[Vol 3] Chapter 1: My First Kiss?!

Sylvia “I am a Spirit remember? I am sensitive when it comes to soul-related things, I can still feel the soul of the wild boar, although it is very weak at the moment. I can somehow recover the soul of the wild boar, however I cannot heal the body. If the soul do not have a body to return to, then it is pointless! That’s why… please, heal the wild boar, Sheena~!”

I tried to convince Sheena that there was still hope for the wild boar, however she was a little uncertain, “Can you…… really do something like that?”

For just a brief moment, anxiety took over me and revealed itself on my face, “O-ooh!! Of course I can! Trust me!” Continue reading [Vol 3] Chapter 1: My First Kiss?!

[Vol 3] Prologue: The Power of Spirits

Sylvia Although the riders were confused, they still executed their task flawlessly and subjugated the wild beasts. They were the Elite Gryphon Squad after all, a pack of wild beasts like these were no match for them.

On the other hand…… Sheena had finally cured most of my serious wounds, the lighter ones were patched up by bandages with help of Caelum.  Guess he was not an Adventurer for nothing, he had learned some First Aid skill. Zain had not suffered any heavy injuries so he rejected the offer to receive any treatment.

And that got me really curious so I asked, “Zain…… What was the reason that made you surrender? From my point of view, you still had more than enough stamina and strength, while I was totally exhausted. You were the clear winner here.”

Zain looked at me grumpily, “Do you really need to ask? The answer was obvious!”

“Well…… ehehehe~ I just wanted to confirm is all.” I scratched my head with the right hand and closed my left eye while saying that in a cheerful way. So it was that as I suspected? I am not sure if he was being honorable, or fear that my companion might join the fray if he continued his assault. However, the reason he surrendered, it was most likely because of that. It can’t be anything else other than that!

The reason was simple, he lost the moment he asked his companion to help him. He could have just ignored his pride and attacked me on the spot, but he didn’t do it. That was definitely the best decision, because Sheena and the others definitely won’t stand by idly and watch if he had continued his assault.

Caelum lent me a hand and lifted me off the ground, then he asked with a somewhat anxious expression, “Are you sure you can move around already?”

“No problemo! Don’t worry about me~ The healing spells did wonder on me!” I lifted my right arm, flexed my muscles, and then I tapped my muscles twice to show that I am fine, only if I had any muscles at all, that is.

“Then let’s go… we should go and help the other two immediately.” Albert, who had been standing guard at the side joined the conversation and urged us to go support the other two riders.

However, Caelum just waved his hand lightly and said nonchalantly, “Ah… don’t worry about those two. They are strong, there shouldn’t be any monsters in this forest that are capable of downing th–!”

Before Caelum finished his sentence, he stopped abruptly and started pondering for a while. After that he nodded his head and said, “You are right, we should at least go check out the situation as soon as possible. Not that I do not trust my companion, however I fear that something unexpected might happen.”

Everyone nodded in response and followed Caelum through the woods. By the time we arrived on the spot, the fight was already over as suspected. The village girl was hugging a gigantic boar and crying, the riders were standing behind the girl with solemn expression, and they were surrounded by a sea of corpse.

They were the corpse of the wild beasts, and the smell of blood drifted in the air. It was a nauseating sight, the ground was dyed red by the blood of the wild beasts, and their entrails were out in the open. I almost throw up upon seeing this scene. However, the corpse of the wild beasts were gone in a moment later. It was as if they just suddenly vanished in thin air.

That must be one of the functions of the Guild Card mentioned by Mister Milton earlier; All the monsters or bandits killed or subdued by the Adventurers will be teleported to the administration hall for assessment.

Although seeing it in person and hearing it were two different things. If not for the ground which had been stained red by the blood, I would have thought that was just an illusion. I’m really weak against gore, but I guess living in this world means I will eventually have to get used to it and kill someone with my own hands one of these day.

When the village girl who had been clinging to the wild boar noticed us, she immediately rushed over and kneel before Sheena with tears on her face. She grabbed Sheena’s hands and desperately beseech her to heal the wild boar, “Miss Healer! Please… please… I beg you, please save my friend! Please… sniffs, sniffs.”

Sheena was at a loss for words as she turned her sights to the two riders beside the wild boar, they just shook their head slowly. Sheena understood immediately what they implied by that gesture, so she shouldn’t make a promise blindly. After all, it was impossible to revive the dead.

Sheena was tongue-tied and doesn’t know how she should respond at times like this, she could only mutter a few words, “Ah… um… You see… I, uh… ”

However, at time this time, Sylvidia’s voice suddenly popped up in my head, “Master, that boar is not dead yet. It is faint but I can still feel its soul and its will to survive, it is still possible to save it now!”

“What…? But how? Healing magic only affects external wounds right?” I asked Sylvidia via telepathy.

“Hmp hm hm~ And that’s where the power of the spirit comes into play. We spirits have the ability to share our power with another individual or object. With this power, we should be able to transfer some of our soul energy to the boar.” Sylvidia explained proudly as a senior Spirit Race.

I was a bit worried when I heard we will be transferring our soul energy, “Whaaaaat? Transfer our soul energy? That sounds risky!”

“Hehehe~ Don’t be such a spoilsports, It’s nothing bad, as long as you don’t go over your limit. Your soul energy will naturally recover and it will become purer and more condensed than ever.” Sylvidia reassured me that it was nothing dangerous as long as I do not overdo it.

Ah… if I think of it like blood donation, then it doesn’t sound so scary anymore. Not only can we help others with our blood, we also gain some health benefits for donating our blood. Such as reduced risks of heart disease, better blood flow, and reduce the harmful iron minerals in our body.

When I made up my mind, I tried to convince Sheena to heal the wild boar, since I cannot heal the physical wounds after all, “Sheena… let’s do it, I will help too!”

“Wha? What are you saying? That boar is–” I cut off Sheena’s words before she could finish her sentence, “Alive! That boar is still alive!”

Sheena and the rest of the group looked at me dumbfoundedly. From their point of view, that boar looked as good as dead, so how was it that I was able to claim that it was still alive? I tried to explain to them as briefly as possible since we do not have the time to waste, the life of the wild boar is chipping away as time goes on.

“I am a Spirit remember? I am sensitive when it comes to soul-related things, I can still feel the soul of the wild boar, although it is very weak at the moment. I can somehow recover the soul of the wild boar, however I cannot heal the body. If the soul do not have a body to return to, then it is pointless! That’s why… please, heal the wild boar, Sheena~!”

Author’s Note:

Well, another unexpected situation occurred as I was writing this chapter. I just got another new idea. I was actually thinking of ending Volume 2 by sending them back to the Academy. However, that seems like it will take a little more time… that’s why I’m ending Volume 2 with the last chapter!

