“Leafa1, sorry for the wait. It’s time to give you milk.”
I woke up to a gentle voice. There was a faint, sweet fragrance in the air. As I gradually emerged from slumber, I realized I was being held in my mother’s arms.
“Ugaa…”
I tried to call her “Mother,” but the words that came out were entirely different. Not only was my pronunciation far from accurate, but I also realized that drool was dripping from the corner of my mouth as I tried to speak.
“You must be hungry since you had a good sleep,” My mother said as she wiped my mouth. There was no doubt that she was my biological mother, but I still wasn’t used to being taken care of by others.
“Ah-uu-ahh…”
I attempted to express my gratitude, but all that came out was an inarticulate sound. However, it seemed that my intended words somehow got through, as my mother appeared to smile vaguely within my hazy field of vision.
“Hehe, you’re welcome.”
I was amazed that it worked, and while blinking my eyes, a silver spoon was presented before me. The slightly stronger, sweet scent I detected was likely due to the milk resting on the spoon.
“Here you go.”
The spoon touched my lips, and the milk was gently poured into my mouth without the need for me to extend my tongue.
“Ngh, ngh…”
It tasted sweet and tender. As I swallowed it, my limbs moved almost on their own, driven by an instinctual desire for more.
“Is it delicious? Drink up and grow big, okay?” My mother said as she brought another spoonful of milk to my lips. I continued to drink the warm, tender milk she offered, finding it so delicious that it made me wonder if such a delicacy existed in the world.
While drinking the milk, my hunger gradually subsided. With my throat quenched and my stomach filled with milk, a sense of relief washed over me. I couldn’t help but let out a yawn, and drowsiness enveloped me like a warm, comforting blanket.
“Sleep well, Leafa,” my mother’s gentle voice echoed in my half-asleep state. The comforting touch of her warm hand stroking my head felt pleasant, and I surrendered to the impending drowsiness.
The next time I woke up, I felt my body warm and damp.
“Ua…”
I involuntarily let out a sound of discomfort as I realized my butt was wet. The surroundings were dimly lit, and it appeared to be nighttime. I had no memories of being a baby as Glass, but with my current physical limitations, using the toilet was impossible. I had to resign myself to the fact that, until I learned to walk, I had no choice but to let it happen. I let out a sigh.
“Auggh…”
Or at least attempted to sigh, to my surprise, a bizarre sound emerged from my throat. Something seemed to well up around my diaphragm area, and every time it escaped my throat, my entire body convulsed.
“Oh dear, hiccups?” my mother’s voice suggested that I was experiencing hiccups. But understanding didn’t make them stop.
“Your diaper is wet too. You must not have liked it. I’m sorry,” My mother, lifting me, said apologetically as she noticed my damp clothing. She quickly removed my clothes and dressed me in clean ones that smelled of soap.
“I’m sorry I didn’t notice, Leafa.”
No, the one who should be sorry is me. Even though I couldn’t move, making a grown-up take care of my lower half like this was…
“Your bottom must feel cold and uncomfortable, right? Dear, can you get some warm water?”
“I already boiled it, Natal,” my father responded to my mother’s call.
With my current eyesight, I couldn’t see well, but there seemed to be some kind of machinery next to my father. I could barely make out a small red light lit up on it2.
Before long, my father, holding a basin filled with warm water, came and placed it on the floor, and I was laid down on a towel next to it.
“Yes, the temperature feels good. Let’s give you a bath since we’re at it,” my mother said as she began to undress me, even though I had just changed into clean clothes. She removed the diaper, and despite being clean, she prepared a new one.
“Dear, can you do it?”
“Right… Okay, Leafa, it’s bath time,” my father said while lifting me and gently placing my legs in the warm water. To ensure I didn’t get cold, a thin cloth covered my body, and the water was frequently poured over me to keep me warm.
“How does it feel, Leafa? Is it comfortable?” My father asked as he gently soaped my head and body.
“Aauh,” I tried to convey agreement and attempted to move my limbs, still somewhat awkwardly. I noticed my father’s eyes widening at it.
“Natal, did you hear that?!”
“Hehe, I heard it.”
Both of my parents responded with smiles to my reaction. It was frustrating not to be able to speak properly, but for them, it seemed not to matter at all.
“She must be happy that Daddy is giving her a bath.”
“Oh, is that so? I’ll give her one every day from now on.”
“I’ll hold you to that, Rudra.”
It seemed that my parents, Natal and Rudra, had a good relationship. They continued to smile at each other and converse after my response. I considered trying to react in some way, but since I could only produce sounds like “ah” and “uh” despite understanding them, I decided to listen for the time being.
“I’m really glad you were born safely.”
“It’s all thanks to you, Natal.”
