While the guards watched in a daze as a young girl stood alongside one of the Twelve Apostles, the fight would not wait for them.
The assassin continued taking off the armor, throwing each piece of it, and Noin stepped in to block all of them with his immovable shield.
He rivalled even a Holy Lord in terms of raw defensive power, and had plenty of specialized defensive moves.
All he had to do was stand there. None of the assassin’s attacks had any effect on him, even if they landed outside the shield’s cover.
Nothing made it through, almost like there was an invisible wall there.
“Ohh, nothing can make it through Noin’s shield!”
Seeing Noin blocking all of those attacks without moving a muscle, the guard leader reaffirmed his conviction that the Twelve Apostles were in a realm of their own.
As his faith was reignited, the fight continued to evolve.
Having shed off all the weight from the armor, the assassin was also ready to fight in earnest as he held a large kukri and eyed the guards, identifying them as Mira and Noin’s biggest weak point.
“Let’s do it this way uh… Mira. I’ll go grab him, and you watch over the guards, okay?”
The easiest move for the assassin was attacking the guards, and making a run for it while Mira and Noin tried to protect them. So Noin decided to move first.
After all, he had the perfect ability for such a situation.
It was called Wedge Chain Bind, extending a tether from himself to an enemy with a chain of light, forcing them to a one-on-one duel.
It was powerful enough to restrain even the biggest of magic beasts, and the target could not get more than ten meters away from the caster.
The effect lasted until one of three conditions were met: either one of the two was defeated, the caster undid it, or a third party interfered.
In other words, once activated, the enemy would be forced into a lengthy fight to exhaustion against the Paladin with the strongest defenses.
There was no other spell more effective against a fleeing assassin.
But Mira shook her head, rejecting Noin’s idea.
“No, it’ll be way faster if I deal with him. You go cover the guards.”
She insisted she would take care of the assassin, emphasizing that it was the faster choice.
Since Noin’s abilities were all focused on defense, his offensive side was lacking. Obviously he would not lose after using Wedge Chain Bind, with the downside that it could become a very lengthy fight.
So Mira believed it was more efficient for her to rush in and restrain her much more quickly.
Their discussion stunned the guard leader further, who could not understand why they were even arguing about that. He knew that the safest option was for one of the Twelve Apostles to deal with that enemy, an unknown assassin that likely still had a wealth of tricks up his sleeve.
The assassin also took notice of that argument, seeing it as the perfect opening, throwing the kukri he held faster than one’s eyes could follow.
Instead of flying on a straight path, he used some technique to curve its path, ensuring it closed in on the guards.
That did not matter to Noin, who can protect them even from different angles like that. The spinning kukri struck a barrier, and bounced back into the assassin’s hand.
“See? Defending will be easier for you too. I’d have to constantly bring out a shield every time, and that sounds like a pain.”
There was a clear difference in Mira and Noin’s ability to protect the guards.
Noin could deploy all sorts of barriers to passively protect them from every direction.
While Mira had to constantly react to the enemy’s moves, meaning she had to keep her senses sharp, and she really did not want to deal with that.
To further her point, she asked, “Do you think you could take him down in three minutes?”
“…Okay, we’ll do it your way.”
Faced by Mira’s insistence, Noin sighed and agreed with it.
His fighting style revolved around blocking all of his enemy’s attacks, slowly cornering them until they could not move anymore. It was an effective strategy, but very time consuming, so Mira always saw it as dull and boring.
On top of that, there were bystanders there, so they could not risk them being caught up.
So once they agreed on a plan, Mira and Noin quickly moved into position.
Noin joined the guards, standing in front of them to protect them from further attacks, and whatever destruction Mira would certainly bring herself.
And Mira rushed forward, closing the distance with the assassin, who was still trying to find an escape route.
“Hoh, you dodged that.”
The assassin was far more agile than before, dodging all the partial summon attacks Mira tried to sneak in.
“You’re coming after me? Thank you, at least I’ll have a chance to escape now.”
Anyone with common sense knew the difference between a rank A adventurer, and one of the Twelve Apostles. So the assassin felt like he had a good chance of running away, and he no longer had to deal with one of those terrifying Twelve Apostles.
The only issue was that he lacked some vital information. Mira being an adventurer was just a front for her true identity.
In reality, he was about to face one of the Nine Wisemen, who stood shoulder by shoulder with the Twelve Apostles.
Oblivious to all that, the assassin grinned as he flung out multiple kukris one after another. They all took different paths, some going after Mira from the sides, and some even from above.
It was like the laws of physics had no effect over them, ensuring that Mira had no way of dodging the countless blades, and the guards gasped.
The assassin’s grin also twisted further, convinced of his own victory.
And then it happened. Four Holy Knights appeared surrounding Mira. Shortly followed by another four Dark Knights that attacked the over-confident assassin.
“I get it now…! So that’s why you just charged ahead like that!”
All of the kukris were deflected by the Holy Knight’s tower shields, sending them flying back to the assassin’s hands, while he skillfully dodged the surprise attack from the Dark Knights.
It was clear he had not expected any of that to happen, but it was not enough to stop him. He adjusted his movements, changing the trajectory of the kukris so they would slice through the Dark Knights on their way back.