[Vol 2] Chapter 21: The Aftermath

Sylvia “We of the Black Goblin Tribe, Zain, Fiore, and Giga, recognized and swear our eternal loyalty to the Great Master before us!” Just as soon as Zain finished the pledge of loyalty, from the forehead of the other two Goblins, Fiore and Giga, a familiar magic circle with complex design emerged.

Following that, the surrounding was lit up by the blinding light of the magic circles. Then the complex magic circles shoot out from their foreheads and embedded itself on my forehead. Similarly, the light dimmed after a while and our contract were sealed.

[Vol 2] Chapter 20: The Goblin Trio

Sylvia As soon as the ritual was completed, the black Goblin talked to me via telepathy and demanded for something. If I failed to comply, he will take my life!

“Pfft…… Hahahahaha! You sneaky little vermin! You initiated the Bond of Equal first before I could perform the ritual myself to corner me right? To prevent me from using my absolute orders to make you submit to me?” I was still kneeling on the ground with both knees as I said that out loud.

However, the language was automatically translated in the Goblin’s head so he could understand what I was saying. Therefore, he became more cautious and adopted a defensive posture. Despite that, his expectation was betrayed by what I was about to say.

[Vol 2] Chapter 19: Quality of the Strongest

Sylvia “Huff~ Huff~ Huff~” I was breathing heavily as I desperately forced myself to stand upright. However, there was a sense of dissatisfaction in the depths of my heart.

Sylvidia, who had picked up my dissatisfaction voiced out her concern, “What’s wrong? You fought well, what is there to be dissatisfied about?”

“I don’t like it…… that Goblin is obviously in a better state than me, I can barely stand as it is, if he decides to continue, I will really be down for the count. Am I so weak that I can’t even beat a single Goblin?!” I gritted my teeth and voiced out my complain via telepathy.

[Vol 2] Chapter 18: The Conclusion

Sylvia When Sheena was running towards me at full throttle and shouting my name incessantly, I was swung overhead by the black Goblin and is currently lying on the ground shamefully. I spat out a mouthful of blood due to the heavy impact from the overhead swing.

The fight was still ongoing wildly! I didn’t have the luxury to pay attention to the conflict between Sheena and Caelum. Thanks to the tough body of a beast-kin, I was still barely hanging on. However, if I took another heavy blow like this, my life force will surely hit the critical point and got send back to the Guild Hall.

The illusory HP bar displayed at one corner of my vision was indicating that my life was in a peril. However, I know that I could still handle one of those heavy blow. As long as nothing unexpected happen and drained the rest of my life force, I should still be able to live and fight for another day.

The black Goblin didn’t give me any room to breath, as soon as I hit the ground, he twisted his entire body around to gather strength in his right fist and send a powerful blow towards my face.

I hastily rolled to the right side and avoided the punch by a hair’s breadth. That was way too dangerous! This black Goblin was really going for the kill, he’s been aiming at my vital spots since the start of the fight.

I continued to roll around to gain some distant between us and got up of my feet shortly after. In the corner of my vision, I saw Sheena finally got past Caelum so I quickly took a deep breath and shouted at the top of my lungs, “SHEENAAA!!!!! EVEN IF IT’S YOU, I DEFINITELY WON’T FORGIVE YOU IF YOU INTERFERED MY FIGHT!!!”

Sheena was startled by my sudden outrage and stopped in her tracks, even the black Goblin was momentarily startled and stopped attacking. I didn’t miss this chance and lunged towards the black Goblin at my top speed. I gathered every last ounce of the strength into my right arm and delivered a really powerful blow.

The black Goblin regained his composure as he saw me quickly approaching, the crimson tattoos all over his body started to glow dimly and he gathered all the Magic Power into his right arm. All of a sudden, a flame appeared out of nowhere and enveloped the black Goblin’s right hand.

The both of us let out a battle howl as we delivered our last attack with all our strength behind it, “RAAGHHHHHH!!!”

“BANG!!”

As our fists met, there was a huge explosive bang and a strong gust of wind was generated from the impact between our fists. The leaves and twigs on the ground in the proximity were blown away by the gust. Even Sheena and the rest who were watching from a distant could feel the gust brushing against their skin.

“Hot! Hot!! Hot!!!” My fist that was clashing against the black Goblin’s fiery fist was being scorched. However, I cannot back down even if my right hand turned into charcoal. If I back down now, everything will be lost; my life, my ambition, my pride, everything!

“Hyaaaaah~!” I stood my ground and gathered even more strength into my fist. I do not know where the strength came from but I have heard that when human was on the brink of death, they could draw out their latent potential and go over their limits. This must be a skill called ‘Overlimit’, it is a skill that allows the user to break the limits imposed on their mortal body, however it would put a huge strain on the body so it is not recommended to use it for prolonged period of time.

Just at that time, the rune on my right hand started to glow and I could feel streams of air circulating around my right fist. The streams of air enveloped my right fist and circulating around it. I could see the streams of air so clearly, it was as if my right fist was an eye of the tornado.

Just as these thoughts came to my mind, I got slightly excited and my body moved automatically by my childish impulse. With all my remaining strength, I successfully pushed my body forward. With that, I gained the upper hand and was able to push the black Goblin backwards.

Then I delivered the finishing blow while shouting the makeshift skill name involuntarily, “Tornado Punch!!!!!!”

Just as I shouted the skill name, I changed the trajectory of my punch towards the sky, then the streams of air around my fist extended towards the sky and formed a huge tornado. The black Goblin was swept-up by the tornado and blown to the sky.

The tornado subsided after a while and the black Goblin that had been swept-up by the tornado started falling from the sky.

“Waaaaaaaaghhh!! Tagaan ghaan! (Save me!)” As the black Goblin was falling, he was pleading for help. The female Goblin ran left and right frantically in an attempt to catch the black Goblin as he fell towards the ground.

“Glomps! Gorororororo! Crash!!”

As the black Goblin fell towards the ground, the female Goblin pounced on him and caught him before he hit the ground. Then they got tangled up as they rolled away like a ball before they crashed against the huge tree trunk.

I was still standing in the same position with my fist facing the sky unsteadily. The Goblin trio on the other hand, were lying on the ground shamefully. Our position had reversed, it was a complete victory! Or so I had hoped but the other male Goblin got up around this time and surveyed the surrounding.

When he saw his teammate were lying on the ground with injuries all over their body, he got furious and directed his attention to me, who was in the middle of the field. Just when he was about to dash towards my location, the black Goblin got up and shouted at him, “Tac druul, Giga! Ar’t or kuun! (Stand down, Giga! It’s our loss!)”

