Seconds, or maybe minutes. While I stood there rooted in place, concentrating on disaster response, Oyabun was beating the crap out of me. I had a barrier up that could, in theory, completely block even a supernova explosion, so I didn’t feel so much as a pat. If I’d been looking away, I might not even have noticed I was being punched.
But after finishing the restoration of the drained Pacific and standing atop the iceberg, I was bleeding from the nose. My eyes throbbed dully, my insides burning, my mouth tasted of iron, and dizziness and nausea washed over me.
As a result of pushing my telekinesis—an ability overtrained far beyond what a human body should bear—past its limits and abusing it, my physical body finally started screaming. If this had been Haoran-kun’s aim, then it was quite impressive. I had to admit, as a way to deal damage to me, it was effective.
When I wiped my nose with the back of my hand, a thick smear of blood stuck to it—even though Shiori had wiped it for me earlier. Yikes. No wonder it hurt.
“Pain…? Right, now I remember. This is the sensation called ‘pain.’”
Since I was at it, I decided to go along with the situation and spit out a suitably badass line.
But no one heard it. Someone please hear me, or I’ll just look like a cringey idiot.
Well, with explosions, destruction, and angry shouts booming all over the battlefield, it would be stranger if anyone did catch a muttered soliloquy.
Oyabun seemed to have hit the limit of his mysterious super power-up and was slumped against a gravestone, completely spent. Shiori, leaving Oyabun to me, was heading toward the rampaging giant cat.
Shouta-kun and Touka-chan were in a raid battle against a fifty-meter-class giant cat (Huang-hu probably kept it modest because making himself any bigger would crack the iceberg), while Ig and Tai-yi were off to the edge away from the main battlefield, bristling, fangs bared, glaring each other down. The rest were scattered around the iceberg, collapsed with scorch marks and bumps.
I don’t know why, but I can’t shake the feeling that while Shiori and I were tied up dealing with the disaster, we completely missed the highlight of the Amaterasu vs. Tsukuyomi battle.
…Well, it’s fine.
It’s not fine at all, but let’s say it is. It’s over. You can’t rewind time—well, some espers can, but neither of them have been born yet, so we can’t.
Dragging this out will just make it sloppy. Everyone, myself included, is already worn out. Before we’re too exhausted to move, let’s go for the last dance. I feel like I mess up time management every time there’s an event, but that’s probably just my imagination.
“Bo~ss! Did you use the stone!? Hurry up, this thing’s strong!”
“It’s done.”
Perfect timing—Shouta-kun threw me a line, so I held up the nicely colored pebble I’d picked up from a riverbank, which only had the grand name of “artifact” slapped onto it.
Cracks spread through the artifact as it bathed in sunlight, then it crumbled into sparkling sand, blown away by the wind and vanished.
“Ugh!?”
I groaned, clutching my own body and doing my best to tremble, as if something were rampaging inside me.
I’m not exactly a great actor. Shiori had given me a barely-passing grade during rehearsal beforehand, but by sheer coincidence, the aftereffects of abusing my telekinesis—blood tears, a bleeding nose, and my pale face—worked in my favor. I genuinely felt like throwing up and was in bad shape anyway, so I mostly just had to be myself.
“Kinemitsu-san!?”
Shiori, who had been supporting Shouta-kun and Touka-chan using time stop, noticed something wrong with me and cried out. Hearing the urgency in her voice, the two of them turned their eyes on me as well.
To begin with, the World Shadow is linked to Sago Kinemitsu, the telekinetic.
Through that link, telekinetic power flows into the World Shadow, strengthening it.
And in turn, the omnipresence and immortality of the World Shadow flow back into me, making me immortal.
To eradicate the World Shadow, it’s necessary to sever this link first, and only then destroy it. Otherwise, Sago Kinemitsu would be dragged down and die as well.
That’s the setup.
“Ghh… the Shadow… I can’t hold it back…!!!!!”
Darkness seeped out from my body, sticky and writhing in agony, as if it had a will of its own.
That pitch-black darkness slipped free of me and took on a humanoid shape.
Average build. Male form. It rose unsteadily, like a three-dimensional shadow puppet.
As it was born, I, in exchange, performed the white-eyed faint I’d practiced after reading and training with “Absolutely Hilarious! Ten Banquet Party Tricks!” and collapsed flat on my back. After all, I was going to need to do some delicate manipulation from here on out, so excuse me as I concentrate while playing possum for a bit.
The Shadow surveyed the espers with a face painted over in pure black, its outline wavering.
Just by existing, it exuded an overwhelming pressure. The ability users still on their feet trembled under it.
In reality, it wasn’t some vague thing like “Intimidation,” but simply telekinesis altering air pressure, whipping up winds, dispersing scent compounds that drew out vigilance and stress, and so on. But taken together, it felt like intimidation, so that was good enough.
Everyone held their breath, wary and unmoving. The animal group sensed something amiss as well, fur standing on end.
“That’s what… separated from… Kinemitsu-san?”
Since no one was speaking, Shiori slipped in an explanatory line disguised as confusion.
Yes. The true identity of this dark human is simple and obvious.
Another me. An alter personality. Two sides of the same coin. An existence of light and shadow.
The kind you see all the time in battle manga.
Easy to understand, right?
The core of the collective known as the World Shadow, a being that had coexisted with a telekinetic for many years, siphoning off his power and separating itself.
This guy is the final boss. The World Shadow bearing Sago Kinemitsu’s power—Sago Kinekura 1.
Footnotes:
- Sago Kinemitsu’s name is spelled as such 佐護杵光
