“Could it be that the reason you got imprisoned was… woman trouble, Master?”
“How many relationships would I need to juggle to end up locked away for a thousand years?”
It took thirty minutes to break the iron shackle on my arm.
It wasn’t as strong as those prison chains, but it still had a mechanism that disrupted magic power. Stell really had learned how to counteract wizards properly.
“Sniff… Teach… are you going to disappear again…?”
“Oh no, Master made a girl cry~.”
“You’re able to joke after what just happened, Momo?”
Stell covered her face with her hands, pretending to sob. But not a single tear fell from her eyes. On the contrary, her gaze held the sharp determination of a predator who hadn’t given up yet. Was I really going to have to teach in the same classroom as her?
“Ah, my apologies for the wait, you two… Oh? Lady Stell, wasn’t your meeting scheduled for a little later?”
“Teach was coming… so I came early.”
“I see, I see. You are quite admired, Lady Laika.”
“Haha… can I go home now?”
Finally, the Guildmaster returned, but there was no way it actually took thirty minutes to register us with the golems. There was a ninety percent chance he and Axio were in on this together. The smug look on his face said it all.
“Master, at this point, you should just give up. Stell probably won’t let you escape.”
“Staaare…”
The pressure from the gaze on my back felt strong enough to burn a hole right through me. If I tried to run now, I had a feeling the full power of the Umravolf family would be unleashed to hunt me down.
“I guess I have no choice but to brace myself… But Stell, the handcuffs are a hassle to unlock, so stop using them from now on.”
“I understand… I’ll work harder…”
“Don’t! If you’re going to the academy, focus on improving your magecraft skills.”
“Mm.”
Stell stretched out her hand. But this time, it didn’t seem like she was offering a handshake. After a few seconds of staring at it, a tiny water ball was formed at her fingertip, rolling across her skin.
This was the challenge I had assigned to Stell back in Aldebaran. And this time, it was more difficult than what I had shown her back then.
“…I wasn’t lying about coming here to learn.”
“Oh? You really have a good sense for it. You also have a high potential for water magecraft. But it seems you’re still structuring the ball out of habit. You should work on that a little more…”
“Master, you tend to speak really fast when it’s about magecraft.”
“What are you saying, Momo?”
But I couldn’t hide the joy I felt. It was a small, fleeting sense of satisfaction that she remembered and was able to carry out the task I had given her. As a tutor, even for a brief time, it made me feel fulfilled.
Come to think of it, this mission felt like a continuation of my role as her tutor, which had been cut short back then.
“Lady Stell, I will now show Lady Laika around the academy. Would you care to join us?”
“Mm… I’ll go…”
“Hmm, this is a problem. In that case, should I carry Master or Stell?”
“Don’t carry me. I can walk on my own, and don’t underestimate me.”
✦✧✦✧✦
“Pant…! Pant…!!”
“Master, aren’t you pushing it because Stell’s here?”
“N-No problem… This is nothing…!”
It had probably been five hours of walking by now, and even I, as strong as I am, was nearing my physical limits.
Occasionally, Momo would say something terrifying like, “It’s only been 10 minutes,” but I was sure that was just a hallucination. I didn’t hear anything.
“Teach… What if you fly…?”
“I can’t waste magic power on something like that right now! I’m walking, that’s what I’m doing!!”
“Sure, sure, it’s just stubbornness. But before you collapse, let yourself be carried, okay?”
“Stop it! Let me go! I can still go on!!”
“Everyone, we’ve arrived! This is our academy’s proud large library!”
While being carried by Momo, we easily arrived at our destination.
The library, standing firmly on the academy grounds, was even bigger than the Aldebaran guild, just by estimation. The doors, windows, and other potential points of entry were all fortified with some form of defense spells, possibly making it more secure than a poorly constructed fortress.
“Three… no, at least four layers, huh? If it’s a low-ranking wizard, just touching it in an attempt to dispel it would turn them to charcoal.”
“……Impressive. To be able to see through it so easily at a glance.”
“One has to be capable of this much. After all, there have been many deadly situations where this was required. By the way, is there really that much valuable material inside?”
“Yes, knowledge is treasure, after all. Of course, we’ve made sure that the security spells don’t react to you.”
“Good, I appreciate that. So we can go inside?”
“Of course, would you like to borrow a few books while you’re at it?”
“We’ll decide after browsing. Let’s go, Momo.”
“Hmm, this is one of those places where my legs feel heavier…”
Reluctantly, Momo was nudged along, and as the heavy door was opened, the smell of paper and an overwhelming number of bookshelves greeted us.
The library in Aldebaran was large, but this one was on a whole different scale. Using all of the second and third floors, it was as though bookshelves were packed in wherever they could fit.
The collection was impressive, ranging from children’s fairy tales and myths to papers analyzing advanced magecraft.
“This… this is more than I expected. I wonder if I can take a few of these bookshelves with me.”
“That would mean I’d be the one carrying them, right?”
“You’d manage just fine. Well, 30% of that is a joke, but it’s a shame, I’ll stick to borrowing just a few books.”
“Teach… you look like you’re having fun…”
I couldn’t help but be drawn to the multitude of books; choosing would take more than just a day or two.
Ah, even the idea of carrying them out felt like too much work. Maybe I should just live here during the term?
“…Teach, I want to learn ice magecraft… are there any good books?”
“Hmm, ice magecraft is a lot harder than manipulating water orbs, you know? But with your level, well…”
“Master, is there a spell that can make food appear in abundance?”
“Haha, don’t say such nonsense while you’re still asleep.”
We had meant to get a tour, but we ended up spending quite a bit of time in the library.
I got so absorbed in the books that I only came to my senses when the bell rang, signaling noon.