The male Goblin turned his attention to the black Goblin in confusion, “Dar druun o ghaac ar’t or kuun? (What do you mean it’s our loss?)”

“A gharthaan a draach der den duulkac, tac druul! Or agaan o huuc duun dreruukaan ghaan? (I made a deal with this woman, stand down! Or are you going to disobey me?)” The black Goblin glared at the male Goblin intently.

“A duuch khraagaar dragaan! (I would never dare!)” A cold sweat  broke out from the male Goblin’s forehead and he fall back obediently.

“Huul! (Good!)” The black Goblin nodded satisfyingly and patted the male Goblin’s left shoulder once before he turned his attention to me.

Just around this time, the duration of the Beast Form Transfiguration was over and the transformation was cancelled. The card that was the core of the transformation exited my body from the cleavage and fell to the ground. At the same time, I turned back into an elf and my body lose all of its strength.

I desperately prevented myself from falling to the ground. Who knows what would happen if I fall at times like this. If I couldn’t even stand after he had already declared his defeat, he will probably look down on me and I will never get a chance like this again. I will have to stand strong until this is all over!

[Vol 2] Chapter 17: The Black Goblin

Sylvia The black Goblin didn’t wait for me to get ready and lunged towards me at full speed!

“Eh?!?! That’s unfair!!” Though I say that, I knew there’s no such thing as fairness in a fight with your life on the line.

No matter what kind of methods you use to fight, there will always be only two results in the end, either you win or you lose. The winner will be deemed as justice, while the loser will be deemed as evil.

[Vol 2] Chapter 16: Bond of Equal

Sylvia “I am sorry, Mister Goblin. I’m afraid I can’t leave so easily like that. I do have some business with you after all. I’m here to make you submit to me!” I declared that proudly while I puff up my chest.

Though I said that…… but how should I make him submit to me? According to what Sylvidia had told me before we jumped, there are three ways to turn a monsters into a familiar.

First method is through summoning ritual, similar to how I was summoned by Sheena. That’s the most common ritual for Mage and Summoner. However, there’s no guarantee you would be able to summon the familiar you wanted. Summoning ritual is like a gachapon ⌈1⌋, it’s all random. Continue reading [Vol 2] Chapter 16: Bond of Equal

Authors Note: Okay it’s the end of the combined chapters so enjoy!

Chapter 7 – The Pillars Warriors (1)

A serious look overcame Chu Shens face. He looked at the space in front of him. The leftmost pillar lit up with white light before a shadow appeared before him.

The shadow had a short sword in one hand and a dagger in the other. With such short range weapons it was obvious that this shadow specialized in speed.

Without giving the shadow time to react Chu Shen swung the huge hammer down like lightning. The shadow looked at the hammer and Chu Shen could have sworn he saw a smirk on its face.

The shadow didn’t block the hammer or jump away, it merely stepped slightly to the side. Seeing this Chu Shen smiled.

The hammer hit the ground, creating a dent in the ground. The shockwave from the powerful hit made the shadow pause.

Chu Shen used the hammers recoil to swing the hammer in a circle sideways. Without giving the shadow any room to counterattack the hammer smashed into it, blunt side first.

The shadow flew sideways when it was hit, flying outside of the circle of pillars. As the shadow flew out of the circle it merged with the gloominess of the surrounding air. The pillar stopped glowing.

“Impressive, I didn’t think you actually had some skills in using the hammer” Ti Wu exclaimed.

Chu Shen grinned at his master. As far as he knew, Ti Wu was very stingy on praise. His next sentence verified this.

“You are actually able to use the momentum of the recoil to increase your strength. Good, good. It’s too bad you’re not able to control it very well. You also need to work on your speed.”

Actually, it was only natural that Chu Shen was skilled with a hammer. Since Chu Shen knew that his only hope for power was through blacksmithing he had only practiced techniques that could help him during forging.

The first martial art he had learned, quite recently too, was called . This technique let you control all aspects of your weapon. It resulted in Chu Shen being able to control the rebound of the hammer.

This was extremely helpful during forging because of the precision needed but it had one requirement that stopped most people from practicing it.

Tremendous wrist strength.

Chu Shen did not have the greatest mastery over this technique, as he was just recently able to practice it and that was only with his inborn strength that Chu Shen was able to do so.

“You’ve passed the first pillar. In order to be considered an outer disciple you must beat 3 pillar shadows. If you pass 6 pillar shadows you will be an inner disciple. If you pass all 9 pillars you would be a core disciple.”

“What are the differences master?” Chu Shen asked. He had an idea because of his own sect but wasn’t completely sure.

“Do you think all the pillars will be this easy? Dream on! Naturally there are benefits but I will only tell you if you earn them. Now hurry up, I grow anxious.”

Steadying his mind Chu Shen nodded to Ti Wu. Recognizing that his disciple was ready to start, another pillar light up to the right of the previous one.

This time the shadow warrior carried a spear. As soon as Chu Shen saw the spear he started thinking. Spears, the blade was a long range but the shaft was a short range weapon. It was the natural enemy of a mid range weapon like Chu Shens hammer.

Shadow was cautious, keeping back from Chu Shen. It constantly made little thrusts with the spear though Chu Shen avoided all these with ease.

Finally the shadow committed to a full blow and thrust towards Chu Shen’s chest. Barely avoiding the deadly blow, Chu Shen thrust forward with the hammer, almost like he was trying to punch the shadow.

The hammer was barely avoided by the shadow however it did not expect a dart to suddenly embed itself in its head.

The whole point of Chu Shens thrust was not to kill it but to put it off balance. Then when it was off-guard to kill it with an arrow to the face. When the arrow hit the shadow it disappeared just like the other one.

Ting

A melodious bell like ring sounded out as the metal arrow landed on the ground.

[Arc 1] Chapter 5 & 6

Chapter 5 – Trials (2)

In a desolate land of fire, everything was peaceful. Then all of a sudden a hand came out of the lava. Chu Shen stood on the bottom of the lava lake, looking around in astonishment.

‘Why did I not die?’ He wondered. ‘The lava wasn’t hot and it wasn’t deep either. Just what is going on.’

“Haha, I knew you were the right choice brat. “ Ti Wu appeared above him, floating like the spirit he was.

“Teacher, what’s going on? The lava didn’t kill me.” Chu Shen said with obvious curiosity.

“A test my dear boy, a test which you passed. A cultivator of the way of the void must have courage and confidence in oneself. If you hadn’t jumped within the time for an incense stick to burn you would have landed in real lava.”

