait, am I the only normal one here?”
“Woof.”
The alleyway Momo led us to was steeped in a sinister magic. The malice of the caster was clear, thick enough to cling to the air. It was ironic, though— the curse barely affected Momo at all.
“What do you think, Master? Do you sense anything?”
“…No luck. The magic residue is heavy, but in this city, it blends with countless other magical traces. Tracking it would be difficult.”
If this were another town, I might’ve been able to follow the lingering magic. But in Rigel, the air was saturated with countless magical signatures, making it nearly impossible for me to isolate one individual’s presence.
“So, Saint, are you just going to stand back there, or do you actually have a plan?”
“Ah, hang on. Appraisal, Appraisal… Appraisal… Got it. This must be the residual magic. Okay, now I’ll copy the data and transfer it to Daigorou…”
“Woof…! Woof woof!”
The young man made a gesture as if interacting with something invisible, and the golem sitting beside him suddenly trembled.
The golem twitched its nose, sniffing the air, then bolted off without hesitation— as if it had caught the trail of the lingering magic.
“D-Daigorou! What’s wrong? Why are you running all of a sudden?”
“I adjusted Daigorou to track the residual magic from the site through scent. Right now, he can follow the culprit directly.”
“Hoh, so even though you’re a saint, you know magitech too?”
“Nah, this is more from my experience working as a systems engineer… Ah, to put it simply, it’s Amatsugami magic. It’s a way to translate the technology Outlanders originally had into a form that works in this world.”
“I don’t really get it, but it sounds amazing! Thank you, Mr. Kagase!”
“Don’t mention it. I can’t exactly overlook Outlander Killers, given my position. Anyway, make sure you don’t lose sight of Daigorou. At this rate, we’ll find the culprit in no time.”
“That’s good news, but… there’s one problem.”
“Huh? Did we miss something?”
“If the golem leaves us behind… with my stamina, I won’t be able to keep up… Ugh…”
“M-Master!?”
Roughly an hour later, with me collapsed from exhaustion and slung over Momo’s back, we finally found what appeared to be the spellcaster’s hideout.