Chu Shen gaped at Master Wu. So this whole thing was a test of his confidence that would have killed him if he didn’t try it fast enough. Pondering over the matter Chu Shen nodded his head.

A true test would have a consequence for failure, often on the path of cultivation a mistake meant death. This was both a test and a lesson. Do not expect anything to be easy.

Ti Wu looked at the thinking body of Chu Shen in exasperation. “If you’re just going to sit there you’re going burn to death. You still have to get the staff and the lava will become real soon.”

Chu Shen panicked, rushing towards staff. As he ran the lava clung to him like mud slowing him down. It seemed like forever and with each step the lava grew hotter. Finally he reached the island with the staff. Grinning as he saw victory in his grasp he grabbed the staff. Searing heat scorched the skin of his palm.

“ARGHHHH” Chu Shen quickly let go of the staff, waving his and around to cool it off.

“HAHAHAHAHAHA.” The grand elder of the Void Sect, respected since the ancient times, laughed at his disciple’s misery.

Nursing his hand, Chu Shen glared at him. Yes, he was his master but he didn’t give Chu Shen face at all. “I know this is the test master but at least warn me.”

Ti Wu stopped laughing for a moment and looked at him. “What, did you expect it to be easy?” Upon seeing Chu Shens face, full of fury and indignation he burst out laughing again. “HAHAHAH, it’s a puzzle, HAHAHA, find out the answer. HAHAHA.”

Realizing he couldn’t take out his anger on his floating master, Chu Shen promptly ignored him. Studying the staff he stared at it intensely but nothing was abnormal with the staff. It seemed to be just a normal bamboo staff.
‘Maybe its like the gauntlets?’ With that thought in mind he repeated what he had done with the gauntlets. Nothing happened however.

Chu Shen thought back to the voice he had first heard. “To practice martial arts is to transcend the natural order. It is to unflinchingly march forward and to harness the power of nature. Find your path to cultivation.”

‘Hmmm. The first part is simply a description of cultivation. The second part was the key to the first test. To “unflinchingly march forward” must be the jumping into the lava. Was the clue “Harness the power of nature”?’

Chu Shen shrugged.

There was only one way to find out….. but how could he harness the power of nature? His eyes wandered around looking for something of nature. The only stuff around though was a flat black surface and lava.

His face lit up. Grasping the desperate thought with both hands he rushed to the edge of the island and reached his hands into the lava. It had felt like mud earlier and just like mud it came up in a clump.

Cautiously he carried over the lava to the staff and smeared it on the handle. Carefully placing his hands on the staff he waited for a couple seconds.

Nothing happened. Overjoyed he firmly grasped the staff and yanked on it. The staff moved a little bit but no more.
Remembering his teachers reminder that the lava would become real soon made Chu Shen reckless.

He started frantically pulling and twisting and wiggling the staff before it finally came out. Chu Shen became impressed as he looked at the staff again.

At the end stuck in the ground there was unexpectedly a metal spike and on the spike was dozens of miniature hooks.

‘Ah, no wonder teacher kept laughing the more I pulled’

The ancient voice rumbled out once again after he had picked up the staff. “You have passed the test of courage, confidence, quick wit, usage of the elements, and finally determination. There is one more test, have faith practitioner.”

As soon as the voice finished speaking the world became black before lighting up once more.

Chapter 6 – Trials (3)

Blinking to clear his eyes Chu Shen looked around. He sighed. ‘Yet another cavern’ he thought dully.
This time he was in a cave and surrounding him was columns of jade.

‘When will this end?’ He thought. His master appeared in front of him.

“Okay brat, you are now in the last stage of the test. While the other tests was for me to test your character this last one is crucial for your future path.”

Ti Wu gestured behind him. “See these columns?” Chu Shen nodded. “Good. Inside these columns are formation arrays. When I activate it a phantom warrior made of heavens Qi will form.”

“Your goal is to fight these warriors. Each column’s warrior will become stronger when you beat the previous one. There is a set of weapons over there, choose one or tell me if you want a different one.”

Upon hearing those words Chu Shen looked over at the weapons. There was various swords, spears, armor, shields, bows, and various other bladed weapons.

Chu Shen shook his head at all these weapons. While he had not fought often with the other disciples when he did he tried to use his brute strength as often as possible. “Master, I am not suitably trained in any of these weapons.”

Ti Wu was stunned. “Lowly sects. You’d think they’d at least train you how to fight but nooo. I bet he can’t even swing a sword around.” Ti Wu grumbled underneath his breath.

Raising his voice he called out to Chu Shen, “Disciple, do you have any weapon you wish to use then?”

Chu Shen cupped his hands and bowed to his master. “Yes master, I wish to use a hammer and a sleeve crossbow.”

Ti Wu frowned. He had never used a hammer or a crossbow before so he naturally did not have the capability of reproducing them.

”I cannot make them so you will have to make the weapons you wish to have. They will be weapons of pure steel just like these with no inscriptions added.”

“How do I accomplish this master?”

“Merely imagine the weapon you wish to have and let me know when you have vividly captured the image. This is after all still an illusionary soul realm in the Voids Hand.”

“Yes master.” Chu Shen closed his eyes and thought of a hammer. It was to be one and a half meters long, making it a medium range weapon.

It was all metal with the hammer part being over 3/10 of a meter at the end. One end was shaped like a brick and was obviously meant for crushing, the other was a metal spike meant for stabbing into the opponent.

The crossbow on the other hand had a wooden base. It was mounted on a metal strip with leather straps to attach it to his arm.

The string though was made with tensile steel, making it extremely hard to notch letting the arrows reach tremendous speeds. There was a groove guiding the arrow to its target. Beside the string there was a curious device.

It looked like a gear with a handle attached to it that faced inwards towards the persons chest if the crossbow was worn on the left arm. Another curious thing was the arrows. They looked more like a miniature spear, they had no feathers to speak of.

If Chu Shen was able to craft a crossbow like this it would become a true marvel in the sect. It was unfortunate that though he had the talent to accomplish this he was not experienced enough in crafting to make a crossbow like this.
Trying his best to concentrate on these masterpieces Chu Shen called out to his master hesitatingly as his brow furrowed in concentration. “Master… I have succeeded.”

Ti Wu looked at his disciple in disdain. In mere moments he had come up with the style of weapons that would most likely follow him throughout his life.

“Remember that these weapons will be crucial in what I teach you, do not be hasty with their design.” Ti Wu said sternly.

“Master….I am….really….done.” Ti Wu sighed in exasperation at his disciples helplessness.

Ti Wu floated over towards Chu Shen until he was right in front of him. Reaching out with his hand Ti Wu touched the young boys forehead. When he did a glowing blue orb emerged from his head.

Ti Wu then took the orb and put it inside his own forehead and closed his eyes. After a short moment he looked at the Chu Shen in astonishment.

“He truly does have potential to be a great artificer, no wonder he was working at that place.” Ti Wu murmured to himself. Realizing Chu Shen was still concentrating hard he frowned.

Raising his voice he called out to him. “Boy, I have already received your souls image. You may stop.”

Chu Shen opened his eyes in relief. “Here are your weapons” With a wave of his hand the weapons Chu Shen had asked for appeared, completely as he had imagined.

He looked at them in awe, knowing that it would be some time before he could create anything of this perfection.
Before Chu Shen put on the weapons though he put on armor. First he put on a chest plate. After that he put on a helmet that only covered the top of his head and neck. And finally shin guards and greaves that covered a broad portion of the arms and legs though the left arm had nothing put on it.

Carefully Chu Shen strapped the crossbow on his left arm, lacing up the straps tightly.

Ti Wu looked at the crossbow with undisguised curiosity. “What does that gear do, as far as I know it has no purpose.”

“Yes master. I don’t believe I can properly explain, could I demonstrate it for you instead?”

Ti Wu waved his hand in dismissal. “Yes, yes. Just show me what it does.”

Chu Shen bowed “As you wish master.”

Using his right arm he strained at the gears handle. As he turned it in a half circle the metal string that had been
notched in the teeth of the gear was pulled back as well.

Within a matter of a half a second the metal string that someone a whole stage above him would struggle with was notched in the crossbow.

Ti Wu gained enlightenment as to the purpose of the gear. It was to allow someone weaker to notch the crossbow. With this method you could prepare a devastating attack way above your own strength, truly formidable.

Next Chu Shen strapped on the small quiver of metal arrow-spears, as he thought of them, around his leg like a belt. Chu Shen notched the arrow into the crossbow before picking up the hammer with both hands.

“Are you equipped with your weapons then disciple?”

“Yes master.”

“Then let your final test begin!”

[Arc 1] Chapter 3 & 4

Chapter 3 – Master

Chu Shen was stunned. An expert wanted him to be his apprentice, at least he supposed the voice that sounded like an old mans that was coming from the gauntlets was a great expert. After all, he had managed to become a soul in the gauntlets and survive. Shen had never hear of someone doing that before even in the sect.

Hurriedly he kowtowed three times on the floor. “Yes master, this disciple hears you.”

“Humph humph. If not for your void constitution I would not even be able to teach you. Now where am I, a forge? WHAT! You would dare to melt down the voids hand like some cheap tool!”

Chu Shen, upon hearing the old man, as he now thought of the voice, anxiously kowtowed again saying, “I am sorry master, I am truly sorry. I had eyes but did not recognize Mount Tai.”

“Take me away at once. No better yet, put on the gauntlets.” Hearing the stern voice and wanting to please his newfound master Chu Shen quickly put on the gauntlets.

“Now I am going to test you, consider this punishment for trying to kill me, though I doubt you could even melt the leather.”

“Wait master, what do you me-“

Inside the Chu sects best forge a young man, renowned for crafting mid-tier Dragon weapons at the tender age of twelve, collapsed on the table next to him. As bits of metal and weapons clattered on the floor, the rusty gauntlets he

had on melted inside his skin.

Chu Shen woke up inside a cave. “What is this place?” Chu Shen asked in wonder as he looked around the cavern. Pieces of jade, black iron, dragons teeth stone, and other various crafting goods were strewn about like trash.

“This is your soul kid.” Chu Shen jumped as an ancient voice called out next to him. Turning his head he saw a middle aged man decked out in warriors clothes next to him. Chu Shen was curious as to why the voice sounded so old but that was not important now.

“My soul? How is that possible and why does it look like this.?” The man rolled his eyes.

“I am not going to say it twice to a brat the can’t hear. As to how it’s possible, it’s of course through the voids hand. It’s not called divine armor for nothing. It looks like this because the things you wish for is better items to forge with.”

“Now listen up kid. I wont repeat myself. I am from an ancient sect that was extremely powerful. We converted our Qi into Null Qi, this Qi can neutralize all other types of Qi, making it extremely useful in a fight.”

“Your void constitution would have been extremely valuable to the sect simply because your body naturally cultivates Null Qi. Not only that, you will be able to strengthen your body to the extreme as well, reaching strengths so that with your bare hands you can destroy entire mountains with a single blow. “

“The reason you are in your soul is just the first step. Next you will be transported to the testing realm contained within the voids hand for the sects test. I will not tell you more until you get there.”

“Master I don’t think….”

“No! You will take this test. I have told you I would take you as a disciple but there is a catch. In order for you to be considered my true disciple you must pass.”

“If you try and fail then you will simply learn basic techniques but if you pass or succeed above my expectations then I will grant you profound techniques that if cultivated properly can shake the heavens to its core. Let us begin”

“Wait master.”

“What now brat, I can’t dawdle time with idle questions otherwise my Qi will run out.”

Chu Shen cupped his hands in apology. “I am truly sorry master, I merely wanted to ask master his name.”

The middle aged man finally smiled, breaking his stern expression which he had kept the entire lecture. “Ah yes, I truly did overlook something didn’t I? Very well. My name is Ti Wu, elder of the Void sect. Try hard disciple, I truly hope you succeed.”

Suddenly Chu Shen was standing in the middle of a small island about 10 meters across either way. Surrounding him was a lake of lava and at the other end was a staff stuck in another island.

Gulp

Chu Shen looked nervously at the surrounding lava. “I didn’t think master Wu was this crazy” he whispered.

Chapter 4 – Trials (1)

Chu Shen looked at the lava helplessly. Even now he could feel the heat, his face was even starting crack, which startled him.

It must be known that as the apprentice for a blacksmith he had long since gotten used to intense heat. He had never experienced his skin cracking even when his master had forged with the divine fire. This heat must be on a different level than what he had been used to during forging.

An ancient rumbling voice boomed out all around Chu Shen, completely unlike Ti Wu. “To practice martial arts is to transcend the natural order. It is to unflinchingly march forward and to harness the power of nature. Find your path to cultivation.”

Chu Shen flinched when he heard the voice but upon hearing the words it spoke his heart grew firm and his eyes cold.

“I have been a genius who knew I could never reach the top, that no matter what I did it would be pointless. This is my chance to reach the peak and no matter what lies in my path I shall overcome it.”

As Chu Shen said this he strode forward towards the lava. As he neared the edge he condensed his Qi towards his legs, helping reinforce them. He paused at the edge of the lava, his eyes searching endlessly for a hint in this desolate land of fire.

He sighed in regret. There was nothing out there. No ropes, no hints, nothing that could help him with this challenge. Finally he accepted what he must do. He must unflinchingly stride forwards on his path. Chu Shen knew his path was

to be unique and he must embrace without hesitation or nervousness.

It was one thing to know what you must do and another to actually do it. Breathing deeply he once more tried to pierce the gloomy land. Taking a couple steps back he ran towards the edge of the lava pool. With a tremendous leap he sailed into the sky towards the pole.

Unfortunately no matter how strong your courage was, it still is not enough in the face of nature. As Chu Shen reached the peak of his leap he knew he would fall short, not by much, but enough.

Without closing his eyes he prepared for his legs to be burnt and possibly his entire body to directly turn to ash. He got closer and closer to the lava, heat radiating off it becoming unbearable.

Then his legs touched the lava. With a splash he landed in the lava, not even two meters from his goal. Ah, such a waste.

[Arc 1] Chapter 1 & 2

Authors Note: I am a new author and this is my first story so be kind okay? When I first started writing I didn’t realize how short the chapters were so the first 6 chapters will be combined for a total of 3 chapters.

Arc 1: Hopeful Beginnings

Chapter 1
Memories

Dang! Dang! Dang!

Sparks flew as a hammer repeatedly smashed into a glowing metal lump. Continuous blows struck down on the metal, not letting up for a moment. The ferocity, speed, and accuracy of the hammers blows showed the skill of the blacksmith.

Chu Shen absentmindedly wiped the sweat from his brow as he put the metal down into the water. Steam billowed up before the metal was onto a table by the forge. The metal was now recognizable as a throwing disk used by the nearby Lin sect to train them in the arts of ranged weapons.

Taking the disk along with the others he had already forged Chu Shen took them to the shops inscription master who would reinforce the disk with Qi.

“Chu Shen, you have the throwing disks ready?”

“Yes Master Lang, I have prepared them.”

“How is you’re cultivation coming along, I heard you reached level 8 of the man stage yesterday?”

Without replying Chu Shen set down the disks and quickly left for cup by the well in the corner. Master Lang watched him leave with a pained expression.
As he filled the cup with cool well water he reminisced about his past.

Cultivation was separated into different stages with each stage having 10 levels. There was Man, Tiger, Dragon, Student, Practitioner, Scholar, Warrior, Army, King, Emperor, Earth, Nature, World, Cosmos, Celestial, and Heaven stages. Each stage had a difference in the quality of the Qi until the Student stage.

Upon reaching the student stage you would have to unblock the meridians until the Earth stage upon which the meridians would be used to explore the natural laws of the universe.

All this simply compounded young twelve year old Chu Shens problems. As a kid he had enormous potential, almost to the point of disbelief. When anyone heard that he had almost reached the Tiger stage at 12 they would gasp in awe but then sigh in regret.

With his talent it would have been natural to reach the Nature or even World stage. He could never reach past the dragon stage though, simply because he had no meridians to unblock. It also did not help that his Qi was abnormal and couldn’t be used for martial arts but only for internal and bodily cultivation.

As a young kid he was treated with mixed feelings, everyone knew that one of the most prominent elders son of the Chu branch sect was a genius who had his future cut short.

Knowing he could never have the power he desired at six he threw himself into finding a suitable occupation where he could reach the pinnacle.

Upon looking Chu Shen found himself entranced with blacksmithing, where all of the weapons including the ones the elders used was forged. He knew he could be of some use by making great weapons for the sect so Chu Shen was granted the chance by Master Lang.

Chu Shen always had the heavens gift of abnormal strength, he could as a six year old pick up 80 pounds, which he used to forge. Upon finding his talent for forging Master Lang took him as his direct disciple.

Chapter 2
The Pair of Gauntlets

“Junior brother Shen, I have some scrap metal for you.”

“Okay Senior brother Lan, just leave it on the table.” Chu Lan was a disciple of the Chu Sect who often visited the shop. He would bring with him old or useless armor and weapons to be melted down into new items.

On the table was a rusted pair of gauntlets, a sword broke in two, a helm with a dent in it, and a metal dagger in perfect condition. “Was there anything interesting in this batch Senior Lan?”

“No, all this is from that old man that managed the shop down the road. He ran out of all his goods except these so he decided to leave to someplace, no one knows where.”

“I have to go prepare for the sects trials, you should too if you want to become an inner disciple.”

“…”

“Oh come on, you cannot keep being depressed like this. A frog in a well does not know the extent of the earth. There may be a treasure that can give you meridians, but unless you are a core disciple the sect wouldn’t give it to you.”

“I thank you for your advice Senior Lan, but I must forge now. Please forgive my rudeness. “ Chu Shen said abruptly as he bowed to him. As he spoke Chu Lan frowned.

“Either way consider my words carefully. Goodbye, junior brother Shen.”

Chu Shen let out a sigh of relief when he left. Grabbing ahold of the sword that was broke he started melting it down, hitting it with his hammer to drive out the impurities that had accumulated on the outside of the blade.

He continuously melted down and forged the sword into ore. Right now Chu Shen had no time to forge weapons so instead he turned the broken items into pure metal ore.

Chu Shen worked his way down the line until he had refined all but the pair of gauntlets. As he reached down to grab it Chu Shen felt his Qi resonate with the pair of gauntlets. Curious he studied the pair of gauntlets but no matter how he looked at it, it was just a rusted pair of gauntlets.

Setting the pair of gauntlets down he stared at it cautiously before a light appeared in his eyes. “Ah yes. Some artifacts you have to supply Qi to them before they work or drip blood on it.”

Doing as he had said gray colored Qi appeared in his hands about the size of a penny. Until he unblocked his meridians this was the most Qi he could use outside his body. The penny sized Qi surged towards the pair of gauntlets in a formless wave.

When it came in contact with the pair of gauntlets it sucked up the Qi and a white circle lit up on the top part of the pair of gauntlets.

“Ah finally, someone with null Qi has gotten ahold of me.” A voice said inside his head. Chu Shen looked at the gauntlets in astonishment.

“You actually have a void constitution brat?” The voice said in astonishment. “I didn’t think such a small sect would have someone like you. Consider yourself lucky then, I have decided to take you as a disciple.”

Chu Shen leaned back on the wall in astonishment. Who would have thought the gauntlets would have a soul trapped inside it and it could absorb his Qi.

Nothing else had ever been able to absorb his Qi, as a matter of fact he destroyed any other type of Qi his came in contact with, frustrating his teachers efforts in teaching Chu Shen about laying formations.

“What brat, don’t want to become a disciple of the great me? Would you rather never be able to pass the King stage? I guarantee that without my instruction you could never pass this stage.”

Soft Spoken Brutality Chapter 15

Soft Spoken Brutality: Somehow, someway, I’ll try to make you stay.

When Kaneki awoke, he did so in a way he was used to. Painfully. The youth expected his daze to end in another episode of suffering, one he supposed he deserved if he thought about it carefully.

“I see you’re awake.” a calm voice broke through his trail of thoughts. It held the quality of spring after a cold bitter season of death.

He supposed the next question would come from the man who sat across the table, calmly looking at Kaneki with an expression void of any emotion. The pause allowed Kaneki to study the man in detail, white hair, a silver briefcase, glasses that spoke of clean cut professionalism. Everything about this man screamed formality to the youth, he wondered what he was doing in his apartment.

The calm that seemed to permeate the entire room due to the man led Kaneki astray, he didn’t even realise that his legs were not able to move and that he had something liquid permeating the shirt he was currently wearing. The burning in his eye also led to a slow realisation of the current situation.

Didn’t the manager speak of investigators carrying briefcases?

He supposed the proverbial cat was out of the bag then.

Well, it didn’t take the world too long after all.

Rize knew that something was amiss, Kaneki was gone for days after she had last seen him, it was always like this with that frustrating and condescending… She stopped that line of thought before she got irritated again, it wouldn’t be good to start devising painful ways to make him pay for her inconvenience when she was somewhat in charge of his welfare.

This entire situation started with her usual relaxing morning, drinking a cup of coffee at Anteiku, her temporary base of operations following the situation with the manager. Her routine of coming to the cafe and relaxing before continuing on with her lifetime of enjoyment and relaxation at the expense of others didn’t change. She needed to vent her frustration with Kaneki, in a non destructive manner, otherwise she would be quite out of it.

A slew of admirers that never stopped coming even after her hunting days, the managers watchful eye prevented her making a snack of any of them. Now that she paused to examine her routine without the excess of the hunt and binge eating, she realised that her thirst for blood had died down.

It wasn’t gone, somethings would still make her blood boil like nothing else, however he desire to devour all that she could seemed to have calmed due to the regulation she faced.

“Nothing to pacify you like the fear of death huh.” She huffed, in a manner that resembled annoyance. Yet, she wasn’t really annoyed. Even those peace lovers that she was supposed to hate for disrupting here natural routine. They were quite accommodating, despite it all.

“Rize-san, the wall may be quite interesting, however I’d like to inquire as to where Kaneki-kun is.” a voice broke the stupor she was currently in.

“Manager-san” she replied lazily, not really intending to humour his attempt at linking the new ghoul to her.

“He is an adult and can do as he pleases. What he does in his own time is none of my concern.” she replied airily whilst demonstratively staring at her fingernails. She always wondered when the well of the managers patience would run dry. She supposed it could be a side project, after all, it is a harmless experiment.

“Of course he can, I would never imply otherwise,” he smiled, continuing “however, Kaneki-kun, whilst not being your responsibility, is the one who trusts you above all else.”

She had never considered it that way before. She had admirers, she had authority figures, however, she was severely lacking in those who understood her plight and stayed with her beyond the superficial reasons as listed above. Perhaps the manager was right to a degree, not that she would ever admit any of this to someone. Fending for herself did have a certain enjoyable pace to it.

“Also, as the one who introduced the young man to the life of a ghoul, a life that you of all people should know has its own set of extreme difficulties” he paused solemnly. “Perhaps your sense of camaraderie can be kindled due to both of you having struggles of the sort that one can’t deal with on their own.”

“Manager, I understand already, I’ll check up on him.” she said haughtily, perhaps too much so, judging by the gentle and knowing smile on the managers wrinkled face.

“I knew we would see eye to eye on this matter.” he stated with finality, inclining his head a small angle downwards and walking away with the same confidence that he usually carries on his home court.

“I suppose I could get this annoying matter out of the way quickly,” she huffed, standing up and briskly leaving the quiet afternoon cafe.

Arriving at the apartment did not take anytime at all, a normal pace led to her arriving only fifteen minutes after he departure from Anteiku, however the calm walk there had no prepared her for smelling someone she hoped she would never have to see.

The door was damaged, yet it was locked, the starving ghoul that was trapped inside would never have taken the care to close and lock the door nearly ripping it off the hinges.

Perhaps it was not too late to turn back and hope she escaped with her life, that man’s goodwill had limits after all…

“Rize-san, how nice of you to join us. Please come in, we have much to discuss.”

Now that it was too late to run, well hopefully she could at least die with some dignity she pondered. Walking toward the door and turning the handle.

“Kishou Arima. It has been a while.”

Soft Spoken Brutality Chapter 14

Kaneki only recovered from the blood loss inflicted through his own stupidity much later. 2 days later to be specific. Yet even while he slept, the door was knocked on meticulously for fifteen to twenty minutes. This punctual stranger refused to give up on his goal and on the third day, the day on which Kaneki awakened. The knock came once more.

It would not be wise to open it of course, he realised. With the corpse being hidden and the blood the decorated his bedroom.

Kaneki had no idea of the pattern that the stranger had maintained in his visits. Hence, the suspense he had lasted for much longer than necessary. In that time, he inspected the wound that should have adorned his head. The only remains of that psychotic episode were the bloodstained walls and shelf. The majority of which were adorned with the crimson substance, the decorative vase that he had bought in his youth went from white and blue to a more grisly brown.

Oxygenated blood had a unique colour after all, initially it is vibrant and eventually it is disgusting. Just how death creates shock and then dies down to a constant reminder to all those who are involved in anyway.

The hunger he felt however was much more real, it gave the world new colours. The tingling sensation in his chest from fear. The hungering beast that lived within him, it desired a feast. Perhaps since no one had found out about the first time he had acted like a famished animal, no one would find out this time.

His reasoning, which was only partaken in his head, grew stronger by the second, yet it wasn’t Kaneki who was making the decision, instead this decision was seen from a perspective that was so foreign and uninvolved that it seemed almost unrealistic.

Just like how he saw the splinters in the door, the dust and nails adorning the floorboards and the filament in the ceiling lights. The detail, with how the nails were bent, the filament was curved, the splinters being like islands upon the smooth wood. All of this he noticed, yet the feeling of hunger and fear grew fainter in comparison. This was lost upon him.

The beating of his heart grew fainter and fainter. The searing sensation in his eye almost completely disappeared. The thrumming of an underwater world was the replacement to the quiet apartment atmosphere, this was vastly different to the darkness of his sleep or even his calmer moments when awake.

Suddenly the thrumming was interrupted by a sharp pain in his lower back. The hunger returned, as his consciousness was hit by the full force of the desire to feed. The moment of calm he experienced seemed to have completely disappeared. The overall level of sensory input decreased, however the specificity of what he could see, hear and smell only grew.

The investigator genius was about to leave for the third time when he heard activity. The laboured breathing, the soft knock on the floor and the sudden absolute silence.

His hand was on the on his quinque as soon as the door flew open, the impact of which left it shaking on its hinges twice this week.

Before he could be dismembered by the incoming onslaught of crimson appendages, he ducked the incoming assault. It was easy to see the agitation and desperation of this famished ghoul. The assault was meant to kill, not maim. Yet, that made it much more predictable and easy to stop. A dash forward and a slice to the stomach, the pain should have some stopping power, whilst killing the ghoul instantly was always an option. That would defeat the purpose of a fact finding mission.

Furthermore, it would be irritating to kill something instantly when the time dedicated to learning something about it was this long. Instead the disabling blow would have to do for now. At the very least, that was the plan. The following cut to the arm by Arima was meant to completely tear the appendage off, if not keep it barely attached. What happened completely threw the calm investigator off, as the first cut was not even a quarter as deep as he intended, whilst the second was a merely a scratch on the forearm.

The surprise he felt hopefully was kept to a minimum, after all, a ghoul with such killer instincts could not have stayed under the radar for this long. Especially his radar. This could be the lucky break that Arima had been hoping for in his search across the wards. However, for this to count as anything, the ghoul had to be disabled and alive. The investigator swiftly overturned the quinque whilst dodging the second onslaught of the now horizontally aimed kagune, instead he did what the ghoul did not expect, the hand of the ghoul lay on the floor meters from the borrowed quinque that Arima was using.

The ghoul started clutching his arm, in this moment the next strike pierced the calfs of the panicked youth. Making him lean back and fall from the pain and a lack of balance. The ferocity of the initial assault was gone by the natural reflex of fear when faced with a more powerful and imposing foe.

The grab of the collar and the sharp pull led Kaneki to be dragged back into the apartment, Arima then immediately closed the door.

He inspected the damage, the ghoul would live. That however, was only the easy part.

Soft Spoken Brutality Chapter 13

Kaneki being her responsibility was something she expected, given that she was the only one who knew of his unique situation thus far. The manager only knew the bare details, and she would guess that the old ghoul was too smart to share this information with anyone.

Kaneki Ken beating his head against the wall into a bloody pulp was never what she expected to come from this situation. Stabbing him again was always an option. Yet, Rize always saw herself as being one above the violence, with the violent demeanour only serving to punctuate her point. However, with Kaneki being violent and unreasonable, her words don’t seem to mean much to the young man.

“Kaneki. You may hate ghouls, but you are a ghoul, instead of hurting yourself and denying your own existence. Try to simply live.” She attempted to implore. However, she always did forget that not everyone lived and let live like her.

His banging didn’t stop. Perhaps it only worsened, morality and the realisation that he had committed murder seemed to weigh upon him endlessly. It was an unspoken agreement that both of them honoured. The murder was not to be mentioned. The corpse was still in the bathroom. The blood was still on his shirt. The entrails were simply drier and smelled much more pungent.

Time was supposed to wipe away the sin, instead it only seemed to reinforce the existence of the sin.

“Rize-san, if I can’t die, I can’t refuse to participate in death either? Do you not see the cruelty?” this was almost a plea. To die so he would not have to be part of death.

A slap echoed across the room.

“Get over yourself.” An angered look on his bloodied face was all she could register. Yet the indignant tone seemed to shock the youth into submission.

“You feel sorry for yourself and want to die. Why didn’t you, Jason gave you a way out.” she paused. Hoping her message would sink in.

“How could I simply resign when I had something to live for?” he shot back, almost instantly, this time with much more fervour in his tone.

The accusation rung in the air.

“Ghouls aren’t worthy of life then.” she stated, almost rhetorically.

Then understanding dawned on the young man, however retracting his words at this point would be far too late.

“I’m sorry.” he said solemnly.

The deafening silence simply permeated the air for the time being, almost reminding the whole universe of the tension that exists in moments of emptiness. Then with a thundering whisper, it broke.

“No, no you are not.” her anger was almost permeable, yet this was not the anger that flashed across the heavens, letting all know of its presence, it was a simmering feeling disappointment.

What followed surprised the half ghoul even more than the anger itself. “Then die for all I care.” he heard much more clearly than he would have liked.

She left. The door shaking on its hinges due to the strength that it was slammed with.

The gall he had, with which he mocked her. It was infuriating. Every scrap, the hunger, the danger, the despair. She finally had a life she wanted, abundance, splendour, companionship? Instead he claims that she is not worth anything that she had fought for inch by inch to obtain.

It is exactly the poverty of the ghouls and supposed superiority of the humans that infuriated her. Being born into an assortment of safety and wonder, never having to worry about going hungry.

Yet a voice in her head, a quiet voice, compared to her anger in the very least. It keeps reminding her that he has no way of empathising or even understanding her pain. Just like she has no way to understand and empathise with his.

What she was missing whilst she walked was the orange haired stalker who was determined to find out more about his friend.

“Rize-san!” he shouted, “Wait! I need to ask you about Kaneki” however, she paid him no heed. Like any nuisance, hopefully he would leave with time. Instead he simply got louder and much more persistent.

“Rize-san! I won’t tell anyone. I promise” this time she paused, looking at him with the coolest expression  he had ever seen.

“and what do you know?” her stare showing no tolerance for this conversation before it even saw the light of day.

“But it wouldn’t be alright to speak of this here.” He pointed to the other people conspiratorially. However, his following statement surprised her by the extent of the information he wielded,.

“I saw what happened at the elevator”

All her doubts were erased, now the choice of whether or not someone or something else needed to be erased summarily dawned on her.

Yet, that thought died as quickly as it was born, the old man whom she knew the boy sought made sure of it. Even from a distance, his authority only served to make her life much more confusing and difficult, perhaps it was a necessity. After all, one cannot simply live in joy and bliss all of the time.

Arima was going over the reports of ghouls for the ward, since he temporarily stationed himself here. His responsibility being a major priority. His secondary purpose known only to himself was also a major motivation for scouring even the lesser known wards for a worthy candidate.

Thus, when the report of a missing person in one of the local apartments came in for this ward. He was surprised, wasn’t that the same building in which a victim of a local ghoul attack had lived?

“Takizawa. I’m going out to investigate” he stated calmly

“Yes! Of course! I’ll notify Houji-san.” the young subordinate stuttered out to the legend.

This order of business would need to be resolved soon, and Arima had a creeping suspicion that things were not as they seemed.
